Book I Am a Sickle Cell Survivor

Download or read book I Am a Sickle Cell Survivor written by Carol Marriam Mulumba and published by Mulumba. This book was released on 2019-10-27 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Iam a Sickle Cell Survivor, Ten Years and still Counting narrates the raw, straight-from-the-source story of an 18-year-old Sickle Cell survivor recounting her medical journey from frequent hospital visits, multiple absences from school, as well as an almost unconscious pull to be rid of what genetic shackles are holding her back. And all her memories were formed from the innocent cradle of her mind from when she was only a child. At seven years of age when she received the bone marrow and cord blood stem cell transplant. Carol's story before and now 10 years after the procedure is nothing short of an incredible make-over. The innocence but depth of this spell-binding narrative is more than just an eye-opener to the intricate challenges of sickle cell anemia. Her story renders a human face to sickle cell anemia and is the welcome handbook during an encounter with the debilitating and almost always, a fatal disease.

Book excerpt: When asked what my reason for telling this story is, I said I only want to inspire and encourage other people facing the samechallenge, make them live life to the fullest with the people they love. Encourage them to love, laugh, play and share like they were as fit as a fiddle. There's a good that has come out of my experience with sickle-cell anaemia, and that's the privilege to counsel and be a muse of hope to children with the disorder. Nothing beats the joy of earning their parents' trust in this regard. Trust me.So, I thought "why not write my experience, so I can reach a larger audience, and spread this hope?" Why not reach other Sickle Cell Warriors with this one message: the doctor's report doesn't define you. Rather, embracing God's word for your life is, of all things, most important. I am a living witness to this! We are overcomers...we are warriors.... weare survivors!"For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future" (Jeremiah29:11).Furthermore, sickle cell patients are not abnormal people, the illness is not a curse and it is wrong to believe that investing in a child with the disorder is a waste of financial resources. With access to quality care, the symptoms can be controlled and disease complications managed such that sickle cell patients can live normally, even to old age. It is this positive message that I am so happy to share with my fellow survivors and the world: that they, too, can be all they want to be in life. Finally, this book is driven by a deep sense of gratitude for life and is a call of hope to all Sickle Cell Warriors to takethe life they have been given and make the most of it. For as long as there is breath in man, there is a bigger picturealready painted that in which there are no limitations to what can be achieved in between the doctor's visits and frightening episodes that leave you wishing you could do more.Of course, the challenges exist. And, for people like us, our life is rife with them, but everything works out an awesome victory for us, by God himself. Come to think of it? Without these obstacles, we'll never discover our incredible ability tobeat them, and come out dancing still? If God is by your side, you will beat any challenge.

Book Surviving Sickle Cell

Download or read book Surviving Sickle Cell written by Kalysia Johnson and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2020-10-14 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sickle Cell Anemia is a horrible disease to an outsider looking in. However, to me, it is no different than any other life-threatening disease! The only difference is Sickle Cell Anemia does not get the much-needed recognition it truly deserves. People know little or nothing about the disease because it is not seen as important like other well-known diseases are. I personally have an issue with that problem because I have Sickle Cell Anemia, and I have always been a lifelong advocate for it! Sickle Cell Anemia has affected me as well as many of my family members. There are countless other people in the world who also suffer from Sickle Cell Anemia. I decided to write my personal story because living with this disease has been quite a challenging journey for me, from my childhood until my middle-aged years. I have had both some good days and some bad ones, but God has kept me. So, I won’t complain! I feel as if I’ve been on an emotional roller coaster that has taken me on some highs and lows. It seems like I have been on this ride a million times over, and it simply will not stop. Despite experiencing some periodic turbulence, I have still managed to have some great times on this roller coaster ride! Therefore, I can honestly say, “It’s okay! I’m going to ride this ‘til the wheels fall off.” Plus, I know God will never, ever give me or anyone else more than we can handle! I have also learned how to weather the storms over the years. Early on, I lived my life worried every day because I was told that I was going to die at the age of 17. Accordingly, I lived with that expectation until I surpassed that deadline. Ever since then, I have been living my life without the constant fear of dying at such a tender age. Life is precious, and I live each day to the fullest! Sickle Cell Anemia is only a part of me; it is not the total sum of who I am!
