Book The Most Important Scientific Discovery of All Time

Download or read book The Most Important Scientific Discovery of All Time written by And the Scientfic Revolution Going on Right Now and published by Strategic Book Publishing. This book was released on 2011-11 with total page 147 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A basic claim of this book is that modern science has found us humans to be much less smart and rational than we have throughout our long history led ourselves to believe we are. Because of this important difference, we humans are much more likely than we think to cause our own nuclear extinction in the near future. Although Ed McGrath has been a college graduate and interested in science most of his life, he majored in other subjects until he decided to become a psychology professor in his early forties. He returned to California State University in Los Angeles and achieved perfect grades in experimental psychology as an undergraduate and for his master's degree. He then successfully fulfilled the course requirements for a Ph.D. at the University of California. Discovering that human psychology was not based on much evidence, he also attended anthropology lectures on human evolution, hoping to find improvement potential for psychology. However, one professor warned Ed that he and the five professors on Ed's Ph.D. research committee did not like Ed's reputation for questioning the lack of testable evidence in classes and seminars, and eventually dismissed him from the Ph.D. program.Although Ed was initially disappointed, he found time to inquire into other related modern scientific discoveries. He began to see new and more important relationships among some of these discoveries and his own beliefs. That set of related discoveries eventually became an important component of this book. About the Author: Ed McGrath is a retired property tax expert, assessor and realtor. Originally from New York City, he now lives near Pasadena, California. Book High Performance Discovery In Time Series

Download or read book High Performance Discovery In Time Series written by Dennis Elliott Shasha and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2004-06-03 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Time-series data—data arriving in time order, or a data stream—can be found in fields such as physics, finance, music, networking, and medical instrumentation. Designing fast, scalable algorithms for analyzing single or multiple time series can lead to scientific discoveries, medical diagnoses, and perhaps profits. High Performance Discovery in Time Series presents rapid-discovery techniques for finding portions of time series with many events (i.e., gamma-ray scatterings) and finding closely related time series (i.e., highly correlated price and return histories, or musical melodies). A typical time-series technique may compute a "consensus" time series—from a collection of time series—to use regression analysis for predicting future time points. By contrast, this book aims at efficient discovery in time series, rather than prediction, and its novelty lies in its algorithmic contributions and its simple, practical algorithms and case studies. It presumes familiarity with only basic calculus and some linear algebra. Topics and Features: *Presents efficient algorithms for discovering unusual bursts of activity in large time-series databases * Describes the mathematics and algorithms for finding correlation relationships between thousands or millions of time series across fixed or moving windows *Demonstrates strong, relevant applications built on a solid scientific basis *Outlines how readers can adapt the techniques for their own needs and goals *Describes algorithms for query by humming, gamma-ray burst detection, pairs trading, and density detection *Offers self-contained descriptions of wavelets, fast Fourier transforms, and sketches as they apply to time-series analysis This new monograph provides a technical survey of concepts and techniques for describing and analyzing large-scale time-series data streams. It offers essential coverage of the topic for computer scientists, physicists, medical researchers, financial mathematicians, musicologists, and researchers and professionals who must analyze massive time series. In addition, it can serve as an ideal text/reference for graduate students in many data-rich disciplines.

Book excerpt: There are three men whose contributions helped free science from the straitjacket of theology. Two of the three-Nicolaus Copernicus and Charles Darwin-are widely known and heralded for their breakthroughs. The third, James Hutton, never received the same recognition, yet he profoundly changed our understanding of the earth and its dynamic forces. Hutton proved that the earth was likely millions of years old rather than the biblically determined six thousand, and that it was continuously being shaped and re-shaped by myriad everyday forces rather than one cataclysmic event. In this expertly crafted narrative, Jack Repcheck tells the remarkable story of this Scottish gentleman farmer and how his simple observations on his small tract of land led him to a theory that was in direct confrontation with the Bible and that also provided the scientific proof that would spark Darwin's theory of evolution. It is also the story of Scotland and the Scottish Enlightenment, which brought together some of the greatest thinkers of the age, from David Hume and Adam Smith to James Watt and Erasmus Darwin. Finally, it is a story about the power of the written word. Repcheck argues that Hutton's work was lost to history because he could not describe his findings in graceful and readable prose. (Unlike Darwin's Origin of the Species, Hutton's one and only book was impenetrable.) A marvelous narrative about a little-known man and the science he founded, The Man Who Found Time is also a parable about the power of books to shape the history of ideas.

Now they have been reunited by destiny and are willing to sacrifice everything again—and again—to save a world on the brink of extinction. The Game of Shadows continues… Troubled by dreams of strange creatures and unfamiliar voices echoing in her head, Mary has always felt disconnected from this world—until she met the enigmatic stranger Michael. He knew about Mary’s past. He was in it. Searching for her. His soul mate. And it’s taken centuries to find her, to re-engage her in an ancient, celestial cause: find the Deceiver before he destroys the world. Haunted by scores of deaths—their own—Mary and Michael have drawn on the wisdom of the ages, and the power it has given them, to fight the most malevolent force known to man. Joining a select band of warriors, Mary and Michael are nearer to understanding the Deceiver and all he stands for. It’s a terrifying reality that also brings them closer to realizing their own destiny and purpose. And realizing that love—like evil—is eternal.
