Book Lindokuhle Sobekwa I Carry Her Photo with Me

Download or read book Lindokuhle Sobekwa I Carry Her Photo with Me written by Lindokuhle Sobekwa and published by Steidl. This book was released on 2020-09-29 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A scrapbook story of mourning and disappearance in South Africa South African photographer Lindokuhle Sobekwa (born 1995) began this project after finding a family portrait with his sister Ziyanda's face cut out. He describes her as a secretive, rebellious and rough presence and recalls the dark day when she chased him and he was hit by a car: she disappeared hours later and returned only a decade later, ill. By this time, Sobekwa had become a photographer and realized the family had no picture of her. However, Ziyanda died before he could photograph her. Employing a scrapbook aesthetic with handwritten notes, I Carry Her Photo with Meis a means for Sobekwa to engage both with the memory of his sister and the wider implications of such disappearances--a troubling part of South Africa's history. The book complements his wider work on fragmentation, poverty and the long-reaching ramifications of apartheid and colonialism across all levels of South African society.

Book excerpt: Since 2015, French photographer Cyprien Clément-Delmas and South African photographer Lindokuhle Sobekwa have collaborated to create a portrait of Daleside, a small Afrikaner suburb south-east of Johannesburg, South Africa. Daleside, in the Gauteng Province, once had a predominantly white population and is isolated in the industrial outer suburbs of Johannesburg. Its separation has resulted in Daleside's residents becoming increasingly inward-facing, and in the space of a decade it has become an isolated ghost town with a dwindling population consisting of mostly mine workers and smallholders. Commissioned by Rubis Mécénat through their Of Soul and Joy programme, the resulting photographs provide a counterpoint--Clément-Delmas's images show dignified figures whose dreams are at odds with reality whereas Sobekwa's landscape portraits show no such escapism. Looking beyond the deep-seated Black/white binary, they depict the poverty afflicting Black and white residents alike as forgotten members of society stuck in a dead end. Contrary to his expectations of what he might find there, Sobekwa came face to face with the reality of Black and white residents experiencing the same poverty out of eyeshot of the tightly-guarded houses of the wealthy. In Daleside: Static Dreams, the images by each photographer are presented alongside each other in a foldout book so they can be read individually or as pairs.

Book excerpt: My Wingmen is a true account of my journey with angels. They entered my world during a period of inner reflection as I researched personal growth during a challenging life transition. The books I was drawn to came alive as I read about alternate realities and spiritual concepts. I witnessed these realities as my home became a stomping ground for angels and spirit guides, where I enjoyed their appearances and intervention. They showed me how to interpret and discern the lighter side of the earth realm, and they gave me examples of what clear expanded believing could accomplish. As I began to openly talk about prayer, my psychic senses began to blossom. I was embraced by two angels, and they offered me healing along with their companionship. They have become my teachers, and they have helped me connect with truths beyond my wildest dreams. It was in expanded thought that I was able to grasp a world that is clearer to me now, as this present-day drama fades to black. I have opened my arms to an enlightened world, because where there is love, there is no room for fear. Meet my wingmen, Archangel Michael and Archangel Raphael.

Book Do the Right Thing

Download or read book Do the Right Thing written by Mike Huckabee and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2008-11-18 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Governor Mike Huckabee entered the Republican presidential race, he was the ultimate dark horse, with almost no money, no consultants, and no name recognition beyond Arkansas. The so-called experts were highly amused by this former small state governor from blue-collar roots who also played bass in a rock band. He wouldn’t have a prayer against the well-connected and financially wired pros like Rudy Giuliani, Mitt Romney, and Fred Thompson. But Huckabee had one big advantage: a common sense message that connected with millions of people, and not just his fellow evangelical Christians. He spoke about family values, fair taxes, and helping hard-working, middle-class Americans in a tough economy. And to the dismay of some Republicans, he talked about fighting Wall Street greed and K Street corruption. Huckabee shocked the country by winning the all-important Iowa caucuses and seven other states, while spending far less than the other major candidates. He created an army of passionate volunteers and small donors, transforming his campaign into a true movement that will endure long after Election Day. Do The Right Thing is Huckabee’s amazing story, in his own words—from making commercials with Chuck Norris to meeting a Michigan woman who insisted on donating her wedding ring. But this is more than just a campaign memoir. It’s a vision for a smarter, fairer type of politics—“vertical politics”—that focuses on common sense solutions for education, health care, the economy, and many other issues. It’s not about right versus left; it’s about taking America up rather than down. Huckabee also shows how the Republican Party can heal its divisions—between social and fiscal conservatives, the wealthy and the middle class, the religious and the secular—and become a true majority party again.

Book excerpt: A debut coming-of-age novel that delicately illuminates the fullness of identity despite fractures in language, culture, and relationships In Silver Repetition, Lily Wang’s endless, perfect loops of memory and dream, loss and return, combine to create a formally inventive coming-of-age novel. Told from the perspective of a young Asian immigrant thoughtfully navigating dual identities, grief, family, migration, and modern relationships, this is a novel infused with the rich language of a poet. Having left China for Canada with her parents as a child, Yuè Yuè yearns to discover who she is as she nears the end of her undergraduate degree and starts a new relationship. In urgent poetic fragments, she seeks common ground with her Canadian-born younger sister and grieves the beloved cousin she lost touch with back home. After Yuè Yuè receives a call from a girl making accusations, her date ghosts her. Meanwhile, her mother’s illness advances like snow. On a walk in the woods, Yuè Yuè sees a little girl digging in the mud, but when she peeks behind the curtain of black hair, her own face haunts her. In a moving reunion, Yuè Yuè’s cousin comes to visit and everyone is caught, laughing, in the rain. The novel shows how, despite the weight of grief, isolation, and difference, even the most delicate family bonds can knit together tightly enough for the future to overcome the past.
