Download or read book Heisenberg Calculus and Spectral Theory of Hypoelliptic Operators on Heisenberg Manifolds written by Raphael Ponge and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2008 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This memoir deals with the hypoelliptic calculus on Heisenberg manifolds, including CR and contact manifolds. In this context the main differential operators at stake include the Hormander's sum of squares, the Kohn Laplacian, the horizontal sublaplacian, the CR conformal operators of Gover-Graham and the contact Laplacian. These operators cannot be elliptic and the relevant pseudodifferential calculus to study them is provided by the Heisenberg calculus of Beals-Greiner andTaylor.

Book Hypoelliptic Estimates and Spectral Theory for Fokker Planck Operators and Witten Laplacians

Download or read book Hypoelliptic Estimates and Spectral Theory for Fokker Planck Operators and Witten Laplacians written by Francis Nier and published by Springer. This book was released on 2005-01-17 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There has recently been a renewal of interest in Fokker-Planck operators, motivated by problems in statistical physics, in kinetic equations, and differential geometry. Compared to more standard problems in the spectral theory of partial differential operators, those operators are not self-adjoint and only hypoelliptic. The aim of the analysis is to give, as generally as possible, an accurate qualitative and quantitative description of the exponential return to the thermodynamical equilibrium. While exploring and improving recent results in this direction, this volume proposes a review of known techniques on: the hypoellipticity of polynomial of vector fields and its global counterpart, the global Weyl-Hörmander pseudo-differential calculus, the spectral theory of non-self-adjoint operators, the semi-classical analysis of Schrödinger-type operators, the Witten complexes, and the Morse inequalities.

Book Hypoelliptic Laplacian and Orbital Integrals

Download or read book Hypoelliptic Laplacian and Orbital Integrals written by Jean-Michel Bismut and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2011-08-08 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book uses the hypoelliptic Laplacian to evaluate semisimple orbital integrals in a formalism that unifies index theory and the trace formula. The hypoelliptic Laplacian is a family of operators that is supposed to interpolate between the ordinary Laplacian and the geodesic flow. It is essentially the weighted sum of a harmonic oscillator along the fiber of the tangent bundle, and of the generator of the geodesic flow. In this book, semisimple orbital integrals associated with the heat kernel of the Casimir operator are shown to be invariant under a suitable hypoelliptic deformation, which is constructed using the Dirac operator of Kostant. Their explicit evaluation is obtained by localization on geodesics in the symmetric space, in a formula closely related to the Atiyah-Bott fixed point formulas. Orbital integrals associated with the wave kernel are also computed. Estimates on the hypoelliptic heat kernel play a key role in the proofs, and are obtained by combining analytic, geometric, and probabilistic techniques. Analytic techniques emphasize the wavelike aspects of the hypoelliptic heat kernel, while geometrical considerations are needed to obtain proper control of the hypoelliptic heat kernel, especially in the localization process near the geodesics. Probabilistic techniques are especially relevant, because underlying the hypoelliptic deformation is a deformation of dynamical systems on the symmetric space, which interpolates between Brownian motion and the geodesic flow. The Malliavin calculus is used at critical stages of the proof.

Book The Hypoelliptic Laplacian and Ray Singer Metrics AM 167

Download or read book The Hypoelliptic Laplacian and Ray Singer Metrics AM 167 written by Jean-Michel Bismut and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2008-09-07 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the analytic foundations to the theory of the hypoelliptic Laplacian. The hypoelliptic Laplacian, a second-order operator acting on the cotangent bundle of a compact manifold, is supposed to interpolate between the classical Laplacian and the geodesic flow. Jean-Michel Bismut and Gilles Lebeau establish the basic functional analytic properties of this operator, which is also studied from the perspective of local index theory and analytic torsion. The book shows that the hypoelliptic Laplacian provides a geometric version of the Fokker-Planck equations. The authors give the proper functional analytic setting in order to study this operator and develop a pseudodifferential calculus, which provides estimates on the hypoelliptic Laplacian's resolvent. When the deformation parameter tends to zero, the hypoelliptic Laplacian converges to the standard Hodge Laplacian of the base by a collapsing argument in which the fibers of the cotangent bundle collapse to a point. For the local index theory, small time asymptotics for the supertrace of the associated heat kernel are obtained. The Ray-Singer analytic torsion of the hypoelliptic Laplacian as well as the associated Ray-Singer metrics on the determinant of the cohomology are studied in an equivariant setting, resulting in a key comparison formula between the elliptic and hypoelliptic analytic torsions.

The book aims to unify the relationships between PDEs, nonholonomic geometry, and stochastic processes, focusing on a specific condition shared by these areas known as the bracket-generating condition or Hörmander's condition. The main objectives of the book are:The intended audience for this book includes researchers and practitioners in mathematics, physics, and engineering, who are interested in stochastic techniques applied to geometry and PDEs, as well as their applications in mathematical finance and electrical circuits.

Book Floquet Theory for Partial Differential Equations

Download or read book Floquet Theory for Partial Differential Equations written by P.A. Kuchment and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1993-07-01 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Linear differential equations with periodic coefficients constitute a well developed part of the theory of ordinary differential equations [17, 94, 156, 177, 178, 272, 389]. They arise in many physical and technical applications [177, 178, 272]. A new wave of interest in this subject has been stimulated during the last two decades by the development of the inverse scattering method for integration of nonlinear differential equations. This has led to significant progress in this traditional area [27, 71, 72, 111 119, 250, 276, 277, 284, 286, 287, 312, 313, 337, 349, 354, 392, 393, 403, 404]. At the same time, many theoretical and applied problems lead to periodic partial differential equations. We can mention, for instance, quantum mechanics [14, 18, 40, 54, 60, 91, 92, 107, 123, 157-160, 192, 193, 204, 315, 367, 412, 414, 415, 417], hydrodynamics [179, 180], elasticity theory [395], the theory of guided waves [87-89, 208, 300], homogenization theory [29, 41, 348], direct and inverse scattering [175, 206, 216, 314, 388, 406-408], parametric resonance theory [122, 178], and spectral theory and spectral geometry [103 105, 381, 382, 389]. There is a sjgnificant distinction between the cases of ordinary and partial differential periodic equations. The main tool of the theory of periodic ordinary differential equations is the so-called Floquet theory [17, 94, 120, 156, 177, 267, 272, 389]. Its central result is the following theorem (sometimes called Floquet-Lyapunov theorem) [120, 267].

Book Pseudo Differential Operators Singularities Applications

Download or read book Pseudo Differential Operators Singularities Applications written by Iouri Egorov and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book grew out of lecture notes based on the DMV seminar "Pseudo- Differential Operators, Singularities, Applications" held by the authors in Reisenburg-Günzburg, 12–19 July 1992. The modern theory of elliptic boundary value problems in domains having conical or edge singularities on the boundary as well as the classical theory of elliptic boundary value problems and the original Kondratiev theory are presented. This material forms the foundation for the second part of the book which contains a new construction of pseudo-differential operators with symbols corresponding to the singularities of the boundary of different dimensions. This allows in particular to obtain complete asymptotic expansions of solutions near these singularities.
