Book excerpt: Nightclubs are closing at such a rate in Britain - down from an estimated 4,200 in 1994 to around 1,700 in 2017 - that they could soon be a relic of a bygone age. This book is set in the period from the mid 1970's to the mid 1980's. The country was emerging from a time of grim austerity with industrial strikes and the imposed 3-day working week. People still needed to enjoy themselves, though, and with pubs back then closing at 11 pm, many found their fun at the nightclub during this golden age of disco. What was it like to be a part of it all? This is an account of one young man's journey through clubland, experiencing the glamour and hedonism, and inevitably finding love. But, there was also the harsh life behind the scenes: the daily grind, constant insecurity, and the threat of physical violence. With its tales of love and laughter, tears and tragedy, this is a unique insight into a social and cultural aspect of British life that could soon be gone forever.

Book excerpt: Twentieth Century Drifter: The Life of Marty Robbins is the first biography of this legendary country music artist and NASCAR driver who scored sixteen number-one hits and two Grammy awards. Yet even with fame and fortune, Marty Robbins always yearned for more. Drawing from personal interviews and in-depth research, biographer Diane Diekman explains how Robbins saw himself as a drifter, a man always searching for self-fulfillment and inner peace. Born Martin David Robinson to a hardworking mother and an abusive alcoholic father, he never fully escaped the insecurities burned into him by a poverty-stricken nomadic childhood in the Arizona desert. In 1947 he got his first gig as a singer and guitar player. Too nervous to talk, the shy young man walked onstage singing. Soon he changed his name to Marty Robbins, cultivated his magnetic stage presence, and established himself as an entertainer, songwriter, and successful NASCAR driver. For fans of Robbins, NASCAR, and classic country music, Twentieth Century Drifter: The Life of Marty Robbins is a revealing portrait of this well-loved, restless entertainer, a private man who kept those who loved him at a distance.

The anthology explores the people behind the political question: Should abortion be legal? Our Choices, Our Lives takes the abortion issue to a new level. Women's personal testimonies about their abortion experiences reveal the liberating, sometimes poignant, reality that can accompany the choice to end an unplanned and unwanted pregnancy. Women's health care workers, from counselors to doctors, compassionately bear witness to women's abortion experiences, and provide patients with medical and educational services in an environment that can be physically and emotionally dangerous to both themselves and their patients. Book excerpt: "I don't know where he's buried, but if I did I'd piss on his grave." —Jerry Wexler, best friend and mentor Here Comes the Night: Bert Berns and the Dirty Business of Rhythm and Blues is both a definitive account of the New York rhythm and blues world of the early '60s, and the harrowing, ultimately tragic story of songwriter and record producer Bert Berns, whose meteoric career was fueled by his pending doom. His heart damaged by rheumatic fever as a youth, doctors told Berns he would not live to see twenty–one. Although his name is little remembered today, Berns worked alongside all the greats of the era—Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, Ahmet Ertegun and Jerry Wexler, Burt Bacharach, Phil Spector, Gerry Goffin and Carole King, anyone who was anyone in New York rhythm and blues. In seven quick years, he went from nobody to the top of the pops—producer of monumental R&B classics, songwriter of "Twist and Shout," "My Girl Sloopy" and others. His fury to succeed led Berns to use his Mafia associations to muscle Atlantic Records out of a partnership and intimidate new talents like Neil Diamond and Van Morrison he signed to his record label, only to drop dead of a long expected fatal heart attack, just when he was seeing his grandest plans and life's ambitions frustrated and foiled.
