The Gonzaga, the ruling family of Mantua, had long supported scholarship and dreamed of founding an institution of higher learning within the city. In the early seventeenth century they joined forces with the Jesuits, a powerful intellectual and religious force, to found one of the most innovative universities of the time. Paul F. Grendler provides the first book in any language about the Peaceful University of Mantua, its official name. He traces the efforts of Duke Ferdinando Gonzaga, a prince savant who debated Galileo, as he made his family’s dream a reality. Ferdinando negotiated with the Jesuits, recruited professors, and financed the school. Grendler examines the motivations of the Gonzaga and the Jesuits in the establishment of a joint civic and Jesuit university. The University of Mantua lasted only six years, lost during the brutal sack of the city by German troops in 1630. Despite its short life, the university offered original scholarship and teaching. It had the first professorship of chemistry more than 100 years before any other Italian university. The leading professor of medicine identified the symptoms of angina pectoris 140 years before an English scholar named the disease. The star law professor advanced new legal theories while secretly spying for James I of England. The Jesuits taught humanities, philosophy, and theology in ways both similar to and different from lay professors. A superlative study of education, politics, and culture in seventeenth-century Italy, this book reconsiders a period in Italy’s history often characterized as one of feckless rulers and stagnant learning. Book excerpt: The Society of Jesus began a tradition of collecting books and curating those collections at its foundation. These libraries were important to both their European sites and their missions; they helped build a global culture as part of early modern European evangelization. When the Society was suppressed, the Jesuits’ possessions were seized and redistributed, by transfer to other religious orders, confiscation by governments, or sale to individuals. These possessions were rarely returned, and when, in 1814, the Society was restored, the Jesuits had to begin to build new libraries from scratch. Their practices of librarianship, though not their original libraries, left an intellectual legacy which still informs library science today. While there are few European Jesuit universities left, institutions of higher learning administered by the Society of Jesus remain important to the intellectual development of students and communities around the world, supported by large, rich library collections.

I tradizionali manuali di storia della pedagogia, da questo punto di vista, segnano il passo, poiché concepiscono la storia educativa sostanzialmente come storia delle idee e del pensiero dei grandi Autori e Ideologi del passato, non tanto come storia di fatti ed eventi educativo-formativi che hanno segnato realmente i passaggi epocali della trasmissione dei saperi, delle pratiche, dell’identità stessa. Ma la ricerca contemporanea nasce ancora da quella storica, dove lo studio delle esperienze socio-educative fondamentali dell'uomo o la storia della mentalità formativa sono inevitabilmente fonte di esperienza per costruire o ricostruire le azioni formative del presente. A partire dalla modernità, gli orientamenti formativi ratificano un’esigenza percepita diffusamente, di responsabilità (umanesimo metodologico: Barocco, Scienza Nuova, Illuminismo) e di intenzionalità formative (umanesimo storico e dialettico: Romanticismo e movimenti dell’Ottocento e Primo Novecento), di valorizzazione delle potenzialità del singolo, che rifiuta le forme di omologazione e standardizzazione di pensiero e atteggiamenti che frammentano e impoveriscono la condizione esistenziale degli individui. Lanciando uno sguardo al futuro sulla base del passato la ricerca storico-educativa si conclude con la proposta di un framework dinamico dell’eco-identità inteso come contributo per elaborare un nuovo progetto di uomo per la formazione contemporanea.

Book excerpt: In this commanding study, Dr Maryks offers a detailed analysis of early modern Jesuit confessional manuals to explore the order's shifting attitudes to confession and conscience. Drawing on his census of Jesuit penitential literature published between 1554 and 1650, he traces in these works a subtly shifting theology influenced by both theology and classical humanism. In particular, the roles of 'Tutiorism' (whereby an individual follows the law rather than the instinct of their own conscience) and 'Probabilism' (which conversely gives priority to the individual's conscience) are examined. It is argued that for most of the sixteenth century, books such as Juan Alfonso de Polanco's Directory for Confessors espousing a Tutiorist line dominated the market for Jesuit confessional manuals until the seventeenth century, by which time Probabilism had become the dominating force in Jesuit theology. What caused this switch, from Tutiorism to Probablism, forms the central thesis of Dr Maryks' book. He believes that as a direct result of the Jesuits adoption of a new ministry of educating youth in the late 1540s, Jesuit schoolmasters were compelled to engage with classical culture, many aspects of which would have resonated with their own concepts of spirituality. In particular Ciceronian humanitas and civiltà, along with rhetorical principles of accommodation, influenced Jesuit thinking in the revolutionary transition from medieval Tutiorism to modern Probabilism. By integrating concepts of theology, classical humanism and publishing history, this book offers a compelling account of how diverse forces could act upon a religious order to alter the central beliefs it held and promulgated.
