Book excerpt: When I was a youngster, nothing captured my delight and imagination quite like the anticipation of acquiring and eating a candy bar. I think it's because, not only did I love eating them, but because a pleasure such as that only happened on occasion-it wasn't an everyday occurrence. But wow! I imagined that one day I might be able to buy a candy bar any time I pleased. Could life possibly get any better than that?! But even in my early years of candy-bar delight and gratification, I sensed that the bigger picture of life would be even grander. Someday, I thought, something even better than a candy bar will be the center of life's fulfillment. Even then I sensed that my childhood pleasures would one day transform into more grown-up types of things. I eventually learned, though, that obstacles get in the way of the simple things that bring real joy. Life and how we choose to live it is a serious matter. To take each day lightly and to live it without a central, guiding purpose is not wise. Deep down within our inner being, we want to have great significance and meaning, but we don't know how to attain it. To live a life that really matters-to be someone who makes a real difference in the world-is often beyond our reach unless we are intentional. When we choose to live without vision or mission, we miss out on many "could have been" regrets that plague many of us. Essentially, we often settle for less-far less-than the greatness God created us for.

Book excerpt: “Chocolate peanut butter cups and candy bars are transformed into elegant, sophisticated sweets using the finest chocolate and freshest ingredients.” —The San Diego Union-Tribune The beloved candy bars of childhood have grown up, but there is no need to go to the French Laundry to get your fix. Candy bar devotees Susie Norris and Susan Heeger show how to reinvent candy bars as they should be—thick and layered with nougat, crisp with toffee, and coated with fine chocolate. Familiar candy-store bars and other nostalgic favorites are re-created using the freshest ingredients, right down to the peanut-laden caramel and chocolate-drenched cookie crunch. A mix-and-match flavor chart inspires anyone with a sweet tooth to dream up custom treats of their own, such as covering marshmallows with molten chocolate. From the basics of candy making to tips on dressing up these luscious indulgences as elegant desserts, Hand-Crafted Candy Bars evokes the sweet memory of youth with simple, scrumptious sophistication. “Recipes for everything from Molten Chocolate-Peanut Bars, a Snickers taste-alike, to Candied Mint and Citrus Bark. Those sugar-crisped mint leaves look particularly Halloweenish peeking from the surface.” —The Times Herald “Incorporates their love of candy, natural ingredients and other confections with terrific recipes for the home cook. You can even create your own signature candy bar (look for their suggestions in the mix-and-match flavor chart to get started).” —Dying for Chocolate “Their book is filled with recipes for making ‘grown-up confections’ from home using high-quality fresh ingredients. Far (but not too far) cries from the dollar bars at the corner store.” —Relish

Book Duty Honor and a Loaf of Bread

Download or read book Duty Honor and a Loaf of Bread written by Bill Waldron and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2012 with total page 403 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Like other families, letters were the fabric that held the fledgling Waldron family together during the personally trying, society changing events of World War II. Bill, the town baker, voluntarily became an infantry soldier and platoon scout in Europe and Marge, a new wife, became the town baker - the Waldron's version of Rosie the Riveter. Nothing in their lives had prepared them for these roles yet everything in their lives made them equal to the tasks at hand. Their letters to one another provide an intimate view of an American family triumphing in the face of adversity. Duty, Honor, Faith, Love and Family all play a role and readers will come to love and admire both of them. Bill's letters from the Battle of the Bulge, the Siegfreid Line and through the end of the war across Germany and into Czechoslovakia are particularly interesting. He reveals himself as a down to earth patriot who volunteered for a very dangerous job and excelled - a man with survivor's instincts who avoided illness, frostbite and wounds under extremely difficult circumstances. Historical perspective is provided by sidebars throughout the book which explain matters referred to in the letters as well as what is going on in the war and at home. The sidebars are themselves an education, made immediate and interesting by the personal experiences conveyed in the letters"--Page 4 of cover

Book Beyond Wealth

Download or read book Beyond Wealth written by Alexander Green and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2011-05-03 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It's not all about the money; the key to true riches Leo Tolstoy said, "Nobody knows where the human race is going. The highest wisdom, then, is to know where you are going." Yet many today chase the false rabbits of success: status, luxury, reputation and material possessions. In the quest to "have it all," our lives often lack real meaning and purpose. Beyond Wealth is the antidote. New York Times bestselling author Alexander Green takes things right down to brass tacks: We are here for a short time. Knowledge is limitless. Therefore, the most critical knowledge is not any particular skill but rather wisdom about "how to live." Fortunately, men and women have had several thousand years to think about what it means to live "the good life." And the answers found here, from Plato and Aristotle to Mahatma Gandhi and Stephen Hawking, will both surprise and delight you. Beyond Wealth provides insightful commentary on the most important aspects of our lives: love, work, honor, trust, freedom, death, fear, truth, beauty and other timeless issues. The book is both a thought provoking read and the ideal gift, guaranteed to ennoble, uplift and inspire.
