Download or read book The Other End of the Leash written by Patricia McConnell, Ph.D. and published by Ballantine Books. This book was released on 2009-02-19 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Learn to communicate with your dog—using their language “Good reading for dog lovers and an immensely useful manual for dog owners.”—The Washington Post An Applied Animal Behaviorist and dog trainer with more than twenty years’ experience, Dr. Patricia McConnell reveals a revolutionary new perspective on our relationship with dogs—sharing insights on how “man’s best friend” might interpret our behavior, as well as essential advice on how to interact with our four-legged friends in ways that bring out the best in them. After all, humans and dogs are two entirely different species, each shaped by its individual evolutionary heritage. Quite simply, humans are primates and dogs are canids (as are wolves, coyotes, and foxes). Since we each speak a different native tongue, a lot gets lost in the translation. This marvelous guide demonstrates how even the slightest changes in our voices and in the ways we stand can help dogs understand what we want. Inside you will discover: • How you can get your dog to come when called by acting less like a primate and more like a dog • Why the advice to “get dominance” over your dog can cause problems • Why “rough and tumble primate play” can lead to trouble—and how to play with your dog in ways that are fun and keep him out of mischief • How dogs and humans share personality types—and why most dogs want to live with benevolent leaders rather than “alpha wanna-bes!” Fascinating, insightful, and compelling, The Other End of the Leash is a book that strives to help you connect with your dog in a completely new way—so as to enrich that most rewarding of relationships.

Download or read book Layla the Ridgeless Rhodesian Ridgeback written by Bobby Brewster and published by Outskirts Press. This book was released on 2010-12 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Layla The Ridgeless Rhodesian RidgebackLaylas story is about being different. Layla shows how perseverance can overcome self-doubt and rejection. Her faith, hope and love overcome all obstacles. Why Layla? Hers is a very personal story that developed into the book you have before you. The words (640+-) are unchanged since it was written four years ago. The brilliant illustrations mesh seamlessly with the story.I work for the Boys and Girls Clubs of Delray Beach, Florida. For the past three years I have served as the Education Coordinator, bus driver, mentor and general fix-it person at the club. The Delray club serves 250 members with ages ranging from 6-18 years old. Regardless of which hat I wear, these children are the greatest teachers Ive encountered. Simply, I go to work to return that gift.Like Layla our children are considered by some to be at risk ? I think many agree that all of our children today are at risk. They have a myriad of influences and distractions that bombard and challenge even the brightest of them to keep their focus. When Layla was in an early proof stage I used small reading focus groups. I had them read in groups of 3-5 and I observed them. They read it, understood it, cried, smiled and many hugged me after they read it. That made me cry as well. You see, Laylas story is like many of our members stories. They too have been ignored and cast aside. For many, our club is their safe harbor. My target group is ages 6-9, yet all ages have enjoyed it. I realize Ridgeless Rhodesian Ridgeback is a mouthful but they handle it and usually laugh when they read it. Heres the real payoff for me. More than a dozen kids have said after reading Layla that they want to write a book. Now, Im not a seasoned childrens author but I did play some baseball and I know a grand slam from a double! What about professional educators? The response has been overwhelmingly positive. I dont say that in a prideful way because I had little to do with it. The story was on my heart. I sat out on my patio and wrote it on paper in less than 15 minutes. Thanks to a very special person in my life, Laylas story was brought out of a file and dusted off. Thanks to another special friend Laylas story was brought to life with exquisite illustrations. Finally, Layla teaches us that love suffers long, endures all things and never fails. I hope you fall in love with Layla as I did. Respectfully Submitted,Bobby Brewster185 NE 4th Ave. Delray Beach, Fl. 33483 -- 561-400-7799 -- [email protected]

Download or read book Dog Food Logic written by Linda P. Case, M.S. and published by Dogwise Publishing. This book was released on 2014-02-12 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Choosing the right dog food in a world with too many choices
Walking down the dog food aisle in a pet supply superstore can present you with an overwhelming number of choices. Reading about dog food on the internet can make your head spin with so many opinions and stories. And judging the content that you find on dog food packaging can be confusing and misleading. How can the average dog owner make an informed choice in accordance with her dog’s age, size and condition? In her latest book, author Linda Case describes how to make logical, evidence-based decisions for what to feed your dog amid all the options available.
You will learn
• How pet food marketers appeal to your emotions to persuade you to buy a particular type of dog food.
• To distinguish between scientific, evidence-based information and the anecdotal evidence which is so pervasive—and often misleading—in the dog food arena.
• Is there a scientific basis for dog foods designed specifically for puppies, senior dogs, canine athletes—even various breeds of dogs?
• How to read and evaluate all of the material included on a typical package of dog food from the ingredients and label claims (“Natural,” “Anti-Oxidant,” “Low Fat”),to the Nutrient Analysis and Nutritional Adequacy statements.
• How to avoid choice paralysis and the cognitive traps that can interfere with clear decision making.
What experts are saying about Dog Food Logic
Pet food is like a religion for many—but now those strong emotional ties can be backed up with fact. Linda Case separates fact from fiction, explains the complex terms and offers a guide to pet nutrition in simple to comprehend language. Unlike other books on this topic, there is no agenda here—except to present facts and then allow pet owners to make their own logical conclusions, letting the kibble drop where it may.
Steve Dale, CABC, columnist Tribune Content Agency; radio host Black Dog Radio Productions and WGN Radio (Chicago); contributing editor USA Weekend; special correspondent Cat Fancy; author Good Cat!

Download or read book There Are No Sad Dogs in Heaven written by Sonya Fitzpatrick and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2013-09-03 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our pets are part of the family. For many they’re as close as children; for some they may be our only children. And while most of us can expect that our children will outlive us, sadly, our pets almost never do. Losing a pet can be as difficult as losing any other family member; we grieve, we miss them, and, mostly, we want closure, to know that our furry, feathered, or scaled friends are okay, wherever they are. For years, animal communicator Sonya Fitzpatrick has helped pet owners cope with the loss of their beloved companions. Many of them ask the same questions: Is my pet happy? Why did this happen? Is it okay to get another pet? Using her personal experiences as well as the stories of the families she’s worked with, Sonya sheds some light on the questions that every grieving pet owner has, and assures the reader that there are, in fact, no sad dogs (or cats or birds or turtles or horses or cows) in heaven.
