This book was released on 2017-11-25 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lead Poisoning in the Smelting and Refining of Lead The last 15 or 20 years have seen great changes in the lead smelt ing industry of the United States. As transportation has improved, small and poorly equipped smelters 1 which had been built near the deposits of ore have been abandoned and the tendency has been to concentrate the work of smelting and refining in a few large plants, for it has proved cheaper to ship the ore to large centers where labor is abundant, than to do the smelting in the mining districts. For the same reason, several articles from the Transactions of the American Institute of Mining Engineers have been incorporated, permission to republish them in this way having been courteously granted by the Secretary of the Institute. Certain of the other articles comprised in this book are abstracts of papers originally presented before engineering societies, or published in other technical periodicals, subsequently republished in the Engineering and Mining Journal, as to which proper acknowledgment has been made in all cases. Download or read book Control of Sulfur Oxide Emissions in Copper Lead and Zinc Smelting written by United States. Bureau of Mines and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Air pollution control regulation$ already implemented or being considered for implementation require substantial investment of capital to remove the sulfur oxides from copper, lead, and zinc smelter gases. There will be an attendant increase in production costs and possibly an associated increase in the price of these metals to the consumer. The total investment and any resultant metal price increase will depend upon the control regulations that ultimately will be adopted by the individual States. Controversy has arisen between the metals industry and governmental control agencies regarding the status of stack gas desulfurization technology and the ability of industry to control sulfur oxide emissions to the degree proposed by some of the more stringent regulations currently under consideration. This paper evaluates the problems involved in achieving various degrees of control over smelter sulfur oxide emissions and the technology available to accomplish the task of assuring clean air. The estimated cost of compliance is reviewed for the copper, zinc, and lead industries, but principal at tent ion is given to the copper situation
