Book Wood Wire Wings

Download or read book Wood Wire Wings written by Kirsten W. Larson and published by Thinkingdom. This book was released on 2020-06-23 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This riveting nonfiction picture book biography explores both the failures and successes of self-taught engineer Emma Lilian Todd as she tackles one of the greatest challenges of the early 1900s: designing an airplane. Emma Lilian Todd's mind was always soaring--she loved to solve problems. Lilian tinkered and fiddled with all sorts of objects, turning dreams into useful inventions. As a child, she took apart and reassembled clocks to figure out how they worked. As an adult, typing up patents at the U.S. Patent Office, Lilian built the inventions in her mind, including many designs for flying machines. However, they all seemed too impractical. Lilian knew she could design one that worked. She took inspiration from both nature and her many failures, driving herself to perfect the design that would eventually successfully fly. Illustrator Tracy Subisak's art brings to life author Kirsten W. Larson's story of this little-known but important engineer.

Book excerpt: House of Koi is about identity and learning that, sometimes, your future is waiting for you in your past. The story follows Mila as she strives to reconcile the person she became in an effort to fit into her American international school with the young girl she was; the girl who spoke Mandarin and Malay with ease. Is it too late to embrace both parts of herself? When Mila is sent to the top of the mountain to live with her grandmother for a year when her parents go away for business, she cannot avoid her native tongue, even if she does try. To make matters worse, Mila must now attend a local private school, and navigate a world she seems to barely understand. Everyone keeps telling her that she should not forget her heritage, but this only takes her deeper inside herself. That is until she meets the "Fish Boy" from the bottom of the mountain. Together, they teach one another what the other is best at. However, every time Mila asks about the past, he refuses to answer. She resolves to find out what happened that caused her to be unable to look her grandmother squarely in the eye.

Download or read book Lilian written by Giveon Cornfield and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2012-11 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interesting books are populated by exceptional people. Drama begins when social, political and psychological conditions are out of the ordinary. Nature was in no mood for understatement when she created Lilian Kert Cornfield, whose eventful and near century-long voyage through life would be hard to find between the covers of any novel. Most women want to be loved for what they are, while men seek recognition for what they accomplish. Lilian came to Jerusalem soon after the end of Ottoman rule, where she met and married her sabra husband Gaalya. She broke the mold as a career woman long before that became fashionable. She was a progressive nutritionist, ever innovative, always seeking out what was best in the other person. She refused to take no for an answer: no position she applied for was denied her, and when she decided to learn to drive at age sixty, doggedly repeated the test six times until her license was granted (perhaps it should not have been). Lilian was too busy all her life to pay attention to the clock. Well into her eighties, she swam in the ocean daily, summer and winter. She observed the aging and deaths of her contemporaries with clinical detachment, as if she herself was exempt. She participated actively in the rebuilding of modern Israel, served as a dietician in UNRRA during WWII, and was wounded in an aerial attack on the IDF base where she was working as a volunteer during the War of Independence. Teacher, journalist, author of a dozen best-selling cookbooks, this larger-than-life personality, hailed as "Israel's First Lady of Cuisine," has left a lasting legacy. Cover drawing by L. Shertok, Giv' at Brenner, 1948 Cover design by Marion Cornfield

Redwine, the New York Times bestselling author of The Shadow Queen. Perfect for fans of Graceling and the Lunar Chronicles. The world has turned upside down for Thad and Ari Glavan, the bastard twins of Súndraille’s king. Their mother was murdered. The royal family died mysteriously. And now Thad sits on the throne of a kingdom whose streets are suddenly overrun with violence he can’t stop. Growing up ignored by the nobility, Ari never wanted to be a proper princess. And when Thad suddenly starts training Ari to take his place, she realizes that her brother’s ascension to the throne wasn’t fate. It was the work of a Wish Granter named Alistair Teague who tricked Thad into wishing away both the safety of his people and his soul in exchange for the crown. So Ari recruits the help of Thad’s enigmatic new weapons master, Sebastian Vaughn, to teach her how to fight Teague. With secret ties to Teague’s criminal empire, Sebastian might just hold the key to discovering Alistair’s weaknesses, saving Ari’s brother—and herself. Book excerpt: Lilian, in dark blue office frock with an embroidered red line round the neck and detachable black wristlets that preserved the ends of the sleeves from dust and friction, sat idle at her flat desk in what was called "the small room" at Felix Grig's establishment in Clifford Street, off Bond Street. There were three desks, three typewriting machines and three green-shaded lamps. Only Lilian's lamp was lighted, and she sat alone, with darkness above her chestnut hair and about her, and a circle of radiance below. She was twenty-three. Through the drawn blind of the window could just be discerned the backs of the letters of words painted on the glass: "Felix Grig. Typewriting Office. Open day and night." Seen from the street the legend stood out black and clear against the faintly glowing blind. It was 11 P.M.

Book excerpt: A beautiful young girl, was a typist, though not a contented typist. She yearned after a high, impossible ideal, which involved all the more vulgar luxuries so easily obtainable in exchange for cash. The typewriting office at which she was employed had been started by Felix Grig, a middle-aged man of means, as a hobby for his spinster sister. Miss Grig suspected that Felix was more interested in Lilian than he ought to be ; therefore, she gave Lilian the sack. But this ruse was unsuccessful, for Felix invited Lilian to dine at the expensive restaurant of her dreams and suggested a little trip to the Continent. Lilian accepted with alacrity and off they went. Thereafter, chapters celebrating the delights of prosperous indolence on the Riviera. Unhappily, after a few days of this delicious existence Felix catches a cold and Lilian discovers that she is going to have a baby. Felix's cold becomes pneu- monia ; but pneumonia or not, he gets up, marries Lilian, makes a will leaving her everything, and dies. Lilian, having assisted at the usual ceremonies, returns to England and lives happily or unhappily ever afterwards in Felix's town house. Arnold Bennett (1867-1931) was an English journalist, novelist, and writer. After working as a rent collector and solicitor's clerk, Bennett won a writing contest which convinced him to become a journalist. He later turned to the writing of novels, including his most famous Clayhanger and Anna of the five towns.
