Book A Population Based Policy and Systems Change Approach to Prevent and Control Hypertension

Download or read book A Population Based Policy and Systems Change Approach to Prevent and Control Hypertension written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2010-08-13 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hypertension is one of the leading causes of death in the United States, affecting nearly one in three Americans. It is prevalent in adults and endemic in the older adult population. Hypertension is a major contributor to cardiovascular morbidity and disability. Although there is a simple test to diagnose hypertension and relatively inexpensive drugs to treat it, the disease is often undiagnosed and uncontrolled. A Population-Based Policy and Systems Change Approach to the Prevention and Control Hypertension identifies a small set of high-priority areas in which public health officials can focus their efforts to accelerate progress in hypertension reduction and control. It offers several recommendations that embody a population-based approach grounded in the principles of measurement, system change, and accountability. The recommendations are designed to shift current hypertension reduction strategies from an individual-based approach to a population-based approach. They are also designed to improve the quality of care provided to individuals with hypertension and to strengthen the Center for Disease Control and Prevention's leadership in seeking a reduction in the sodium intake in the American diet to meet dietary guidelines. The book is an important resource for federal public health officials and organizations, especially the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, as well as medical professionals and community health workers.

These two common co-morbidities lead to substantial increase in cardiovascular disease, the major cause of morbidity and mortality of adults around the world. In Diabetes and Hypertension: Evaluation and Management, a panel of renowned experts address a range of critical topics -- from basic concepts in evaluation and management of diabetes and hypertension, such as dietary interventions, to evaluation and management of secondary hypertension in clinical practice. Other chapters focus on high cardiovascular risk populations such as those with coronary heart disease, chronic kidney disease and minority patients. In addition, evolving concepts and new developments in the field are presented in other chapters, such as prevention of type 2 diabetes and the epidemic of sleep apnea and its implication for diabetes and hypertension evaluation and management. An important title covering two of the most troubling disorders of our time, Diabetes and Hypertension: Evaluation and Management will provide the busy practitioner with cutting edge knowledge in the field as well as practical information that can translate into better care provided to the high-risk population of diabetics and hypertensive patients.

Book Knowledge and Awareness of Hypertension in Ghana Management of Hypertension

Download or read book Knowledge and Awareness of Hypertension in Ghana Management of Hypertension written by Michael Oppong Yeboah and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2021-02-02 with total page 107 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2020 in the subject Health - Health Sciences - Health education, , course: MASTER OF PUBLIC HEALTH, language: English, abstract: This study aims to assess the knowledge and awareness of hypertension among people in Ghana. A descriptive cross-sectional survey was used to carry out the study. A total of 408 participants were recruited from the municipality. The instrument used for data collection was a structured questionnaire, which assessed their awareness-level and knowledge-level on hypertension. The Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) was used for the analysis of data. With a total of 408 who participated in the study, 48.3 % were female and 51.7 % were male. Hypertension awareness was around 89 % among the participants. There was a significant level of awareness on hypertension among the respondents from the hypothesis t-valve (0.994) and p-valve (0.044). Most of the participants were able to determine BP 120/80 mm Hg as the average blood pressure and BP > 140/90 mm Hg as hypertension, respectively. When it comes to management option, 60 % preferred an orthodox treatment and 44 % knew stroke as a risk factor of hypertension. Though the majority of the participants were educated and more than half were not able to mention drugs as a way to manage hypertension. In general, the knowledge and awareness-level of hypertension was good. Nevertheless, more research needs to be done to further explore this. The spike in incidence of adult related hypertension is now among one of the most significant public health problems globally. Prevention of hypertension-related complications can be achieved when individuals become aware of the condition and have knowledge on the importance of control of their blood pressure.

Book Home Blood Pressure Monitoring

Download or read book Home Blood Pressure Monitoring written by George S. Stergiou and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-10-31 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hypertension remains a leading cause of disability and death worldwide. Self-monitoring of blood pressure by patients at home is currently recommended as a valuable tool for the diagnosis and management of hypertension. Unfortunately, in clinical practice, home blood pressure monitoring is often inadequately implemented, mostly due to the use of inaccurate devices and inappropriate methodologies. Thus, the potential of the method to improve the management of hypertension and cardiovascular disease prevention has not yet been exhausted. This volume presents the available evidence on home blood pressure monitoring, discusses its strengths and limitations, and presents strategies for its optimal implementation in clinical practice. Written by distinguished international experts, it offers a complete source of information and guide for practitioners and researchers dealing with the management of hypertension.

Book Textbook of Vascular Medicine

Download or read book Textbook of Vascular Medicine written by Rhian M. Touyz and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-08-02 with total page 503 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook focuses on the vascular biology and physiology that underlie vascular disorders in clinical medicine. Vascular biomedicine is a rapidly growing field as new molecular mechanisms of vascular health and disease are unraveled. Many of the major cardiovascular diseases including coronary artery disease, heart failure, stroke and vascular dementia are diseases of the vasculature. In addition vascular injury underpins conditions like kidney failure and cardiovascular complications of diabetes. This field is truly multidisciplinary involving scientists in many domains such as molecular and vascular biology, cardiovascular physiology and pharmacology and immunology and inflammation. Clinically, specialists across multiple disciplines are involved in the management of patients with vascular disorders, including cardiologists, nephrologists, endocrinologists, neurologists and vascular surgeons. This book covers a wide range of topics and provides an overview of the discipline of vascular biomedicine without aiming at in-depth reviews, but rather offering up-to-date knowledge organized in concise and structured chapters, with key points and pertinent references. The structure of the content provides an integrative and translational approach from basic science (e.g. stem cells) to clinical medicine (e.g. cardiovascular disease). The content of this book is targeted to those who are new in the field of vascular biology and vascular medicine and is ideal for medical students, graduate and postgraduate students, clinical fellows and academic clinicians with an interest in the vascular biology and physiology of cardiovascular disease and related pathologies.
