Book Basics of Aerothermodynamics

Download or read book Basics of Aerothermodynamics written by Ernst Heinrich Hirschel and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-01-06 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This successful book gives an introduction to the basics of aerothermodynamics, as applied in particular to winged re-entry vehicles and airbreathing hypersonic cruise and acceleration vehicles. The book gives a review of the issues of transport of momentum, energy and mass, real-gas effects as well as inviscid and viscous flow phenomena. In this second, revised edition the chapters with the classical topics of aerothermodynamics more or less were left untouched. The access to some single topics of practical interest was improved. Auxiliary chapters were put into an appendix. The recent successful flights of the X-43A and the X-51A indicate that the dawn of sustained airbreathing hypersonic flight now has arrived. This proves that the original approach of the book to put emphasis on viscous effects and the aerothermodynamics of radiation-cooled vehicle surfaces was timely. This second, revised edition even more accentuates these topics. A new, additional chapter treats examples of viscous thermal surface effects. Partly only very recently obtained experimental and numerical results show the complexity of such phenomena (dependence of boundary-layer stability, skin friction, boundary-layer thicknesses, and separation on the thermal state of the surface) and their importance for airbreathing hypersonic flight vehicles, but also for any other kind of hypersonic vehicle.

Book A Study of Flow Separation in Regions of Shock Wave boundary Layer Interaction in Hypersonic Flow

Download or read book A Study of Flow Separation in Regions of Shock Wave boundary Layer Interaction in Hypersonic Flow written by Michael S. Holden and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes a theoretical and experimental investigation of the properties of attached and separated regions of shock wave-laminar boundary layer interacting in the strong interaction regime. The flow is studied over a flat plate-wedge compression surface in the high Mach number, low Reynolds number regime where the interaction between the viscous and inviscid regions over the basic flat plate is strong and of fundamental importance to the problem. The theoretical analysis treats the development of the viscous layer and its interaction with the external inviscid stream, using an integral representation for the boundary layer equations. A complementary experimental study investigated the flow over a flat plate-wedge compression surface for a range of free-stream Reynolds number and Mach number conditions in the strong interaction regime.

Book Viscous Interactions at Hypersonic Speed

Download or read book Viscous Interactions at Hypersonic Speed written by Michael S. Holden and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work has been directed toward investigations of fundamental aerothermal phenomena in hypersonic flow, with particular emphasis on viscous/inviscid interaction phenomena. The experimental studies were conducted to examine the changes in the structure at the base of a hypersonic turbulent boundary layer as it is subjected to a strong self induced pressure gradient in regions of shock wave/boundary layer interaction. The initial phase of the theoretical program was directed toward summarizing existing techniques for obtaining Navier/Stokes solutions for laminar flow over flat plates in hypersonic flow. In the experimental program, surface and flow field measurements were made to examine the detailed flow mechanics associated with turbulent boundary layer separation over a large cone flare model at Mach 11, 13, and 16 for Reynold numbers up to 100 million. Solutions have been obtained to Navier-Stokes equations for the laminar flow over the leading edge of a sharp flat plate in Mach 16 flow for highly cooled wall conditions using a modified MacCormack/Shang fully explicit formulation. To obtain a stable converged solution it was necessary to reduce the grid size close to the leading edge to the order of the mean free path, and typically 20,000 time steps were required to achieve convergence. However, once obtained, the solution was a good agreement with experiment.

Book Hypersonic Flow Theory

Download or read book Hypersonic Flow Theory written by Wallace Hayes and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 481 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hypersonic Flow Theory presents the fundamentals of fluid mechanics, focusing on the hypersonic flow theory and approaches in theoretical aerodynamics. This book discusses the assumptions underlying hypersonic flow theory, unified supersonic-hypersonic similitude, two-dimensional and axisymmetric bodies, and circular cylinder. The constant-streamtube-area approximation, streamtube-continuity methods, and tangent-wedge and tangent-cone are also deliberated. This text likewise covers the similar laminar boundary layer solutions, bluntness induced interactions on slender bodies, and free molecule transfer theory. The dynamics of hypersonic flight or hypersonic wing theory, magnetohydrodynamic theory, or any developments involving treatment of the Boltzmann equation are not included. This publication is intended for hypersonic aerodynamicists, students, and researchers conducting work on the hypersonic flow phenomena.
