Book excerpt: “Chevonne invites you to walk with her through part of her life-journey, with all its wretchedness and heartaches and all its thrills (the saving power of the Holy Spirit)! Praise the Lord!” ~ Fr Marshall F., former parish priest of Church of the Immaculate Conception ________________________________________________________ The Wise Preacher (King Solomon) says in Ecclesiastes 1: 9 that there is nothing new under the sun. That which has been, is what will be, that which is done is what will be done; yet all of us go through the vagaries of life and it can trouble us, place us in a position of despair and hopelessness, a hell on earth. However, Chevonne McGregor’s life experience in this book can offer us hope as she has finally found her ‘Heaven on Earth’ and it begins with a relationship with this wonderful God who revealed Himself to us through his son Jesus Christ. 1 Corinthians 2:9-10 9 That is what the Scriptures mean when they say, “No eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no mind has imagined what God has prepared for those who love him.”[a] 10 But[b] it was to us that God revealed these things by his Spirit. For his Spirit searches out everything and shows us God’s deep secrets. ~Asher Ang – KCC Ministry Acts 20:24 New Living Translation (NLT) 24 But my life is worth nothing to me unless I use it for finishing the work assigned me by the Lord Jesus—the work of telling others the Good News about the wonderful grace of God.

Book The Inner Game of Tennis

Download or read book The Inner Game of Tennis written by W. Timothy Gallwey and published by Random House Trade Paperbacks. This book was released on 1997-05-27 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The timeless guide to achieving the state of “relaxed concentration” that’s not only the key to peak performance in tennis but the secret to success in life itself—now in a 50th anniversary edition with an updated epilogue, a foreword by Bill Gates, and an updated preface from NFL coach Pete Carroll “Groundbreaking . . . the best guide to getting out of your own way . . . Its profound advice applies to many other parts of life.”—Bill Gates, GatesNotes (“Five of My All-Time Favorite Books”) This phenomenally successful guide to mastering the game from the inside out has become a touchstone for hundreds of thousands of people. Billie Jean King has called the book her tennis bible; Al Gore has used it to focus his campaign staff; and Itzhak Perlman has recommended it to young violinists. Based on W. Timothy Gallwey’s profound realization that the key to success doesn’t lie in holding the racket just right, or positioning the feet perfectly, but rather in keeping the mind uncluttered, this transformative book gives you the tools to unlock the potential that you’ve possessed all along. “The Inner Game” is the one played within the mind of the player, against the hurdles of self-doubt, nervousness, and lapses in concentration. Gallwey shows us how to overcome these obstacles by trusting the intuitive wisdom of our bodies and achieving a state of “relaxed concentration.” With chapters devoted to trusting the self and changing habits, it is no surprise then, that Gallwey’s method has had an impact far beyond the confines of the tennis court. Whether you want to play music, write a novel, get ahead at work, or simply unwind after a stressful day, Gallwey shows you how to tap into your utmost potential. In this fiftieth-anniversary edition, the principles of the Inner Game shine through as more relevant today than ever before. No matter your goals, The Inner Game of Tennis gives you the definitive framework for long-term success.

Book excerpt: Erin never thought life could get any harder, being in eighth grade. She tried to convince her mom she had a split personality, but her mom denied it all. The meanest of friends are in her life, and she thought that would cause her to have another personality. Her crush, Tommy, never really noticed her before, not until the real personality did came along just when Erin was beginning to think she may just be an average teenage girl. Anne was strong, loud, and opposite of Erin. She wasnt afraid to do or say what was on her mind. Erin noticed things happening to her life she didnt understand. She blacked out a lot, and people told her thinkgs she couldnt remember doing. Erin actually found herself becoming closer to Tommy, and although she didnt understand why, she could care less. Erins friends were vanishing before her very eyes as well. She could feel the tension around them, and learned she wasnt friends with them anymore. The only one who stuck around with her was Tyler, who was trying to figure out what happened to Erin. When the truth was revealed, Erin went into shock and hid her face from the world. Only Tommy and Anne could bring her back if that was even possible. The thing Erin knew was that she was right. Erin always had to be right, and no matter what, she knew her mom had been wrong all along. She did have a split personality, but her greatest challenge is getting over her shyness, her abusive friends, and life as she knew it. Writing this story took about a year, maybe a little longer than that, because I took a break from writing it. It was fun to write though, because it relates to what my life was almost like in eighth grade. Of course, none of that actually happened to me or anyone else. The character, Erin, is based off of myself though, shy, quiet to some people, having a crush on someone. Anne is just a cool girl anyone would love to meet, as long as they arent on her bad side. She could beat nearly anyone up, although it wouldnt seem like it at first glance. Erin is just invisible to others, not really seen until Anne showed up. When Anne would tell people to call her Anne, it was obvious for someone to be confused or freaked out that she was going off another name other than Erin, because they thought it was Erin. Tommy is just a cute boy in Erins eyes, that has had a crush on her for a while. He never noticed her much until well, until Anne showed up! When he heard about what she did to Heidi, and how she back-stabbed her and the others, he didnt think they were talking about the same person. Thats how unbelievable it was that Erin and Anne were the same person in a way. I liked Tyler the most, because she resembles one of my friends, shes smart, and almost just like the character. In the story Tyler and Erin seem closer than everyone else, but it isnt really like that for my friend and me. This story came into my mind after I learned that a split personality isnt just something you read in a fantasy book, but its a real mental issue in the world. I found it interesting and so I decided to write about a girl who has problems at home, but mostly a problem with her harsh friends. Anne is just the personality that made her who she finally is, and wanted to be. This is something written for any modern day person who understands, or wants to understand, what its like to be alone in the world, and soon find what you need to pick yourself up and move on. I know there is many people out there who knows what its like to be alone, and have no friends, and I really want this story to get those people to be positive and keep moving forward, and never give up. Or for anyone who can relate in any way to this story I guess, then I hope they really enjoy it. A story where a girl faces what she knew all along to be a split personality, but was ignored her request of friendship and knowledge. A sort of romance, of some kind, where the two are pushed together by a third person, and e

Book Hardcourt Confidential

Download or read book Hardcourt Confidential written by Patrick McEnroe and published by Hachette Books. This book was released on 2010-06-08 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An entertaining and unfiltered look at professional tennis as only Patrick McEnroe can offer. Patrick McEnroe has been in the world of professional tennis in one way or another for most of his life. As a player, coach, and ESPN commentator, he's seen it all. The significant tennis books of recent years have all been autobiographies--famous players burnishing their image or attempting to set the record straight within carefully controlled memoirs. No one has been willing to do a book that pulls back the curtain and presents an honest, no-holds-barred look into the ultimate gentleman's sport and the larger-than-life personalities that inhabit it. Patrick McEnroe does just that. Curious to know which marquee player threw a tantrum and bailed early on a tournament? Why Roger Federer, presumably the greatest player of all time, has a losing head-to-head record with Rafael Nadal? Why certain tennis prodigies burned out early? The real role of coaches like Nick Bollettieri? Which player is as much of a diva off the court as on? The greatest match ever played? In Hardcourt Confidential, McEnroe uses his twenty-five-plus years in the trenches of the game to tell true tales and wild stories about the players you think you know (from Sampras to Agassi to Roddick to the Williams sisters), how and why the game has changed since he first swung a racket, and what the future holds in store for American tennis. McEnroe takes an unapologetic look at the men, women, and events of the past three decades, right up to the epic Federer vs. Nadal rivalry that dominates the game today. He's got a lot to say and he's not afraid to say it.

Book excerpt: The #1 New York Times bestselling author of the Gossip Girl series brings her sharp-eyed and irresistible wit to this “quirky novel of lovable misfits” (Publishers Weekly) chronicling a year in the lives of four families in an upscale Brooklyn neighborhood as they seek purpose and community—until one unforgettable night at a raucous neighborhood party knocks them to their senses. Welcome to Cobble Hill. In this eclectic Brooklyn neighborhood, private storms brew amongst four married couples and their children. There’s ex-groupie Mandy, so underwhelmed by motherhood and her current physical state that she fakes a debilitating disease to get the attention of her skateboarding, ex-boyband member husband Stuart. There’s the unconventional new school nurse, Peaches, on whom Stuart has an unrequited crush, and her disappointing husband Greg, who wears noise-cancelling headphones—everywhere. A few blocks away, Roy, a well-known, newly transplanted British novelist, has lost the thread of his next novel and his marriage to indefatigable Wendy. Around the corner, Tupper, the nervous, introverted industrial designer with a warehouse full of prosthetic limbs struggles to pin down his elusive artist wife Elizabeth. Throw in two hormonal teenagers, a ten-year-old pyromaniac, a drug dealer pretending to be a doctor, and a lot of hidden cameras, and you’ve got a combustible mix of egos, desires, and secrets bubbling in brownstone Brooklyn. “Breezy, witty, and compulsively fun to read” (Kirkus Reviews), Cobble Hill is highly entertaining portrait of contemporary family life and the colorful characters who call Brooklyn home.

Book excerpt: The love affair between the book world and the tennis world has become legendary. For years, great authors have lauded the storylike quality of this beloved sport. Like a great novel, tennis features a protagonist and antagonist; a clear conflict and resolution; and a beginning, middle, and an end. Love Stories, a literate and eloquent collection of short stories, excerpts from novels and screenplays, brings together some of the most evocative writing on tennis by the best of these masters.Written by classic novelists like Vladimir Nabokov and John Updike, as well as rising young stars, many of these stories dramatize issues of class and status (to this day, competitors at Wimbledon are referred to as Ladies and Gentleman) as well as exploring issues of race and love and sex. These writings are arranged by topic with sections on men's and women's singles, mixed doubles -- even a round robin of on-court murders selected from tennis mysteries. Love Stories will engage all tennis fans and fiction lovers with sparkling reflections from such superstar writers as: -- Ellen Gilchrist (from The Land of Dreamy Dreams) on Country Club Competition-- Martin Amis (from The Information) on Gentleman's Singles-- Margaret Atwood (The Man from Mars) on Ladies' Singles-- John Updike (Separating) on Match Point-- David Foster Wallace (from Infinite Jest) on Junior Tennis-- Anne Lamott (from Crooked Little Heart) on Cheating
