Book For a Handful of Feathers

Download or read book For a Handful of Feathers written by Guy de la Valdéne and published by Open Road + Grove/Atlantic. This book was released on 2007-12-01 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An avid hunter and wildlife preservationist, the Field & Stream contributor explores these seemingly opposed passions in this “beautifully written” memoir (The Bloomsbury Review). After traveling the globe on expeditions with world-class sportsmen, Guy de la Valdéne purchased an eight hundred–acre farm outside Tallahassee and set out to raise and hunt his favorite game bird, bobwhite quail. But de la Valdéne is also a naturalist at heart, and as he planted trees and divided fields, he found that running the farm compelled him to operate as both hunter and protector. Along the way, de la Valdéne gets pulled into some eye-opening adventures: to a masterpiece of controlled burning performed by a Vietnam veteran in a helicopter with three hundred gallons of napalm, and to his own experiences building a dam to fill his pond. For a Handful of Feathers reconciles a passion for hunting with a deep sentiment for the wild. With sensitivity and patience, de la Valdéne searches for his, and our, place in the natural world. “A classic that compares well with Turgenev’s A Sportsman’s Notebook.” —The Bloomsbury Review “An American classic . . . A book as unapologetic as it is thoughtful about blood sport . . . [It] has the verbal spark and pace of a fine novel.” —Gray’s Sporting Journal “A gem that will appeal not only to hunters but to all readers who love the land.” —Publishers Weekly “Valuable for its insight into quail behavior and its thoughtful address of hunting ethics.” —Kirkus Reviews

Having grown up poor and been labeled this way, nationally acclaimed educator and author Mike Rose takes us into classrooms and communities to reveal what really lies behind the labels and test scores. With rich detail, Rose demonstrates innovative methods to initiate “problem” students into the world of language, literature, and written expression. This book challenges educators, policymakers, and parents to re-examine their assumptions about the capacities of a wide range of students. Book Hurry Please I Want to Know

Download or read book Hurry Please I Want to Know written by Paul Griner and published by Sarabande Books. This book was released on 2015-04-13 with total page 143 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An otherworldly short story collection that shines “a glaring light on the complexities of human personality and family relationships” (Kirkus Reviews). “Paul Griner is a daredevil storyteller. . . . Anyone who cares about the short story—or just loves good writing—should make a beeline for this remarkable collection.” —Tom Perotta, author of The Leftovers The stories in Hurry Please I Want to Know invite urgent curiosity as Paul Griner spins between quotidian worlds infused with the foreign and the familiar. A man brings his mother back from the dead, only to find her most irritating quirk magnified. A low-ranking soldier is forced to milk a cow within enemy range. A cartoonist’s daughter waits each morning to see how her father’s mood dictates how he will draw her face. Grieving siblings wait to inherit one of their father’s physical features after his death . . . Griner’s endings shift between the shocking and quiet. The result is a meditation on capturing the intangible, and the human fascination with realms that are not our own. Hurry Please I Want to Know gives us the sensation of falling into someone else’s world and an immediate future spent sorting out its thrilling peculiarities. “Griner approaches everyday tragedies by building elaborate machines and shaky structures in the hope of creating a facsimile of life that might somehow become real . . . A pleasure.” —The New York Times “Griner overlays tales of family, artistry, and parent-child relationships with elements of the surreal, in order to create, in the words of one character, ‘an undercurrent of mournfulness’.” —Publishers Weekly “The writing is careful, precise, shocking—stylistically brilliant.” —Bobbie Ann Mason, author of The Girl in the Blue Beret

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Learn to communicate with your dog—using their language “Good reading for dog lovers and an immensely useful manual for dog owners.”—The Washington Post An Applied Animal Behaviorist and dog trainer with more than twenty years’ experience, Dr. Patricia McConnell reveals a revolutionary new perspective on our relationship with dogs—sharing insights on how “man’s best friend” might interpret our behavior, as well as essential advice on how to interact with our four-legged friends in ways that bring out the best in them. After all, humans and dogs are two entirely different species, each shaped by its individual evolutionary heritage. Quite simply, humans are primates and dogs are canids (as are wolves, coyotes, and foxes). Since we each speak a different native tongue, a lot gets lost in the translation. This marvelous guide demonstrates how even the slightest changes in our voices and in the ways we stand can help dogs understand what we want. Inside you will discover: • How you can get your dog to come when called by acting less like a primate and more like a dog • Why the advice to “get dominance” over your dog can cause problems • Why “rough and tumble primate play” can lead to trouble—and how to play with your dog in ways that are fun and keep him out of mischief • How dogs and humans share personality types—and why most dogs want to live with benevolent leaders rather than “alpha wanna-bes!” Fascinating, insightful, and compelling, The Other End of the Leash is a book that strives to help you connect with your dog in a completely new way—so as to enrich that most rewarding of relationships.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The idea for writing this book came about when I wondered where the subject matter would come from to do my third book. I wanted to write a book that I felt strong compassion for, and I remembered when I was a senior getting a bachelor of science degree in secondary education with a major in history and minor in English at Southern Illinois University at Edwards in 1974, which became my teaching areas to teach on the high school level in the state of Missouri, and part of the graduation from the history department required its students to write a historical paper on any topic they were interested in. With the encouragement of my professor Dr. Herbert Rosenthal, he said I should write it on Stokely Carmichael, leader of the civil rights organization called SNCC, which meant nonviolent student coordinating committee, who made the term black power popular because Stokely wanted black people to control their own destiny and build an economic base of power for themselves.
