Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This gripping narrative is an in-depth study of the valiant men of General John Caldwell’s Union Division during the Gettysburg Campaign. Caldwell’s Division made a desperate stand against a tough and determined Confederate force in farmer George Rose's nearly 20-acre Wheatfield. Ready for harvest, the infamous Wheatfield would change hands nearly six times in the span of two hours of fighting on July 2, becoming a trampled, bloody, no-man's land for thousands of wounded soldiers. Smith examines the lives of the Union soldiers in the ranks—as well as leaders Cross, Kelly, Zook, Brooke, and Caldwell himself. From Colonel Edward Cross’s black bandana, to the famed Irish Brigade's charge on Stoney Hill, to a lone young man from Washington County whose grave is marked in stone nearby, James Smith’s Storming the Wheatfield goes deep into the lives the soldiers, evoking a personal connection with the troops. Smith painstakingly contacted nearly one hundred descendants of Caldwell's soldiers, producing one of the most extensively researched narratives to date.

Book Trust Kids

Download or read book Trust Kids written by carla bergman and published by AK Press. This book was released on 2022-11-01 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Trust Kids! weaves together essays, interviews, poems, and artwork from scholars, activists, and artists about our relationships with children in all areas of our lives. The contributors of Trust Kids! write from different backgrounds, genders, ages, and sexualities and combine past lineages with more recent child-rearing ideas to offer a fresh, inspiring perspective. Many works on parenting and families wind up re-inscribing hierarchies by declaring how kids should be liberated. Trust Kids! insists on youth autonomy, listening to youth, and questioning adult supremacy on every page. At the heart of the book are conversations about all the ways that children can be included, loved, and cared for in more generative, just, and egalitarian ways. Its essays explore the liberatory potential of consent and autonomy in relationships among children, youth, and the adults in their lives. They also trace how oppressive attitudes toward children, far from being “natural” forms of kinship with the youngest members of our families and communities, have identifiable social and historical roots.

Book The Church and the Problem of Divine Hiddenness

Download or read book The Church and the Problem of Divine Hiddenness written by Derek S. King and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-12-30 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a theological, and more specifically ecclesiological, response to the philosophical problem of divine hiddenness. It engages with philosopher J.L. Schellenberg’s argument on hiddenness and sets out a theologically rich and fresh response, drawing on the ecclesiological thought of Gregory of Nyssa. With careful attention to Gregory’s work, the book shows how certain ecclesiological problems and themes are critical to the hiddenness argument. It looks to the gathered church (the church as the body of Christ) and the scattered church (the church as the image of God) for relevance to the hiddenness problem. The volume will be of interest to scholars of theology and philosophy, particularly analytic theologians and philosophers of religion.

Book Addressing Health Disparities Ethnic Inequalities Global Disease and the Imperative for Leadership and Community Action in Public Health

Download or read book Addressing Health Disparities Ethnic Inequalities Global Disease and the Imperative for Leadership and Community Action in Public Health written by Dr. Clarisse T. Mefotso Fall MPH and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2023-06-18 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the past days, the noble profession of public and community health was often looked upon with derision, as the health workers themselves failed to project a professional image and instead appeared as though they were casually engaging in domestic activities. This had the unfortunate consequence of leaving those in the community, families, and patients who interacted with them feeling downcast and gloomy. As an advocate for the field for over twenty-five years, I have had the opportunity to address this issue at numerous forums. However, I am pleased to note that in recent times, the community and public health workers have taken a more proactive approach to health promotion. They now present themselves as sharp, professional, and positive role models, not unlike esteemed educators and scholars. No longer do they appear more dispirited than their clients but rather exude a demeanor that inspires and uplifts those around them.

The volume shares who they are as transnational and mobile women living in the midst of linguistic privilege and marginalization. It is one outcome of a research project and the lived experiences which surround and influence (and were influenced by) it. The author documents how she and her research partners began studying what had drawn them to US TESOL programs, and how English was and is a symbol of power and privilege, a symbol of educational access and a pursuit of equity, yet, at times, is also a symbol of linguistic marginalization.

Book Rereading Monika Maron

  • Author : Deirdre Byrnes
  • Publisher : Peter Lang
  • Release : 2011
  • ISBN : 9783039114221
  • Pages : 212 pages

Download or read book Rereading Monika Maron written by Deirdre Byrnes and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2011 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive analysis of the writing of Monika Maron. Her biography charts a complex relationship with the GDR state, from initial ideological identification to sustained, radical rejection. Situating its reflections on her work against the backdrop of a changing critical landscape, this analysis takes account of the re-contextualisation of her writing necessitated by the collapse of the GDR. The author charts the development of a number of seminal themes in Maron's oeuvre. The search for an authentic form of expression in her earliest texts gave way to a focus on the writing and the rewriting of history. The demise of the political system in 1989 led to an exploration in her work of more intimate themes. Maron's post-Wende writing makes an important East German contribution to debates on memory transmission and generational forgetting. Her most recent novels are concerned with the rupture and the ultimate refashioning of biographies in a post-GDR age. Rereading her texts in a post-Wende light, the author explores the complexity of Maron's relationship with the state from which she emerged and demonstrates how this complexity manifests itself in her writing before and after 1989. This study offers new perspectives on Maron's work and illuminates the significance of her contribution to contemporary German literature.

Book Coming of Age in Iran

Download or read book Coming of Age in Iran written by Manata Hashemi and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2020-05-12 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An inside look at young Iranians navigating poverty and stigma in a time of crisis Crippling sanctions, inflation, and unemployment have increasingly burdened young people in the Islamic Republic of Iran. In Coming of Age in Iran, Manata Hashemi takes us inside the lives of poor Iranian youth, showing how these young men and women face their future prospects. Drawing on first-hand accounts, Hashemi follows their stories, one by one, as they struggle to climb up the proverbial ladder of success. Based on years of ethnographic research among these youth in their homes, workspaces, and places of leisure, Hashemi shows how public judgments can give rise to meaningful changes for some while making it harder for others to escape poverty. Ultimately, Hashemi sheds light on the pressures these young men and women face, showing how many choose to comply with—rather than resist—social norms in their pursuit of status and belonging. Coming of Age in Iran tells the unprecedented story of how Iran’s young and struggling attempt to extend dignity and alleviate misery, illuminating the promises—and limits—of finding one’s place during a time of profound uncertainty.
