Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charlie Wheelan and his family do what others dream of: They take a year off to travel the world. This is their story. What would happen if you quit your life for a year? In a pre–COVID-19 world, the Wheelan family decided to find out; leaving behind work, school, and even the family dogs to travel the world on a modest budget. Equal parts "how-to" and "how-not-to"—and with an eye toward a world emerging from a pandemic—We Came, We Saw, We Left is the insightful and often hilarious account of one family’s gap-year experiment. Wheelan paints a picture of adventure and connectivity, juggling themes of local politics, global economics, and family dynamics while exploring answers to questions like: How do you sneak out of a Peruvian town that has been barricaded by the local army? And where can you get treatment for a flesh-eating bacteria your daughter picked up two continents ago? From Colombia to Cambodia, We Came, We Saw, We Left chronicles nine months across six continents with three teenagers. What could go wrong?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Leon Labuschagne’s livelihood depends on death. At nineteen, he is a warder on Death Row: a shepherd who cares for the condemned – and a butcher who escorts them to the gallows. After a gruelling two-week stint in which thirty-two men were hanged, Leon loses control, with tragic results. And now he’s the one facing the death penalty. Only the most precarious line of legal argument stands between Leon and the gallows. Chasing a defence, his advocate trawls the deepest recesses of life in the Pot – the twilight world of Death Row. A gripping courtroom drama steeped in the factual, Shepherds & Butchers begins in 1987, a year in which 164 people were executed. Two years later, the last man went to the gallows in Pretoria, after more than four thousand hangings that century. The novel portrays legal execution in unprecedented detail, revealing its devastating impact on all those involved.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When you reach the twilight of your existence, look back on your life and realize you have accomplished all your desires; you have to share your fulfillment with the world, your children, your family, your dearest friends, and everyone who contributed to your well-being. If the saying Practice makes perfect goes, I hope it applies to me. This is my second attempt at writing a book, a sequel to my first one. I do not consider myself a literary writer, far from it. As a matter of fact, in my school years, not only couldnt I put two and two together, but composition was my second weakest subject. As English is not my mother language, its a double challenge. I have many times used dictionaries to prove my point. At an early age, playing with my dolls, I would tell them all kinds of stories, so you can say that I am more of a storyteller. This is my fairy tale as close to the truth as can be told however, to protect the anonymity of the characters, their names have been changed. Enjoy!

Book excerpt: When Ralph arrived at the row house in the South Bronx, he had to step back as his family made their way up the steps. Theystarted to creak as they carried their luggage, and all that went through his mind was that they would collapse if he also climbed those steps. Where he came from, all the steps were made of either marble or granite. How in the world would these wooden stairs hold up? Ralph had been surrounded by the unpolluted blue Mediterranean that reflected the ever present blue sky. If the temperature became too hot, he cooled off in that blue water to his heart’s content. Now, in the bowels of the South Bronx, the only thing that turned blue was his demeanor. His only relief from the stifling summer heat, along with some of the boys from the neighborhood, would be to illegallyopen a fire hydrant when the police were not around.
