Download or read book Ask a Manager written by Alison Green and published by Ballantine Books. This book was released on 2018-05-01 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the creator of the popular website Ask a Manager and New York’s work-advice columnist comes a witty, practical guide to 200 difficult professional conversations—featuring all-new advice! There’s a reason Alison Green has been called “the Dear Abby of the work world.” Ten years as a workplace-advice columnist have taught her that people avoid awkward conversations in the office because they simply don’t know what to say. Thankfully, Green does—and in this incredibly helpful book, she tackles the tough discussions you may need to have during your career. You’ll learn what to say when • coworkers push their work on you—then take credit for it • you accidentally trash-talk someone in an email then hit “reply all” • you’re being micromanaged—or not being managed at all • you catch a colleague in a lie • your boss seems unhappy with your work • your cubemate’s loud speakerphone is making you homicidal • you got drunk at the holiday party Praise for Ask a Manager “A must-read for anyone who works . . . [Alison Green’s] advice boils down to the idea that you should be professional (even when others are not) and that communicating in a straightforward manner with candor and kindness will get you far, no matter where you work.”—Booklist (starred review) “The author’s friendly, warm, no-nonsense writing is a pleasure to read, and her advice can be widely applied to relationships in all areas of readers’ lives. Ideal for anyone new to the job market or new to management, or anyone hoping to improve their work experience.”—Library Journal (starred review) “I am a huge fan of Alison Green’s Ask a Manager column. This book is even better. It teaches us how to deal with many of the most vexing big and little problems in our workplaces—and to do so with grace, confidence, and a sense of humor.”—Robert Sutton, Stanford professor and author of The No Asshole Rule and The Asshole Survival Guide “Ask a Manager is the ultimate playbook for navigating the traditional workforce in a diplomatic but firm way.”—Erin Lowry, author of Broke Millennial: Stop Scraping By and Get Your Financial Life Together

Both fell in love with Phyllis, who is engaged to be married to Brad Dennison, a church minister. Tragedy will befall them as choices are made and the inevitable crossing of paths occurs. The Deliverer is about temptation, worldly pleasures, privileges and Christian values. Grace Jotas book inspires you to seek godly wisdom in everything you do in life. Ian Domecillo, Accountant, Australian Securities and Investments Commission As I read through Graces manuscript, I was captured by the well-developed characters. I have ministered with my husband for over thirty years, I have heard the life stories of many families. I know how complex lives can be that are lost in the depths of sin and separation from God. Grace Jota really nailed these characters. Their life story draws you in and just like our God, The Deliverer comes. Kathy Ann DeJoy, Vice President, Miracle Ministries, Inc., Philadelphia Grace Jota tells a riveting story about a love triangle that leads to Gods mercy and deliverance. Grace explains how wealth and fame can come crashing down in her new book. This is a must-read for anyone who values love, family and things that matter most in life. Debbie Cohen, Freelance Reporter, New York The Deliverer evokes a fresh awareness to the ease by which the human spirit can find itself sucked in a whirlpool of contradictions. The author builds an invisible, three-way tension between the two major characters and shifting situations that is masterfully strummed like guitar strings. The reader will sense the unavoidable hand of God that ultimately turns near chaos to liberating deliverance. Pastor Rudy Tan, Senior Pastor, FCF Life Centre, The Church on the Highway, Sydney

Download or read book One Jump Ahead written by Jonathan Schaeffer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-12-16 with total page 571 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It’s hard to believe that it’s been over a decade since One Jump Ahead: Challenging Human Supremacy at Checkers was published. I’m delighted to have the oppor- nity to update and expand the book. The ?rst edition ended on a sad note and that was re?ected in the writing. It is now eleven years later and the project has come to a satisfying conclusion. Since its inception, the checkers project has consumed eighteen years of my life— twenty if you count the pre-CHINOOK and post-solving work. It’s hard for me to believe that I actually stuck with it for that long. My wife, Steph, would probably have something witty to say about my obsessive behavior. Rereading the book after a decade was dif?cult for me. When I originally wrote One Jump Ahead, I vowed to be candid in my telling of the story. That meant being honest about what went right and what went wrong. I have been criticized for being hard on some of the characters. That may be so, but I hope everyone will agree that the person receiving the most criticism was, justi?ably, me. I tried to be balanced in the storytelling, re?ecting things as they really happened and not as some sanitized everyone-lived-happily-ever-after tale.

Download or read book Personal Foul written by Richard Lieberman and published by ChicagoReviewPress + ORM. This book was released on 2005-08-30 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Lieberman reveals a storied football program rife with ethical problems in the hiring of its coaches and the treatment of some of the players themselves.” —Library Journal It was bad enough when popular offensive line coach Joe Moore sued the University of Notre Dame for age discrimination—but matters got much worse when the lawsuit uncovered disquieting evidence of unethical and inappropriate conduct in a football program widely regarded as a model of probity. This is the dramatic story of that explosive lawsuit, which tarnished Notre Dame’s burnished football image. This riveting account begins in November 1996, when Bob Davie is hired as head coach to replace the beloved Lou Holtz. In one of his first, and most fateful, executive decisions, Davie fires sixty-four-year-old Joe Moore because—as Davie puts it—he needs someone younger for the job. Attorney Rick Lieberman takes on Joe Moore’s case and in this absorbing book he describes the trial and the enormous tensions to which litigants like Joe Moore are subject. This is a David and Goliath story in which the Notre Dame attorneys attempt to destroy Joe Moore’s reputation as both a coach and a man. In the process, Davie’s own background comes under close scrutiny as a reporter’s investigation reveals some damning evidence. And as the trial proceeds, Notre Dame’s football program is shown to be rife with legal improprieties and inappropriate behavior involving both coaches and administrators. Anyone interested in sports, in the law, in stories of blatant injustice—and in Notre Dame—will find Personal Foul a fascinating, revealing and memorable read. “A testament to the seedy side of big-money college sports.” —Booklist
