The universally-loved, award-winning host of Sky Sports' Soccer Saturday and Channel 4's Countdown, and author of the bestselling Jelleyman's Thrown a Wobbly, returns with a Jackanory-style, football-flavoured narrative which gathers together the funniest, weirdest, most tragic, most heart-warming, under-the-radar stories of the football season. The book is stuffed to the gunnels with behind-the-scenes revelations, opinions and personal anecdotes from Jeff, and has a strong leaning towards the absurdities of both the highest levels and the grass-roots of the game. From the Macclesfield goalkeeper booked for using a golf tee to take his goal kicks, to the unintelligible ranting and raving of South American dictator chairmen. Let Jeff be your trusted guide through the madness of the football season, and let Jeffanory supply you with a veritable treasure trove of great anecdotes to take to the pub.

Book Angels With Dirty Faces

Download or read book Angels With Dirty Faces written by Gary Clarke and published by Paragon Publishing. This book was released on 2023-02-04 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1938 in the Depression with WWII on the horizon, movie-going audiences were riveted by ‘Angels with Dirty Faces’, the morality tale of a priest trying to stop a gangster from corrupting street kids. Flash forward to 1960s and 1970s Nottingham, England, the home of Robin Hood, where two lads who never met each other until later in life, grew up humbly and with many challenges. They both took paths that, like the gangster in the movie, led them to an extraordinary destiny as world game-changers. What did they decide to do next? Create a series of podcasts that became the basis for a book. Missional Architect, author, educator, podcaster, and Nottingham Forest fan Paul D. Lowe sits down with Nottingham Forest fan, author, sports figure, and former football hooligan Gary ‘Boatsy’ Clarke to compare childhoods, ponder fatherhood, share favourite music (they both jam to Sinatra), and reveal never-before shared secrets…and, of course, to talk football. Lots of it. There are life lessons and bouts of philosophy about the beautiful game of football, and the beautiful game of life. Gary and Paul are joined by a few friends as guest interviewers: Kristin Johnson, Keith Amoss, Mick Garton, Rebecca Wheele, Darryl Claypole, Jason Kehoe, and Andrew Batt. Think of it as a group of friends having a series of intimate chats over a cup of tea and a slice of cake. And along the way, the dirty faces fall away to reveal the angels underneath.

The Language of the Game is a passionate and engaging introduction to soccer's history, tactics, and human drama. He also shows how soccer's global reach makes it an unparalleled theater for nationalism, international conflict, and human interconnectedness, with close attention to both men's and women's soccer. Filled with perceptive insights and stories both legendary and little known, The Language of the Game is a rewarding read for anyone seeking to understand soccer better—newcomers and passionate followers alike.

Download or read book I Wasn t Lucky I Was Blessed written by DeShannon Butler and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2020-10-19 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Are you lucky, or are you blessed? Is there a difference between being lucky and being blessed? Depending on the circumstances, one would suggest the two are very subjective. I believe, when you are blessed, you are giving a divined gift from God. You cannot not be lucky to receive such miraculous gifts. This notion of being blessed has been a life lesson for me. As a child, I always was taught to count my blessing and to always look to progress. Against all odds, I felt a calling on my life. My life experiences have shaped me to be the person I am today. I realized how sports served as a platform for my future success. It is quintessential to say I learned early in life...without being academically eligible, I could not participate in sports. "No one was going to cut me a break because of my learning disability!" More and more, this motivated me to try my best in school. Fasten your seat belt! You are about to embark on a journey of bravery, of struggles, of trials, of defeat, and of triumph. At the conclusion of this book, reflect on your own life and determine, are you lucky or blessed?

Book excerpt: What do you do when your first season as head coach has been a disaster? If you are Arne Viimets, a brilliant but controversial iconoclast who likes to discuss football strategy with his dog, you ignore the advice of your alumni, your coaching staff, and, critically, your athletic director. You bench experienced starters in favour of undersized and unproven back-ups. You put together a team which features a rush end who ritually sprinkles antler ash on his head, an offensive tackle who plays the cello, a running back who listens to lectures by Richard Feynman before games, a rugby player from England who views Canadian football and his teammates with contempt, and a preternaturally gifted receiver whose discipline problems threaten to scuttle everything. And you dress Kevin Willister, who has nothing to offer except heart and attitude. It’s the second season. First and ten.

Book Scoring Points Love and Football in the Age of AIDS

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gary Gerson led an uneventful life growing up Jewish in East Tennessee. This changed when he decided to walk onto the Vanderbilt football team with no prior experience, beginning a lifelong love for the game with four years of exhilaration and heartbreak. After juggling the challenges of infatuation, a bowl game, a major steroid scandal and ultimate dishonor at Vandy, Gerson's journeys brought him close to danger in Africa and India, a brush with the Yeti in the Himalaya, and more football in Amsterdam. When he fell in love with Shelley while teaching at the prestigious Cranbrook Kingswood School in Michigan, his journey for meaning took a sharp turn as she revealed her painful secret. Using his wife's triumphs and challenges as motivation, Gerson stepped back onto the football field at the age of 31 in Canada, scoring points along the way to his final personal victory. This book contains frank discussions about sex, relationships, love, AIDS, and death, but it is appropriate for all ages.

Book Soccer s Neoliberal Pitch

Download or read book Soccer s Neoliberal Pitch written by John M. Sloop and published by University of Alabama Press. This book was released on 2023-05-23 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "American sports agnostics might raise an eyebrow at the idea that soccer represents a staging ground for progressive cultural, social, and political possibility within the United States. It is just another game, after all, in a society where mass-audience spectator sport largely avoids any political stance in other than a generic, corporate-friendly patriotism. But John Sloop picks up on the work of Laurent Dubois and others to see in American soccer-a sport that has achieved immense participation and popularity even as it struggles to establish major league status-a game that permits surprisingly diverse modes of thinking about national identity because of its marginality. As a rhetorician who engages with both critical theory and culture, John Sloop seeks to read soccer as the game intersects with gender, race, sexuality, class, and the logic of neoliberal values. The result of this engagement is a sense of both enormous possibility, and real constraint. If American soccer offers more possibility because of its marginality, looking at how these cultural, social, and political possibilities are closed off or constrained can provide valuable insights into American culture and values. In Soccer's Neoliberal Pitch, Sloop analyzes a host of soccer-adjacent case studies: the equal pay dispute between the US women's national team and the US Soccer Federation, the significance of hooligan literature, the introduction of English soccer to American TV audiences, the strange invisibility of the Mexican soccer league despite its consistent high TV ratings, and the reading of US national teams as "underdogs" despite the nation's quasi-imperial dominance of the Western hemisphere. While there is a growing bookshelf of titles on soccer and a growing number on American soccer, Soccer's Neoliberal Pitch is the first and only book-length analysis of soccer through a rhetorical lens. This book is a model for critical cultural work with sports, with appeal to not only sports studies, but cultural studies, communication, and even gender studies classrooms. It is, independent of its bona fides, an engaging and enjoyable read for the soccer fan and the soccer-curious"--

Book My Father And Other Working Class Football Heroes

Download or read book My Father And Other Working Class Football Heroes written by Gary Imlach and published by Random House. This book was released on 2011-06-30 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: WINNER OF THE WILLIAM HILL SPORTS BOOK OF THE YEAR AWARD A poignant and moving account of the author’s search for the man his father was and the life he led as a well-known footballer, blending the personal and the historical into an unforgettable story Stewart Imlach was an ordinary neighbourhood soccer star of his time. A brilliant winger who thrilled the crowd on Saturdays, then worked alongside them in the off-season; who represented Scotland in the 1958 World Cup and never received a cap for his efforts; who was Man of the Match for Nottingham Forest in the 1959 FA Cup Final, and was rewarded with the standard offer - £20 a week, take it or leave it. Gary Imlach grew up a privileged insider at Goodison Park when Stewart moved into coaching. He knew the highlights of his father's career by heart. But when his dad died he realised they were all he knew. He began to realise, too, that he'd lost the passion for football that his father had passed down to him. In this book he faces his growing alienation from the game he was born into, as he revisits key periods in his father's career to build up a picture of his football life - and through him a whole era. ‘The most emotionally charged and moving sports book I've ever read’ Daily Mail
