Download or read book The Passage from Youth to Adulthood written by Pierluca Birindelli and published by University Press of America. This book was released on 2014-09-26 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Passage from Youth to Adulthood explores a society unanchored from culturally endorsed rites of passage, in which young people and adults appear to build their identities within a culture of dependency. In this book, author Pierluca Birindelli interviews Italian young adults still living with their parents, and focuses on how those individuals view the bedroom and the objects therein. From there, he analyzes self-narrations and longer autobiographies written by university students, measuring his impressions against sociological, psychological, and anthropological literature. Birindelli explores the paradigm of what he calls “intergenerational collusion,” in which fathers and sons are playing to the same script, heedless of the common good, the other, and the future. Finally, integrating the experience of young Americans abroad sparks transcultural reflections about the concept of play and the authenticity of social performance.

Download or read book I Am I Can written by DK and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2020-08-11 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I am strong. I am brave. I can handle anything. This book empowers your child by providing an affirmation for every single day of the year. With a different theme for each month – such as positivity, calm, and adventure – children can build their self-esteem and resilience by focusing on what matters to them, through the power of positive thinking. Perfect for children aged 7 to 9, this book not only educates but inspires. Affirmations tied to certain key events from history provide motivation and encouragement. On 17th April, learn about the Apollo 13 mission and discover how to stay calm under pressure. On 1st December, Rosa Parks’ refusal to give up her seat on the bus links to the affirmation “I stand up for myself and others.” Mindful activities encourage children to try practical techniques to explore the affirmations further – creating a “happiness jar” helps kids come up with their own affirmations, building a “coping wheel” empowers kids to manage stress, and making friendship bracelets helps enact the affirmation “I am a caring friend.” Affirmations have been proven to help overcome negative thoughts by reminding us of what matters. I Am, I Can use beautiful illustrations to bring the daily doses of wisdom to life and encourage visualization – a powerful tool in promoting self-belief and keeping anxiety at bay.
Download or read book YoungGiftedandFat written by Sharrell D. Luckett and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-11-15 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: YoungGiftedandFat is a critical autoethnography of "performing thin"– on the stage and in life. Sharrell D. Luckett’s story of weight loss and gain and playing the (beautiful, desirable, thin) leading lady showcases an innovative and interdisciplinary approach to issues of weight and self-esteem, performance, race, and gender. Sharrell structures her project with creative text, interviews, testimony, journal entries, dialogues, monologues, and deep theorizing through and about the abundance of flesh. She explores the politics of Black culture, and particularly the intersections of her lived and embodied experiences. Her body and body transformation becomes a critical praxis to evidence fat as a feminist issue, fat as a Black-girl-woman issue, and fat as an ideological construct that is as much on the brain as it is on the body. YoungGiftedandFat is useful to any area of research or course offering taking up questions of size politics at the intersections of race and sexuality.
Download or read book The Lost Boy the Doodlebug and the Mysterious Number 80 written by Stevie Henden and published by Troubador Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2013-03-28 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an eclectic and thought-provoking book, best defined as a modern day fairy tale in which the dreams and lives of four people are inexorably linked together across time, bound by love, friendship, heartache and fateDuring the London Blitz a young woman, Iris, has a vision while reading Tarot cards of two lovers in great peril and knows it will be her destiny to help them. Meanwhile Robert, a wounded and repressed Battle of Britain pilot, dreams of happiness and of a love he believes he can never have.In another time, Charlie, a troubled little boy with amazing blue-green eyes growing up in the repressed suburbs of 1950s South London, dreams of the number ‘80’ and knows only that it means something terrible and evil. Elsewhere, a dark, disturbed man dreams repeatedly of Charlie and knows it is his destiny to kill him. This time-travelling tale moves between present day Dulwich, World War Two London, the gay bars of the 1970s, Eva Peron’s Buenos Aires and Glastonbury Tor in 1989. It is a tale of great love and loss, destiny, tragedy, spiritual transformation and self-acceptance. It asks questions about how much of our lives are destined and how much can be altered and about what the effects of unintentional time travel would be on very ordinary people. This book can be interpreted on many different levels. On one it is a murder-mystery, on another an allegorical tale of spiritual transformation, on a third, a complex tale of two gay men’s individual journeys into adulthood and on a fourth, a simple and beautiful love story.

Download or read book The Atonal Music of Arnold Schoenberg 1908 1923 written by Bryan R. Simms and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2000-11-16 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between 1908 and 1923, Arnold Schoenberg began writing music that went against many of the accepted concepts and practices of this art. Largely following his intuition during these years, he composed some of the masterpieces of the modern repertoire--including Pierrot lunaire and Erwartung--works that have since provoked a large, though fragmented, body of critical and analytical writing. In this book, Bryan Simms combines a historical study with a close analytical reading of the music to give us a new and richer understanding of Schoenberg's seminal work during this period.

Download or read book Trauma Collective Trauma and Refugee Trajectories in the Digital Era written by Selam Kidane and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2021-10-21 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forced migration has become an inescapable reality of our world in the 21stcentury. Why? The traumatic experiences of refugees are key to understanding why people keep on the move despite enormous risks. This book sheds light into the psychological impact entailed in refugee trajectories. With findings mainly from Eritrean refugee communities in multiple locations, the underpinning research reveals alarming levels of individual and collective trauma. The book outlines a new approach for treatment: Trauma, Recovery, Understanding, Self-Help Therapy TRUST. The intervention was developed as a practical and low resource support to traumatised vulnerable refugees. TRUST utilises information technology to reduce levels of trauma, enabling refugees to build social and economic resilience as an alternative to pursuing risky migratory trajectories. The study concludes that providing psycho-social support is a more prudent alternative to managing forced migration and avoiding the use of hostile refugee polices that expose refugees to more trauma and put them at risk of heinous organised crimes including human trafficking. TRUST resulted in significant positive outcomes for refugee wellbeing even in deprived refugee camps.

Download or read book Thunder Below written by Eugene B. Fluckey and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2013-04-01 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The thunderous roar of exploding depth charges was a familiar and comforting sound to the crew members of the USS Barb, who frequently found themselves somewhere between enemy fire and Davy Jones's locker. Under the leadership of her fearless skipper, Captain Gene Fluckey, the Barb sank the greatest tonnage of any American sub in World War II. At the same time, the Barb did far more than merely sink ships-she changed forever the way submarines stalk and kill their prey. This is a gripping adventure chock-full of "you-are-there" moments. Fluckey has drawn on logs, reports, letters, interviews, and a recently discovered illegal diary kept by one of his torpedomen. And in a fascinating twist, he uses archival documents from the Japanese Navy to give its version of events. The unique story of the Barb begins with its men, who had the confidence to become unbeatable. Each team helped develop innovative ideas, new tactics, and new strategies. All strove for personal excellence, and success became contagious. Instead of lying in wait under the waves, the USS Barb pursued enemy ships on the surface, attacking in the swift and precise style of torpedo boats. She was the first sub to use rocket missiles and to creep up on enemy convoys at night, joining the flank escort line from astern, darting in and out as she sank ships up the column. Surface-cruising, diving only to escape, "Luckey Fluckey" relentlessly patrolled the Pacific, driving his boat and crew to their limits. There can be no greater contrast to modern warfare's long-distance, videogame style of battle than the exploits of the captain and crew of the USS Barb, where they sub, out of ammunition, actually rammed an enemy ship until it sank. Thunder Below! is a first-rate, true-life, inspirational story of the courage and heroism of ordinary men under fire. A Main Selection of the Military Book Club. Winner of the Rear Admiral Samuel Eliot Morison Award for Naval Literature given by the Naval Order of the United States, New York Commandery.

Download or read book Old Films Young Eyes written by Simone O. Elias and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2024-11-08 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why would a modern teenager find classic films enthralling? This book presents an eye-opening tour of how old movies foreshadowed, influenced--and continue to shape--popular culture in many surprising ways. From foreseeing today's image-dominated social media landscape to ushering rock music into the mainstream, and sparking elements of the #MeToo movement, classic movies remain relevant and inspiring. Despite prevailing attitudes that old films are outdated, many dramatically broke boundaries around racism and antisemitism. They predicted current trends in divorce and sexual relations. They helped shape current icons like Taylor Swift and Lady Gaga, as well as foreshadowing more sobering events such as the Covid-19 pandemic. A Gen Z-age cultural critic, author Simone O. Elias presents an insider's perspective on the socio-cultural impact of classic Hollywood films on a modern generation.
