Download or read book Disability Affirmative Therapy written by Rhoda Olkin and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017-04-28 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Clinicians outside of rehabilitation psychology do not receive training on how to work with clients with disabilities. Nonetheless, given that people with disabilities comprise over 15% of the population, virtually all clinicians will have clients with disabilities in their practice. Without education or training in disability, clinicians are prone to make errors in estimating the role of disability in the presenting problems and the case formulation. Disability-Affirmative Therapy (D-AT) helps clinicians put the disability of a client into proper focus, without making one of the usual mistakes associated with cross-cultural therapy: overinflating the role of the disability, or underestimating its profound effects. D-AT provides a template for evaluation - nine areas to be discussed with the client - that allows understanding of the client's lifetime experiences with disability. The template is not a theory of therapy, but an overlay onto the therapist's own approach, thus having broad appeal and utility. D-AT is a positive and affirming approach to therapy with clients with disabilities, regardless of the theory of therapy used. The book contains many vignettes to illustrate key points and an extended case example to which the D-AT template is applied. Grounded in social and clinical psychology research, this book will be an important and unique guide to all clinicians working with clients with disabilities and their families.
Download or read book Golden Darkness written by Robert Grajewski and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2010-10 with total page 431 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Twenty-five centuries ago, a dying tribal elder drinks from a spring in a cavern in the heart of a mountain in Western Africa. The spring glows with a soft golden light. As the elder drinks, the water of the spring transforms the very essence of his being, and the mysteries which separate humanity from the divine are unlocked and bridged. He becomes the Firstborn of an ancient tradition hidden among the people and legends of the West African savanna. In the wooded foothills of present-day Switzerland, three very old men- ancient men of the ancient tradition-prepare to confront the dark fulfillment of a prophecy foretold by the Firstborn. These three possess mental and physical abilities which seem limitless-abilities enabling them to perform miraculous works once thought to be the exclusive domain of the gods of human belief throughout the ages. The dark one, the fulfillment of the ancient prophecy, is equally empowered- the unexpected product of medical science overreaching its intended result. However, this one does not wish to remain hidden. Through the miraculous signs and wonders which he can perform, he desires to draw thousands to himself as an object of boundless, cultish worship. He longs to be their dark messiah, and his cult of fear and death has already started to grow. The three ancient Africans have been waiting centuries for this dark one to appear-the fulfillment of the ancient prophecy-and only they stand in his way. The grains of truth embodied in all mythology will find reality in this confrontation pitting supernatural good against supernatural evil. The confrontation was prophesized, the outcome was not.

Book excerpt: Is theirs a match made in heaven…or hell? "I need you to read this book. I need you to love Nick like I do. I need you to realize that sometimes Love isn’t enough……Sometimes Love hurts." Angie J, Twinsie Talk Book Blog Nick Channing, drummer for Fully Automatic, has never taken relationships seriously. He’s had fun and met dozens of women—mostly one-night stands—and he prefers it that way. From his parents to his friends, he’s witnessed love and relationships firsthand and believes women are nothing but a headache. Nick, Brad, and Val team up again to launch her new band Val Hella. There’s one problem, though: they still need a bassist. They audition dozens of women, trying to find the perfect one and settle on Sabrina, known onstage simply as Sinna, a bad ass metal head who’s perfect for the band: pierced, tattooed, dressed in black from head to toe, and she handles her bass with precision. She is a force to be reckoned with and Nick is smitten. When Nick gets her alone the first time to lay on the charm, he’s met with a coolness he’s never experienced. Sabrina is mysterious and thoroughly unimpressed with Nick and his behavior, and that’s when he decides he has to have her. As he falls headlong for her, he discovers her secrets, one dark shadow at a time. He thinks she loves him back, but he can’t be sure. By the time he’s completely down the rabbit hole, his heart’s so entangled, he fears he might not be able to save himself. Can she save him or will she wreck him for all time?

Download or read book What Every Therapist Needs to Know written by Michael Karson and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2018-06-20 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the ubiquity of knowledge on too many topics relevant to psychotherapy and life problems, it is difficult for therapists to muddle through and stay up-to-date. Therapists often have to choose between braving a bewildering onslaught of information and wishfully disregarding all that’s out there. What Every Therapist Needs to Know answers for therapists the practical, humble question, “What do I need to know about a topic to practice competently?” This book provides an engaging overview on the topics that working clinicians need to know about, while drawing parallels between the therapist’s professional growth and the patient’s personal growth. Foundational knowledge on learning, life, and psychology segues into the therapy topics of conflict resolution, the working alliance, the therapeutic frame, technique, and feedback. What Every Therapist Needs to Know emphasizes the application of psychological theories to the therapy itself and not just to the patient’s life.
Download or read book This Scorched Earth written by William Gear and published by Macmillan + ORM. This book was released on 2018-04-03 with total page 773 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Scorched Earth is an amazing tour de force depicting a family’s journey from near-devastation in the Civil War to their rebirth in the American West, from New York Times bestselling author William Gear. The Civil War tore at the very roots of our nation and destroyed most of a generation. In rural Arkansas, the Hancocks were devastated by that war. They not only lost everything, but experienced an unimaginable hell. How does a traumatized human being put themselves back together? Where does a person begin to heal his or her broken mind...and does one choose damnation or redemption? For the Hancock siblings: Doc, Sarah, Butler, and Billy, the American frontier becomes a metaphor for the wilderness within—raw, and capable of being shaped. Self-salvation, however, always comes with a price. Their journey is a testament to the power of love...and the American spirit. This is their story. And ours. Download or read book Mother American Night written by John Perry Barlow and published by Crown. This book was released on 2019-06-04 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Perry Barlow’s wild ride with the Grateful Dead was just part of a Zelig-like life that took him from a childhood as ranching royalty in Wyoming to membership in the Internet Hall of Fame as a digital free speech advocate. Mother American Night is the wild, funny, heartbreaking, and often unbelievable (yet completely true) story of an American icon. Born into a powerful Wyoming political family, John Perry Barlow wrote the lyrics for thirty Grateful Dead songs while also running his family’s cattle ranch. He hung out in Andy Warhol’s Factory, went on a date with the Dalai Lama’s sister, and accidentally shot Bob Weir in the face on the eve of his own wedding. As a favor to Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Barlow mentored a young JFK Jr. and the two then became lifelong friends. Despite being a freely self-confessed acidhead, he served as Dick Cheney’s campaign manager during Cheney’s first run for Congress. And after befriending a legendary early group of computer hackers known as the Legion of Doom, Barlow became a renowned internet guru who then cofounded the groundbreaking Electronic Frontier Foundation. His résumé only hints of the richness of a life lived on the edge. Blessed with an incredible sense of humor and a unique voice, Barlow was a born storyteller in the tradition of Mark Twain and Will Rogers. Through intimate portraits of friends and acquaintances from Bob Weir and Jerry Garcia to Timothy Leary and Steve Jobs, Mother American Night traces the generational passage by which the counterculture became the culture, and it shows why learning to accept love may be the hardest thing we ever ask of ourselves.
