Using data from the archives of the Venetian Terraferma, and compared with information available for elsewhere in Europe, Guido Alfani and Matteo Di Tullio demonstrate that the rise of the fiscal-military state served to increase economic inequality in the early modern period. Preindustrial fiscal systems tended to be regressive in nature, and increased post-tax inequality compared to pre-tax - in contrast to what we would assume is the case in contemporary societies. This led to greater and greater disparities in wealth, which were made worse still as taxes were collected almost entirely to fund war and defence rather than social welfare. Though focused on Old Regime Europe, Alfani and Di Tullio's findings speak to contemporary debates about the roots of inequality and social stratification.

The project's underlying idea is that the Mediterranean is of decisive importance for any investigation into the political and commercial relations between states of different size and constitutional structure in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. It thus scrutinises the practices, institutions and cultural tendencies of the region's ruling classes, from those of the Italian small states to those of the great powers. Salerno, Edigati, Angiolini, Addobbati and Zamora examine the theme of the small state by focusing on the Grand Duchy of Tuscany and its foreign policy centred on the free port of Livorno and the principle of neutrality, while Herrero and Aglietti describe how diplomats from the Republic of Genoa, the Dutch Republic and the consuls of the Italian small states helped preserve the European balance of power. Since war was a catalyst for the internal reorganisation of states, the correlation of war, trade and neutrality as processes of emulation is investigated by Stapelbroek, Alimento and Calafat, while the reception and circulation of theoretical models is recounted by Trampus, Schnakenbourg and Spagnesi. Book excerpt: This book provides a multidisciplinary approach for the study of the “abandonment” problem at the inter-section among urban studies, neo-institutionalist perspectives, and social ontology. An analytical framework (based on descriptive and operational issues, factors, reasons, policies) has been built to interpret the phenomenon of abandonment and possible ways of intervening. The work considers the Italian situation in general terms and examines the case study of Milan in depth. This case is interesting because it triggered public discussions on the problem of abandonment in a non-shrinking context. Moreover, recently, specific policies to cope with abandonment problem have been introduced. The purpose of the book is to show that the problem of the “abandonment” of urban buildings should be understood as a social fact and not as a brute fact. Thus, in this work the “abandoned” state of buildings is considered as not directly related to certain physical variables; rather, it entirely depends on human evaluations. Crucial information in this regard is how institutional frameworks (e.g. sets of rules of conduct) influence individual behaviour and actions through time. In this view, we may identify abandonment as a phenomenon intertwined with the actions of both private and public entities. The neo-institutional approach helps to highlight how the problem of abandonment is articulated with respect to property rights, formal constraints, reasons behind policy decisions, intervention strategies and implementations.
