Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An Instant New York Times Bestseller! A BuzzFeed Best Young Adult Book of 2020 Perfect for fans of The Last Magician and Serpent & Dove, this heart-stopping debut is an imaginative Romeo and Juliet retelling set in 1920s Shanghai, with rival gangs and a monster in the depths of the Huangpu River. The year is 1926, and Shanghai hums to the tune of debauchery. A blood feud between two gangs runs the streets red, leaving the city helpless in the grip of chaos. At the heart of it all is eighteen-year-old Juliette Cai, a former flapper who has returned to assume her role as the proud heir of the Scarlet Gang—a network of criminals far above the law. Their only rivals in power are the White Flowers, who have fought the Scarlets for generations. And behind every move is their heir, Roma Montagov, Juliette’s first love…and first betrayal. But when gangsters on both sides show signs of instability culminating in clawing their own throats out, the people start to whisper. Of a contagion, a madness. Of a monster in the shadows. As the deaths stack up, Juliette and Roma must set their guns—and grudges—aside and work together, for if they can’t stop this mayhem, then there will be no city left for either to rule.

Book excerpt: Chloe, Josh Miller's younger sister, is a free spirit with funky clothes and dramatic hair. She struggles with her own identity, classmates, parents, boys, and -- her biggest question -- whether or not God is for real. But this unconventional high school freshman definitely doesn't hold back when she meets Him in a big, personal way. Refusing to change her image to fit into the "stereotypical Christian preppy mold," Chloe expresses God's love and grace through the girl band she forms, Redemption. In her development as a musician and performer, tender-hearted Chloe will learn tough lessons about following God, her heart, and her dreams.
Download or read book Turning Pointe written by Chloe Angyal and published by Bold Type Books. This book was released on 2021-05-04 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A reckoning with one of our most beloved art forms, whose past and present are shaped by gender, racial, and class inequities—and a look inside the fight for its future Every day, in dance studios all across America, legions of little children line up at the barre to take ballet class. This time in the studio shapes their lives, instilling lessons about gender, power, bodies, and their place in the world both in and outside of dance. In Turning Pointe, journalist Chloe Angyal captures the intense love for ballet that so many dancers feel, while also grappling with its devastating shortcomings: the power imbalance of an art form performed mostly by women, but dominated by men; the impossible standards of beauty and thinness; and the racism that keeps so many people of color out of ballet. As the rigid traditions of ballet grow increasingly out of step with the modern world, a new generation of dancers is confronting these issues head on, in the studio and on stage. For ballet to survive the twenty-first century and forge a path into a more socially just future, this reckoning is essential.
Download or read book Hold Your Fire written by Chloe Wilson and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2024-07-18 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From award-winning Australian author Chloe Wilson comes Hold Your Fire, a debut short story collection that will haunt you long after you turn the page. A steely mother doubts her husband’s guts and her son's capability, until a playground incident dramatically escalates. A young couple move into a house in which there’s been a recent murder, and fall under the spell of their peculiar, commanding neighbours. Two sisters are determined to detoxify themselves into perfection. A diver pushes herself and those around her to dangerous heights. Interspersed with these stories are lightning strikes of flash fiction: we glimpse a leopard in the apartment next door; plants grown out of a strange and miraculous soil; the spirit of a girl who’s been thrown down a well. Needle-sharp, effortlessly surprising and beautifully controlled, Hold Your Fire is a debut collection that introduces a fierce new talent. At each turn, Chloe Wilson offers a unique insight, a tear in the veil of our moral certainties. Her stories strip away the varnish of our decency to reveal the raw, fascinating truth beneath.
Download or read book I ll Tell You in Person written by Chloe Caldwell and published by Coffee House Press. This book was released on 2016-09-12 with total page 125 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Praise for Chloe Caldwell: "I read it a couple of months ago in one can't-put-it-down-even-though-it's-the-middle-of-the-night sitting. It's as intense and interesting and clear-hearted as they come."—Cheryl Strayed "I'll read anything Chloe Caldwell writes. She's a rare bird: fearless, dark, prolific, unpretentious, and truly honest."—Elisa Albert "Nothing's sexier than first love and first intimacies, and Caldwell's brave autobiographical tale twists the trope into a powerful story about unexpectedly falling in love with a woman and the discoveries, sexual and otherwise, that ensue."—Time Out New York "The essays in this collection are as exuberant as they are sad. Her storytelling is as vulnerable as it is bombastic. These essays roll in gangsta, but wear freshly picked daisies in their hair."—Rookie Magazine Flailing in jobs, failing at love, getting addicted and un-addicted to people, food, and drugs—I'll Tell You in Person is a disarmingly frank account of attempts at adulthood and all the less than perfect ways we get there. Caldwell has an unsparing knack for looking within and reporting back what's really there, rather than what she'd like you to see. Chloe Caldwell is the author of the novella Women, and the essay collection Legs Get Led Astray. Her work has appeared in the Sun, Salon, VICE, Hobart, Nylon, the Rumpus, Men's Health, and LENNY, among others. She teaches personal essay and memoir writing in New York City and lives in Hudson.
Download or read book NITE written by Ellen Grant and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2022-02-09 with total page 107 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Children inherit more than eye color, hair color, and height. A parent's secret can give rise to a child's burden. Although a child may become a socially adaptable adult with a family and a six-figure salary, this does not necessarily guarantee everything is all right on the inside. Secrets that are an invitation to dysfunction, mistrust, and, worst of all, rebellion can trail into painful generational bonds. The heart, functioning to sustain and overcome pain, serves as God's instrument to channel his love to us so we can love ourselves and others. When the invitation is extended to sin, decline the offer; do not click maybe or regrets. An invitation does not mean acceptance. Here is your way out. Right now. This second, choose life and blessings so that you and your seed will live, not merely the simple life but an abundant life of overflowing love, joy, peace, and prosperity which Jesus sacrificed and died for you to embrace. Never invite the enemy. The enemy's plan has always been to steal, kill, and destroy, not only you but also your children and their children. The enemy is anyone and anything--whether disguised in makeup, money, or muscles--that distract you from God's perfect plan for your life. The love of the flesh and undisciplined desires can exceed in intensity while the love for God diminishes. An extra slice of cake, an extra dose of meds, or an extra marital affair does not matter--the flesh wants to be fed. The effects linger beyond midnight and morning and will manifest for generations. God is relying on you to stop the cycle of imbalance in your family.

Download or read book The Popular Girls Book Series written by Raven Riley and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2011-07-26 with total page 478 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My book is about three girls who are very mean and rich. They came from different states, and they also run the school. The three popular girls are so very rich and very spoiled to the bone. Each of the three girls have different personalities; they are always expressing their styles of clothes that all 3 of them wear to school everyday. Chloe tries to spend all of her money so she can buy clothes online. She does not get along with her sister Amy. Chloe hates going to school every day; she is mean to a lot of people at that school. Chloe never gets to spend any time with her beau because she is always working and also doing her homework after she gets off from work. The two of them argue a lot. She does not have the perfect family. She is the hottest chick at school. Summer is just the sweetest person that you will ever meet. She does not always yell at people. Her favorite color is yellow. Summer has a sister named Naomi. Let me tell you something else, they never agree on anything with each other you could possibly name of. The two of them would definitely honestly fight about it. Summer used to have a boyfriend named Max, but I am not going to tell you what happened to their past relationship. Kaylee was the more fly chick and a hot, sexy chick. She was not always so sweet for looks can be so deceiving. She can stay mad at anyone for a very long time. It takes her a long time to get over something that made her very angry. I totally forgot where Kaylee lives anyway. Kaylee loves going to school; she is a straight A-student. She loves to party with her friends and drink all night long. Kaylee really does not have a curfew; she can come home anytime. She would never date any guys that have really bad breath. Kaylee’s high school sweetheart is Jake Stanley. The two of them have been dating ever since middle school and now in high school. She fell head over heels for that guy. He rides motorcycles. He is basically the love of her life. Jake and Kaylee do everything together like going out dancing or hanging out with his friends. They make the perfect couple. He makes her laugh and smile. They both make each other happy. What they have is real love, not puppy love. So you need to read to find out what happens to these three girls in my book. It is a very interesting book, You are going to really like it. It is very funny at the same time and very sad too. There are a lot of funny parts in the book that make me laugh.

When an attractive stranger waltzes into her grandfather’s pottery shop, Catherine can’t stop herself from unloading her profound contempt for the festival frenzy and in particular for Jesse Morgan, the main attraction of the event. Much to her dismay, Catherine is gob smacked to discover that the stranger is none other than the boot-scooting singer herself. Jesse Morgan has everything a woman could wish for: an accomplished career, people who love her, and a life full of fun. Too bad the only thing she wants is an irritable, distrustful French woman who seems convinced Jesse is shallow with no morals at all. Can the two find true love in the Colorado wilderness? And even if they do—how can they possibly build a relationship that will last?

Download or read book The Message 100 Devotional Bible written by and published by NavPress. This book was released on 2015-09-24 with total page 3163 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here in The Message 100 is the whole Bible—every single, moving word of it—laid out in 100 readings and arranged to chronologically reflect the unfolding story. Move through it at your own pace, and discover how God may be moving right there on the page, right here in your life. What moves you? Beauty? “God looked over everything he had made; it was so good, so very good!” (Genesis 1) Worry? “It’s wonderful what happens when Christ displaces worry at the center of your life.” (Philippians 4) Injustice? “God was moved to compassion when he heard their groaning.” (Judges 2) Suffering? “Deeply moved, Jesus touched their eyes. They had their sight back that very instant.” (Matthew 20) The Bible tells a story about moving—people moving from place to place, from good times to hard times to good times again. But more than anything, it’s a story of a God who is moved by love, and who moves—and who moves us—to make the world a better place.
