Book Hypervelocity Gouging Impacts

Download or read book Hypervelocity Gouging Impacts written by John D. Cinnamon and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When materials interact at hypervelocity (on the order of Mach 8.5 and above) unexpected results can occur. This book addresses the effects of hypervelocity impact, summarizing past and present research efforts as well as setting out the theoretical foundation for understanding material interactions at such velocity. It focuses on research conducted at the Holloman Air Force Base High Speed Test Track (HHSTT), which is working toward a test vehicle speed above Mach 10. Researchers have found that as the sled's speed has increased to Mach 8.5, a material interaction has developed that causes "gouging" in the rails and the sled's "shoes", which can lead to catastrophic failure. The author evaluates the HHSTT gouging phenomenon and offers recommendations to mitigate the occurrence of hypervelocity gouging. His insights and recommendations will also find wide applicability in other areas, such as railguns, orbital debris, and weapon design--

Book The Investigation of Hypervelocity Gouging

Download or read book The Investigation of Hypervelocity Gouging written by David J. Laird and published by . This book was released on 2002-03 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The slipper/rail interface of a hypervelocity rocket sled is subject to immense forces due to dynamic loads and impact of the slipper with the rail, and tremendous heating due to aerodynamic and frictional effects is produced at the interface. Under these severe loading conditions, the material in the rail will sometimes experience large non-linear deformations known as gouging. Hydrocodes are computational solvers designed to handle such non-linear, large deformation, high shock, hydrodynamic applications. The ability of the hydrocode CTH to handle gouge modeling is considered, as well as the manner in which temperature environments affect deformation and plastic strain. The solution techniques and material modeling are described. Using this numerical analysis tool, a study of how gouging occurs and tracing of its development at various impact velocities was undertaken, with emphasis on the effect of shock wave distribution. Modeling the intense aerodynamic and frictional heating near the contact region, the effects of temperature on gouge initiation were evaluated through the application of several thermal environment scenarios that have been developed. The effects of friction, slipper geometry, slipper velocity, and impact method have been considered. Finally, the differences between three- dimensional and two-dimensional analysis considering gouging have been evaluated.

Book The Physical Understanding of the Use of Coatings to Mitigate Hypervelocity Gouging Considering Real Test Sled Dimensions

Download or read book The Physical Understanding of the Use of Coatings to Mitigate Hypervelocity Gouging Considering Real Test Sled Dimensions written by Andrew G. Szmerekovsky and published by . This book was released on 2004-09 with total page 447 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A dimensional analysis with accompanying numerical investigation is conducted. A simplified model of the real test sled is created that allows test sled dimensions to be converted to a numerical model for analysis. The dimensional analysis is used as a means of directly applying the numerical results to real test sled conditions. Similarity principles are studied and tested by comparing the results from scaled numerical models. Strain rate and other time dependent parameters are not scaled, but the effect of these parameters may be quantified and studied further. The dimensional analysis also provides a comprehensive approach to the test sled system by providing parameters whose affect on the final solution may be studied and quantified. The scaling parameters may also be used to determine which quantities must be modified so that results apply. Time and length scales for studying the problem are also determined using the dimensional analysis process. The use of coatings in mitigating damage to materials under high energy impact is also studied. The research is directed toward a scientific approach in determining the potential advantage of specific coatings acting under shock loading conditions and understanding the physics behind these advantages. Friction and heat generation effects are considered for rails with and without a coating.

Download or read book Impactful Times written by James R. Asay and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-05-02 with total page 676 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a history of shock compression science, including development of experimental, material modeling, and hydrodynamics code technologies over the past six decades at Sandia National Laboratories. The book is organized into a discussion of major accomplishments by decade with over 900 references, followed by a unique collection of 45 personal recollections detailing the trials, tribulations, and successes of building a world-class organization in the field. It explains some of the challenges researchers faced and the gratification they experienced when a discovery was made. Several visionary researchers made pioneering advances that integrated these three technologies into a cohesive capability to solve complex scientific and engineering problems. What approaches worked, which ones did not, and the applications of the research are described. Notable applications include the turret explosion aboard the USS Iowa and the Shoemaker-Levy comet impact on Jupiter. The personal anecdotes and recollections make for a fascinating account of building a world-renowned capability from meager beginnings. This book will be inspiring to the expert, the non expert, and the early-career scientist. Undergraduate and graduate students in science and engineering who are contemplating different fields of study should find it especially compelling.

Book High Pressure Shock Compression of Solids

Download or read book High Pressure Shock Compression of Solids written by J.R. Asay and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 399 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a set of basic understandings of the behavior and response of solids to propagating shock waves. The propagation of shock waves in a solid body is accompanied by large compressions, decompression, and shear. Thus, the shear strength of solids and any inelastic response due to shock wave propagation is of the utmost importance. Furthermore, shock compres sion of solids is always accompanied by heating, and the rise of local tempera ture which may be due to both compression and dissipation. For many solids, under a certain range of impact pressures, a two-wave structure arises such that the first wave, called the elastic prescursor, travels with the speed of sound; and the second wave, called a plastic shock wave, travels at a slower speed. Shock-wave loading of solids is normally accomplished by either projectile impact, such as produced by guns or by explosives. The shock heating and compression of solids covers a wide range of temperatures and densities. For example, the temperature may be as high as a few electron volts (1 eV = 11,500 K) for very strong shocks and the densification may be as high as four times the normal density.
