Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Women's Legal Landmarks commemorates the centenary of women's admission in 1919 to the legal profession in the UK and Ireland by identifying key legal landmarks in women's legal history. Over 80 authors write about landmarks that represent a significant achievement or turning point in women's engagement with law and law reform. The landmarks cover a wide range of topics, including matrimonial property, the right to vote, prostitution, surrogacy and assisted reproduction, rape, domestic violence, FGM, equal pay, abortion, image-based sexual abuse, and the ordination of women bishops, as well as the life stories of women who were the first to undertake key legal roles and positions. Together the landmarks offer a scholarly intervention in the recovery of women's lost history and in the development of methodology of feminist legal history as well as a demonstration of women's agency and activism in the achievement of law reform and justice.

Book The Haskins Society Journal 26

Download or read book The Haskins Society Journal 26 written by Laura L. Gathagan and published by Boydell & Brewer. This book was released on 2015-10-15 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essays here consider a broad range of topics focused around the early to central Middle Ages. These include a fascinating glimpse of the controversy surrounding Theodoric of Ostrogoth's identity as a builder king; evidence of Byzantine slavery that emerges from a ninth-century Frankish exegetical tract; conciliar prohibitions against interfaith dining; and a fresh look at the doomed Danish marriage of Philip II of France. The Journal's commitment to source analysis is continued with chapters examining female authority on the coins of Henry the Lion; the use and meaning of monastic depredation lists; and the relationship between Henry of Huntingdon and Robert of Torigni. In this issue, Wales provides a particular focus, with considerations of the use and manipulation of English annalistic sources by Welsh chroniclers, a close reading of the Brut y Tywysogion, and a survey of the dynamic interactions and the sometimes unexpected political frameworks of Welsh and Anglo-Saxon kings. Contributors: Shane Bobrycki, Gregory I. Halfond, Thomas Heeboll-Hom, Georgia Henley, Jitske Jasperse, Simon Keynes, Cristina La Rocca, Corinna Matlis, Benjamin Pohl, Thomas Roche, Owain Wyn Jones

Book Music in Welsh Culture Before 1650

Download or read book Music in Welsh Culture Before 1650 written by Sally Harper and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Music in Wales has long been a neglected area. Scholars have been deterred both by the need for a knowledge of the Welsh language, and by the fact that an oral tradition in Wales persisted far later than in other parts of Britain, resulting in a limited number of sources with conventional notation. Sally Harper provides the first serious study of Welsh music before 1650 and draws on a wide range of sources in Welsh, Latin and English to illuminate early musical practice. This book challenges and refutes two widely held assumptions - that music in Wales before 1650 is impoverished and elusive, and that the extant sources are too obscure and fragmentary to warrant serious study. Harper demonstrates that there is a far wider body of source material than is generally realized, comprising liturgical manuscripts, archival materials, chronicles and retrospective histories, inventories of pieces and players, vernacular poetry and treatises. This book examines three principal areas: the unique tradition of cerdd dant (literally 'the music of the string') for harp and crwth; the Latin liturgy in Wales and its embellishment, and 'Anglicised' sacred and secular materials from c.1580, which show Welsh music mirroring English practice. Taken together, the primary material presented in this book bears witness to a flourishing and distinctive musical tradition of considerable cultural significance, aspects of which have an important impact on wider musical practice beyond Wales.

Book Authority and Subjugation in Writing of Medieval Wales

Download or read book Authority and Subjugation in Writing of Medieval Wales written by R. Kennedy and published by Springer. This book was released on 2008-09-15 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The conquest of Wales by the medieval English throne produced a fiercely contested territory, both militarily and culturally. Wales was left fissured by frontiers of language, jurisdiction and loyalty - a reluctant meeting place of literary traditions and political cultures. But the profound consequences of this first colonial adventure on the development of medieval English culture have been disregarded. In setting English figurations of Wales against the contrasted representations of the Welsh language tradition, this volume seeks to reverse this neglect, insisting on the crucial importance of the English experience in Wales for any understanding of the literary cultures of medieval England and medieval Britain.
