Book Rediscovering My Inner Bitch

Download or read book Rediscovering My Inner Bitch written by Arlene C. Swirsky and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2007-09-05 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ninety-two thousand people wait for transplants every day, and Arlene C. Swirsky was one of them from November 2001 until September 2003, a decade after she was diagnosed with polycystic kidney disease. With a not-all-there elderly mother and a family simply trying to make life work, Swirsky finds herself engulfed by a confusing mixture of anxiety and guilt as she waits for a transplant organ. It isn't easy, and it certainly isn't pretty. As months become years, the waiting turns Swirsky into a new breed of modern woman, one prepared for all eventualities and all possible outcomes. Her inner bitch crawls out of hibernation to guide her-with questionable results, screaming failures, and, on the best of days, mighty miracles. With an unparalleled degree of honesty, humor, and vulnerability, Swirsky explores the gamut of thoughts and feelings that transplant patients cope with every day. Set against the lovely hills of central Massachusetts and the beaches of southern Maine, Rediscovering My Inner Bitch provides an unflinching glimpse into the soul of a woman waiting for someone to die so that she may live.

Book Transplanted

Download or read book Transplanted written by Allison Watson and published by Nimbus+ORM. This book was released on 2019-06-03 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A poignant, witty memoir of learning to cope with a frightening genetic disease—and of a life transformed thanks to an organ donor. When Allison Watson awoke that day, she knew she was in a hospital bed. That's all. She had no idea how much time had passed since she’d seen her family. When she tried to focus, her vision was blurry, and when she tried to wave someone down, she became so exhausted she thought she was dying. Hours later, when Watson was able to communicate, she asked a nurse if the news was good or bad. “It’s good news,” the nurse replied. “You had your lung transplant four days ago.” Many cystic fibrosis patients are living longer today, thanks, in part, to transplants—though they are not easy to obtain. In this candid memoir, Watson describes living under the shadow of this incurable disease; her special bond with her sister, Amy, who also grew up with CF; and her life-altering surgery in Toronto in 2014. ; the r. Nor was the road to full recovery. In this book, Watson, who cycled across Canada with her brother in 2008 to raise awareness of CF, describes her journey. “Watson tells her resilient story of living with cystic fibrosis (CF), her progressive lung damage, the stress of waiting for an organ donor, her lifesaving transplant and life in the almost five years since her major surgery.” —The Guardian (Prince Edward Island, Canada)

Book Incentives and Disincentives in Organ Donation

Download or read book Incentives and Disincentives in Organ Donation written by Ruiping Fan and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-05-02 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides the first systematic study on three types of incentives for organ donation. It covers extensive research conducted in four culturally different societies: Hong Kong, mainland China, Iran and the United States, and shows on the basis of the research that a new model of incentives can be constructed to enhance organ donation in contemporary societies. The book focuses on three types of incentives: honorary incentives, commonly adopted in the United States and other Western countries by offering things such as a thank-you card and a memorial park for donors to encourage donations motivated by pure altruism; compensationalist incentives, adopted in the Islamic Republic of Iran to encourage donation by providing monetary compensation to unrelated living donors for appreciating their altruistic contribution of donation; and familist incentives, implemented in Israel and mainland China to provide priority to organ transplantation to donors and/or their family members. The book demonstrates that a new model of incentives must go beyond offering only one type of incentives and should rather include different types of incentives that are practically effective, politically legitimate and ethically justifiable for particular societies. This implies that suitable incentive measures may vary from society to society to optimize organ donation. This book provides a clear reference for both the scholars and practitioners in the field of organ transplantation, as well as for general readers interested in bioethics and health care policy.

Book excerpt: Begun in 1994, The Atlanta Study is the first comprehensive investigation of its kind into near-death experiences (NDEs). The study's name hardly captures what lies behind it: life-and-death dramas played out in operating rooms and hospital beds--and simultaneous events unseen by medical personnel but reported with astonishing clarity and conviction by nearly 50 individuals who returned from death's door. Now the founder of The Atlanta Study, Dr. Michael Sabom reveals their impact on the people who have experienced them. From both medical and personal perspectives, he shares the electrifying stories of men and women from all walks of life and religious persuasions. He explores the clinical effect of the NDE on survival and healing and discloses surprising findings. He questions some common conclusions about NDEs. And he scrutinizes near-death experiences in the light of what the Bible has to say about death and dying, the realities of light and darkness, and the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Please God, don’t let him die! That moment in time began a medical journey for the couple that no one should ever have to live through. Together they faced uncertainties that would test Scott’s strength of spirit and fill Julie with a courage that would guide her as she became a caregiver for the man she loved. Now Julie shares their story in a loving tribute to Scott and to their beautiful life together; she also offers a helpful guide for all caregivers encountering their own challenges. This personal narrative shares the story of two lives that embarked on a sixteen-year journey through chronic illnesses that included Alzheimer’s and eventual grief, offering advice for caregivers along the way.
