Without aiming at completeness, the topics selected cover all the major questions concerning hyponormal operators. Our main purpose is to provide the reader with a straightforward access to an active field of research which is strongly related to the spectral and perturbation theories of Hilbert space operators, singular integral equations and scattering theory. We have in view an audience composed especially of experts in operator theory or integral equations, mathematical physicists and graduate students. The book is intended as a reference for the basic results on hyponormal operators, but has the structure of a textbook. Parts of it can also be used as a second year graduate course. As prerequisites the reader is supposed to be acquainted with the basic principles of functional analysis and operator theory as covered for instance by Reed and Simon [1]. A t several stages of preparation of the manuscript we were pleased to benefit from proper comments made by our cOlleagues: Grigore Arsene, Tiberiu Constantinescu, Raul Curto, Jan Janas, Bebe Prunaru, Florin Radulescu, Khrysztof Rudol, Konrad Schmudgen, Florian-Horia Vasilescu. Book excerpt: Paul Richard Halmos, who lived a life of unbounded devotion to mathematics and to the mathematical community, died at the age of 90 on October 2, 2006. This volume is a memorial to Paul by operator theorists he inspired. Paul’sinitial research,beginning with his 1938Ph.D. thesis at the University of Illinois under Joseph Doob, was in probability, ergodic theory, and measure theory. A shift occurred in the 1950s when Paul’s interest in foundations led him to invent a subject he termed algebraic logic, resulting in a succession of papers on that subject appearing between 1954 and 1961, and the book Algebraic Logic, published in 1962. Paul’s ?rst two papers in pure operator theory appeared in 1950. After 1960 Paul’s research focused on Hilbert space operators, a subject he viewed as enc- passing ?nite-dimensional linear algebra. Beyond his research, Paul contributed to mathematics and to its community in manifold ways: as a renowned expositor, as an innovative teacher, as a tireless editor, and through unstinting service to the American Mathematical Society and to the Mathematical Association of America. Much of Paul’s in?uence ?owed at a personal level. Paul had a genuine, uncalculating interest in people; he developed an enormous number of friendships over the years, both with mathematicians and with nonmathematicians. Many of his mathematical friends, including the editors ofthisvolume,whileabsorbingabundantquantitiesofmathematicsatPaul’sknee, learned from his advice and his example what it means to be a mathematician.

Operators in question are to be considered as a generalization of classical weighted shifts, on the one hand, and of weighted adjacency operators, on the other; they are called weighted shifts on directed trees. The basic properties of such operators, including closedness, adjoints, polar decomposition and moduli are studied. Circularity and the Fredholmness of weighted shifts on directed trees are discussed. The relationships between domains of a weighted shift on a directed tree and its adjoint are described. Hyponormality, cohyponormality, subnormality and complete hyperexpansivity of such operators are entirely characterized in terms of their weights. Related questions that arose during the study of the topic are solved as well.

The progress in the last several years grew out of applying the results of rational approximation." from the Preface. This book is the successor to the author's 1981 book on the same subject. In addition to reflecting the great strides in the development of subnormal operator theory since the first book, the present work is oriented towards rational functions rather than polynomials. Although the book is a research monograph, it has many of the traits of a textbook including exercises. The book requires background in function theory and functional analysis, but is otherwise fairly self-contained. The first few chapters cover the basics about subnormal operator theory and present a study of analytic functions on the unit disk. Other topics included are: some results on hypernormal operators, an exposition of rational approximation interspersed with applications to operator theory, a study of weak-star rational approximation, a set of results that can be termed structure theorems for subnormal operators, and a proof that analytic bounded point evaluations exist.

An exponential transform, essentially a Riesz potential at critical exponent, is at the heart of this novel framework; its best rational approximants unveil a new class of complex orthogonal polynomials whose asymptotic distribution of zeros is thoroughly studied in the text. Connections with areas of potential theory, approximation theory in the complex domain and fluid mechanics are established. Book excerpt: In this paper, the authors study matrix functions of bounded type from the viewpoint of describing an interplay between function theory and operator theory. They first establish a criterion on the coprime-ness of two singular inner functions and obtain several properties of the Douglas-Shapiro-Shields factorizations of matrix functions of bounded type. They propose a new notion of tensored-scalar singularity, and then answer questions on Hankel operators with matrix-valued bounded type symbols. They also examine an interpolation problem related to a certain functional equation on matrix functions of bounded type; this can be seen as an extension of the classical Hermite-Fejér Interpolation Problem for matrix rational functions. The authors then extend the H∞-functional calculus to an H∞¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯+H∞-functional calculus for the compressions of the shift. Next, the authors consider the subnormality of Toeplitz operators with matrix-valued bounded type symbols and, in particular, the matrix-valued version of Halmos's Problem 5 and then establish a matrix-valued version of Abrahamse's Theorem. They also solve a subnormal Toeplitz completion problem of 2×2 partial block Toeplitz matrices. Further, they establish a characterization of hyponormal Toeplitz pairs with matrix-valued bounded type symbols and then derive rank formulae for the self-commutators of hyponormal Toeplitz pairs.
