  • Author : David M. Pomfret
  • Publisher : Stanford University Press
  • Release : 2015-12-16
  • ISBN : 0804796866

Download or read book Youth and Empire written by David M. Pomfret and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2015-12-16 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first study of its kind to provide such a broadly comparative and in-depth analysis of children and empire. Youth and Empire brings to light new research and new interpretations on two relatively neglected fields of study: the history of imperialism in East and South East Asia and, more pointedly, the influence of childhood—and children's voices—on modern empires. By utilizing a diverse range of unpublished source materials drawn from three different continents, David M. Pomfret examines the emergence of children and childhood as a central historical force in the global history of empire in the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries. This book is unusual in its scope, extending across the two empires of Britain and France and to points of intense impact in "tropical" places where indigenous, immigrant, and foreign cultures mixed: Hong Kong, Singapore, Saigon, and Hanoi. It thereby shows how childhood was crucial to definitions of race, and thus European authority, in these parts of the world. By examining the various contradictory and overlapping meanings of childhood in colonial Asia, Pomfret is able to provide new and often surprising readings of a set of problems that continue to trouble our contemporary world.

Book Poetry of the Civil Rights Movements in Australia and the United States 1960s 1980s

Download or read book Poetry of the Civil Rights Movements in Australia and the United States 1960s 1980s written by Ameer Chasib Furaih and published by Anthem Press. This book was released on 2024-09-03 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the poetries of two Aboriginal Australian poets, namely Oodgeroo Noonuccal (formerly Kath Walker; 1920–1993) and Lionel Fogarty (1958– ) and two African American Black Arts poets , namely Amiri Baraka (formerly Everett LeRoi Jones; 1934–2014) and Sonia Sanchez (1943– ) to demonstrate their role in the struggle for civil and human rights of their peoples from the 1960s. The book demonstrates commonalities and differences in the strategies of these poets’ literary and political resistance. These poet-activists, though ethnically diverse and geographically dispersed, share comparable socio-political concerns and aspirations. Their activism is not a reflection of a single ideological current, but a bricolage of many ideologies and perspectives. They have engaged in trans-Pacific political movements and transgressed the borders of any one ideological territory. It is important to establish Aboriginal and African American trans-Pacific communication because these poets have collaborated and engaged in global politics (whether in the form of Garveyism or the “transnation”). Their poetries are characterized by an irresistible drive towards international rhizomatic collaboration and engagement. This is a transcontinental literary influence exerted by African American poets on Aboriginal poets during the 1960s and beyond.

Book Persons of Interest

Download or read book Persons of Interest written by Pamela Burton and published by ANU Press. This book was released on 2022-04-29 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A world in upheaval; two lives lived under stress … This story is set in the social and political landscape of pre– and post–World War II. It tells two vastly different tales of Cecily and John’s lives in Australia and overseas, as nations clashed, and governments and international organisations tried to remake the world. Cecily Nixon knew that marrying John Burton would be bad for her. But she loved him and, impressed with this handsome, sullen young man and his belief that he could change the world for the better, saw her role in life as to serve the world through John. Cecily’s story is a deeply personal and psychological one of love, duty and betrayal that explores the complexities of relationships. In a world that overwhelmed her, Cecily searched for ‘wholeness’ and delved deep into her psyche to find herself and emerge from John’s shadow. John has been known as an influential and controversial young head of Australia’s Department of External Affairs – and as a would-be politician. It is less known that he was also an innovative farmer, bookseller, entrepreneur, arts patron and writer. He received international acclaim for his later work in conflict analysis and resolution. These combined stories of courage and achievement unfold amid political intrigue and psychological trauma. ASIO surveillance, love triangles, loyalty, infidelity and tragedy all play their part in the Burtons’ lives.

Book Fabulating Beauty

Download or read book Fabulating Beauty written by Andreas Gaile and published by Rodopi. This book was released on 2005 with total page 475 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Peter Carey is one of Australia's finest creative writers, much admired by both literary critics and a worldwide reading public. While academia has been quick to see his fictions as exemplars of postcolonial and postmodern writing strategies, his general readership has been captivated by his deadpan sense of humour, his quirky characters, the outlandish settings and the grotesqueries of his intricate plots. After three decades of prolific writing and multiple award-winning, Carey stands out in the world of Australian letters as designated heir to Patrick White. Fabulating Beauty pays tribute to Carey's literary achievement. It brings together the voices of many of the most renowned Carey critics in twenty essays (sixteen commissioned especially for this volume), an interview with the author, as well as the most extensive bibliography of Carey criticism to date. The studies represent a wide range of current perspectives on the writer's fictions. Contributors focus on issues as diverse as the writer's biography; his use of architectural metaphors; his interrogation of narrative structures such as myths and cultural master-plots; intertextual strategies; concepts of sacredness and references to the Christian tradition; and his strategies of rewriting history. Amidst predictions of the imminent death of 'postist' theory, the essays all attest to the ongoing relevance of the critical parameters framed by postmodernism and postcolonialism.

It follows Peter Carey's career from the nightmare-haunted stories of The Fat Man in History and War Crimes to the madcap satire of Bliss, from Illywhacker's picaresque landscapes to Oscar and Lucinda's glittering achievement, and the powerfully confronting vision of The Tax Inspector. Dancing on Hot Macadam is a lucid account of Peter Carey's fiction and its intriguing critical reception. It explores his preoccupation with imprisonment and metamorphosis, and the desire of his characters to escape from bewildering roles, relationships and societies.Dancing on Hot Macadam is another volume in the excellent Studies inAustralian Literature series ...
