Book Understanding by Design

Download or read book Understanding by Design written by Grant P. Wiggins and published by ASCD. This book was released on 2005 with total page 383 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is understanding and how does it differ from knowledge? How can we determine the big ideas worth understanding? Why is understanding an important teaching goal, and how do we know when students have attained it? How can we create a rigorous and engaging curriculum that focuses on understanding and leads to improved student performance in today's high-stakes, standards-based environment? Authors Grant Wiggins and Jay McTighe answer these and many other questions in this second edition of Understanding by Design. Drawing on feedback from thousands of educators around the world who have used the UbD framework since its introduction in 1998, the authors have greatly revised and expanded their original work to guide educators across the K-16 spectrum in the design of curriculum, assessment, and instruction. With an improved UbD Template at its core, the book explains the rationale of backward design and explores in greater depth the meaning of such key ideas as essential questions and transfer tasks. Readers will learn why the familiar coverage- and activity-based approaches to curriculum design fall short, and how a focus on the six facets of understanding can enrich student learning. With an expanded array of practical strategies, tools, and examples from all subject areas, the book demonstrates how the research-based principles of Understanding by Design apply to district frameworks as well as to individual units of curriculum. Combining provocative ideas, thoughtful analysis, and tested approaches, this new edition of Understanding by Design offers teacher-designers a clear path to the creation of curriculum that ensures better learning and a more stimulating experience for students and teachers alike.

Book Emissions performance standards

    Book Details:
  • Author : Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: Energy and Climate Change Committee
  • Publisher : The Stationery Office
  • Release : 2010-12-02
  • ISBN : 9780215555472
  • Pages : 132 pages

Download or read book Emissions performance standards written by Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: Energy and Climate Change Committee and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2010-12-02 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Coalition Agreement contained a commitment to establish an emissions performance standard (EPS) that will prevent coal-fired power stations unless sufficiently equipped with carbon capture and storage (CCS). It is felt that the existing policy framework, including EU Emissions Trading System (ETS), the Renewables Obligation and the Carbon Capture and Storage demonstration programme are not sufficient to deliver the level of investment in new low-carbon generating capacity needed to meet emissions reduction targets. It is also felt that interactions and overlaps of an EPS with existing policies are not sufficiently understood and an independent review of regulations and market reforms in the electricity sector is called for. Emissions Performance Standards are seen to offer a more certain and predictable way to prevent locking in to high carbon infrastructure and that is in itself adequate justification for its implementation. There are, though, concerns that a poorly designed EPS could have a range of unintended consequences including: uncertainty for investors; prevention of adequate capacity to meet peak demand; driving investment elsewhere in Europe; and too great an impact on the electricity prices consumers have to pay

Drawing from a 5-year design research collaboration between the REAL Lab at Harvard GSD and the University of Bergamo, this book unfolds the experiential facets of our technologically-mediated relationship with space in the fields of architecture, urbanism and art. The book attempts to describe what makes an environment “responsive” in the form of a design manifesto, introducing ten attributes or principles at both methodological and experiential levels. Critically articulated from the perspective of leading experts, scholars and professionals, the ideas explored are unpacked through speculative urban visions and design concepts at different timeframes, contexts and scales ranging from smart artifacts to smart cities.
