Book I Can Hear You Whisper

Download or read book I Can Hear You Whisper written by Lydia Denworth and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2015-02-24 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A skilled science translator, Denworth makes decibels, teslas and brain plasticity understandable to all.”—Washington Post Lydia Denworth’s third son, Alex, was nearly two when he was identified with significant hearing loss that was likely to get worse. Denworth knew the importance of enrichment to the developing brain but had never contemplated the opposite: deprivation. How would a child’s brain grow outside the world of sound? How would he communicate? Would he learn to read and write? An acclaimed science journalist as well as a mother, Denworth made it her mission to find out, interviewing experts on language development, inventors of groundbreaking technology, Deaf leaders, and neuroscientists at the frontiers of brain plasticity research. I Can Hear You Whisper chronicles Denworth’s search for answers—and her new understanding of Deaf culture and the exquisite relationship between sound, language, and learning.

It started as a vacation of a lifetime. Jennifer Parker is a successful lifestyle YouTuber living in a beautiful home outside Los Angeles with her three children. She recently divorced her husband of eighteen years and dove right into a new relationship despite her children's disapproval. Jennifer's boyfriend, Tyler, is a middle school English teacher and a mama's boy. To prove to Jennifer that he can be as macho as her ex-husband, he presents the idea of going on an off-the-grid vacation in a yurt in Montana. The idea of not having cell phone reception and running water for days doesn't appeal to Jennifer. Yet, she agrees to the trip because she considers this unique retreat an opportunity for her children to connect with her boyfriend. Most of Jennifer's subscribers are excited about following their favorite online vlogger on an adventure in the wilderness, while others see her vacation as the perfect opportunity to get close to her and act out their twisted fantasies. Alone on the mountain, where no one can hear her scream, Jennifer realizes that it wasn't the deep, dark woods she had to fear.

Book excerpt: From one of Korea’s literary stars, a novel about two orphans from the streets of Seoul: one becomes the head of a powerful motorcycle gang, and the other follows him at all costs In South Korea, underground motorcycle gangs attract society’s castoffs. They form groups of hundreds and speed wildly through cities at night. For Jae and Dongyu, two orphans, their motorcycles are a way of survival. Jae is born in a bathroom stall at the Seoul Express Bus Terminal. And Dongyu is born mute—unable to communicate with anyone except Jae. Both boys grow up on the streets of Seoul among runaway teenagers, con men, prostitutes, religious fanatics, and thieves. After years navigating the streets, Jae becomes an icon for uprooted teenagers, bringing an urgent message to them and making his way to the top of the gang. Under his leadership, the group grows more aggressive and violent—and soon becomes the police’s central target. A novel of friendship—worship and betrayal, love and loathing—and a searing portrait of what it means to come of age with nothing to call your own, I Hear Your Voice resonates with mythic power. Here is acclaimed author Young-ha Kim’s most daring novel to date.

Book Where No One Can Hear You Scream

Download or read book Where No One Can Hear You Scream written by Sarah McInerney and published by Gill. This book was released on 2008 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since 1925, a startling number of young women have been found dead in the Dublin-Wicklow Mountains. The small winding roads, the dense foliage and the isolation have combined to make the area a favourite burial ground amongst murderers. A number of women have also disappeared in the vicinity in recent years, and it is widely speculated that they too lie in unmarked graves in the mountains. There are many who believe that at least one serial killer has used the mountains to bury his victims. Starting with the death of prostitute Honor Bright, Where No One Can Hear You Scream examines in detail cases such as the murder in Christmas 1979 of Phyllis Murphy, whose killer John Crerar was convicted over 20 years later after advances in DNA. It also looks at the unsolved murders of Anthoinette Smith in 1987 and Patricia Doherty in 1991. The women's bodies were found within a mile of one another, prompting speculation that they were killed by the same person. In December 1994 a young woman was brutally raped by two men on Powerscourt Mountain. Sarah McInerney examins this horrific case and the trial of the men involved. She also looks at the sexual assault cases involving Philip Colgan, Larry Murphy and Robert Quigley: three dangerous men whose brutal impulses had horrific repercussions for their victims. Once again the common thread linking all these cases is the bleak backdrop of the Wicklow Mountains. With the assistance of the Garda, and the families concerned, Where No One Can Hear You Scream describes these and other cases with compassion and honesty. And through it all, the Dublin-Wicklow Mountains, which have been host to so much violence and horror and death, loom large.

Book Do They Hear You When You Cry

Download or read book Do They Hear You When You Cry written by Fauziya Kassindja and published by Delta. This book was released on 1999-01-12 with total page 543 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For Fauziya Kassindja, an idyllic childhood in Togo, West Africa, sheltered from the tribal practices of polygamy and genital mutilation, ended with her beloved father's sudden death. Forced into an arranged marriage at age seventeen, Fauziya was told to prepare for kakia, the ritual also known as female genital mutilation. It is a ritual no woman can refuse. But Fauziya dared to try. This is her story--told in her own words--of fleeing Africa just hours before the ritual kakia was to take place, of seeking asylum in America only to be locked up in U.S. prisons, and of meeting Layli Miller Bashir, a law student who became Fauziya's friend and advocate during her horrifying sixteen months behind bars. Layli enlisted help from Karen Musalo, an expert in refugee law and acting director of the American University International Human Rights Clinic. In addition to devoting her own considerable efforts to the case, Musalo assembled a team to fight with her on Fauziya's behalf. Ultimately, in a landmark decision in immigration history, Fauziya Kassindja was granted asylum on June 13, 1996. Do They Hear You When You Cry is her unforgettable chronicle of triumph.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Tell Me So I Can Hear You, Eleanor Drago-Severson and Jessica Blum-DeStefano show how education leaders can learn to deliver feedback in a way that strengthens relationships as well as performance and builds the capacity for growth. Drawing on constructive-developmental theory, the authors describe four stages of adult growth and development and explain how to differentiate feedback for colleagues with different “ways of knowing,” which include: • Instrumental knowers, who tend to see things in black and white (“Did I do it right or wrong?”) and may need to develop the capacity for reflection. • Socializing knowers, who are concerned with maintaining relationships (“What do you want me to do?”) and may need support developing their own ideas. • Self-authoring knowers, who have strong ideologies and values (“How does this fit with my goals and vision?”) and may need help with perspective taking. • Self-transformative knowers, who are able to examine issues from multiple points of view (“How can I understand this more deeply?”) and may need guidance in resolving tensions and contradictions. The authors show how leaders can provide feedback in ways that “meet people where they are” while expanding the developmental capacities educators bring to their work. Drago-Severson and Blum-DeStefano provide real-life examples with practical strategies for creating a safe space for feedback, finding the right words, and bridging feedback and action. Tell Me So I Can Hear You offers invaluable guidance to help educators support a culture of learning in classrooms, schools, and districts.
