Download or read book On the Commodity Trail written by Alison Hulme and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-06-03 with total page 141 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following the journey of eight bargain store objects, Alison Hulme reveals the complex story behind society’s simplest and cheapest commodities. Inspired by Walter Benjamin’s Arcades Project, On the Commodity Trail explores the colourful and fascinating histories of everyday objects.Along the way, we observe raw materials on municipal rubbish dumps in China, newly re-made products in the world’s largest wholesale market, and take a journey across the seas, to bargain stores in Europe and North America, arriving finally in the homes of consumers. Weaving together narratives from the people we meet at different parts of the commodity chain – waste peddlers, wholesalers, store owners, and shoppers – the book examines the places and people at the heart of these localized yet immense global networks.Unlike other investigations of commodity chains, this study does not chart a straightforward trajectory from production to consumption. Instead, it demonstrates that the low-end commodity chain is one of constant rupture in which products are made and re-made, blurring the dividing line between producing and consuming. An ethnography of material culture as well as an examination of commodity culture at a time of economic downturn, this deeply-engrossing book makes a unique contribution to our understanding of commodity chains and consumer culture.

Download or read book Urban Regeneration and Neoliberalism written by Clare Kinsella and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-10-29 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the concept of ‘home’ in Liverpool over phases of ‘regeneration’ following the Second World War. Using qualitative research in the oral history tradition, it explores what the author conceptualises as ‘forward-facing’ regeneration in the period up to the 1980s, and neoliberal regeneration interventions that ‘prioritise the past’ from the 1980s to the present. The author examines how the shift towards city centre-focused redevelopment and ‘event-led’ initiatives has implications for the way residents make sense of their conceptualisations of ‘home’, and demonstrates how the shift in regeneration focus, discourse, and practice, away from Liverpool’s neighbourhood districts and towards the city centre, has produced changes in the ways that residents identify with neighbourhoods and the city centre, with prominence being given to the latter. Employing Pierre Bourdieu’s concepts of habitus and field as mechanisms for understanding different senses of home and shifts from localised views to globalised views, this book will appeal to those with interests in urban sociology, regeneration, geography, sociology, home cultures, and cities.

Download or read book Don t Stick Your Dick in a Blender written by Jonathan Roseland and published by Jonathan Roseland. This book was released on 2020-09-21 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Women are dangerous. Good, yet naive, men routinely wreck their lives because they “stick their dick in a blender” — having sex with the wrong kinds of women. STDs, unplanned pregnancies, false accusations, mental health headcases, and divorce make chasing skirts a dangerous game. While lesser men retreat from the pursuit of women into the pixel-powered pleasure world, you have faith that your hunt for a virtuous woman will be fruitful. You can’t take a time-machine back to a more decent age to find a marriageable woman. You’re not ready to give up on your genetic purpose and start banging sex robots, but you’re tired of the transient, meaningless flings with mediocre women. You’re likely underestimating just how risky sex, a relationship, or marriage is with the modern woman. But you’re also underestimating just how rewarding it is to win the commitment of “a nice girl” — a truly feminine woman, not at war with the natural order — and intertwine your essence with hers. "Don’t Stick Your Dick in a Blender” is an irreverent, politically incorrect exposition of the state of dating in the current year. And a playbook of counter-intuitive approaches, advanced social dynamics lifehacks, along with filtering strategies for avoiding the time-wasters and inglorious skanks. How to meet a nice girl… Meeting a wife-material woman - Yes, it’s still possible! Dating post-COVID-19 - The global pandemic/plandemic has changed the game, you must adapt. The truth about marrying an exotic foreign woman - Is it for you? Online dating - Navigating the digital minefield of fakers, flakes, liars, and scams. Mindset demystified - Deprogramming the mainstream (and counter-culture) mindsets that cost you love. Dating abroad - How to do it without getting royally screwed. Avoiding the friend zone - Advanced persuasion and sexual signaling methods. Seducing a virgin - Why this really matters and how to do it... Eliciting yielding Yin energy - Inspiring a woman to adopt your values. Cultivating her devotion - Get laid like a “lover” and get respect like a patriarchal provider. Tantric “sex hacks” - Up your bedroom skills with an arsenal of holistic biohacks (both ancient and cutting-edge) for life-changing sex. Losing your virginity - Perhaps you’re a frustrated virgin or “Incel” disappointed with all the crappy advice about how to lose your virginity. 33 steps are broken down for meaningfully losing your virginity. And in these pages, you’ll get the “red pills” on dating, sex, and the fairer sex without the hopelessness and cynicism. You’ll learn about the four red flags of a “blender” — deal-breakers that should make you back away slowly from a woman. You’ll learn what qualifies as a virtuous woman who you might have a future with. And, why there’s a lot of reasons to be optimistic about finding love and even getting married one day. This book is also a story of hope and redemption, the memoir of a reformed pickup artist who “enjoyed the decline” all the way from America and Colombia to Ukraine and found edifying joy and meaning between the voluptuous thighs of a beautiful Bulgarian woman on the edge of Europe.
Download or read book Feminism Self Presentation and Pinterest written by Emily S. Johnson and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2020-06-26 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Feminism, Self-Presentation, and Pinterest: The Labor of Wedding Planning argues that Pinterest, which has been largely criticized for perpetuating vapid stereotypical gender roles, is actually a dynamic digital curation tool that facilitates meaning-making around the important cultural event of the Western wedding. Emily S. Johnson, through a thorough examination of how aspiring brides use the platform to plan their weddings, found that Pinterest is a unique platform that offers brides the opportunity to construct their own wedding identity by engaging in creativity and exercising voice and agency during planning. Even if the content they are consuming does support tenets of patriarchy or gender roles, brides are able to make their own choices, rather than having their goals determined for them through societal or familial norms and expectations. The platform integrates both the online and offline “labors” of wedding planning as brides create meaning through the curation process and connect with the self as they execute their planning. Overall, Johnson argues that, far from the stereotypes of fantasizing about dream weddings and luxurious lifestyles that may be unrealistic, Pinterest gives brides increased ability to make their own, specialized vision come to life. Scholars of women’s studies, gender studies, communication, media studies, cultural studies, and rhetoric will find this book particularly useful.
