Book Progress in Atomic Spectroscopy

Download or read book Progress in Atomic Spectroscopy written by W. Hanle and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 811 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: W. HANLE and H. KLEINPOPPEN In 1919, in the first edition of Atombau and Spektrallinien, Sommerfeld referred to the immense amount of information which had been accumu lated during the first period of 60 years of spectroscopic practice. Sommer feld emphasized that the names of Planck and Bohr would be connected forever with the efforts that had been made to understand the physics and the theory of spectral lines. Another period of almost 60 years has elapsed since the first edition of Sommerfeld's famous monograph. As the editors of this monograph, Progress in Atomic Spectroscopy, we feel that the present period is best characterized by the large variety of new spec troscopic methods that have been invented in the last decades. Spectroscopy has always been involved in the field of research on atomic structure and the interaction of light and atoms. The development of new spectroscopic methods (i.e., new as compared to the traditional optical methods) has led to many outstanding achievements, which, together with the increase of activity over the last decades, appear as a kind of renaissance of atomic spectroscopy.

Book Hyperfine Structures and Anomaly of Li6 and Li7 and the Hyperfine Structures of Re186 and Re188

Download or read book Hyperfine Structures and Anomaly of Li6 and Li7 and the Hyperfine Structures of Re186 and Re188 written by Richard Guenther Schlect and published by . This book was released on 1963 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The atomic-beam magnetic-resonance flop-in technique was used to determine the hyperfine-structure separations and the hyperfine-structure anomaly between the isotopes Li/sup 6/ and Li/sup 7/; this technique was also used to measure the hyperfine-structure separations of the isotopes Re/sup 186/ and Re/ sup 188/. The separated-oscillatory-field method of Ramsey was used to very accurately determine the hyperfinestructure separations in Li/sup 6/ and Li/sup 7/ . The hyperfine-structure anomaly was determined using the separation values. The magnetic-dipole-interaction constant and the electricquadrupole-interaction constant were measured for the two radioactive isotopes of rhenium in the J = 5/2 ground state. Beams were produced by electron bombardment of irradiated rhenium wires. The spins of both isotopes were determined previously to be one. The nuclear moments of both isotopes were determined to be positive. An improved value for the electronic Lande g factor for rhenium was also obtained, with the result g = -1.95203(8).

Book Optically Pumped Atoms

    Book Details:
  • Author : William Happer
  • Publisher : John Wiley & Sons
  • Release : 2010-02-02

Download or read book Optically Pumped Atoms written by William Happer and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2010-02-02 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Covering the most important knowledge on optical pumping of atoms, this ready reference is backed by numerous examples of modelling computation for optical pumped systems. The authors show for the first time that modern scientific computing software makes it practical to analyze the full, multilevel system of optically pumped atoms. To make the discussion less abstract, the authors have illustrated key points with sections of MATLAB codes. To make most effective use of contemporary mathematical software, it is especially useful to analyze optical pumping situations in the Liouville space of density matrices rather than in the traditional Hilbert space of wave functions. This unique approach allows modelling under most experimental conditions, e.g. - magnetic resonance with one or more oscillating magnetic fields, - coherent population trapping or CPG resonances induce by modulated light, - magneto-optic forces on multilevel atoms, - various spin-relaxation processes etc. The reader of this book should have a basic understanding of quantum mechanics, atomic physics, optics and magnetic resonance. Some familiarity with MATLAB would be helpful to a reader interested in writing specialized programs based on the illustrative codes to analyze specialized optical-pumping phenomena.

Book Perspectives In Heavy Ion Physics Proceedings Of The 3rd Japan italy Joint Symposium 97

Download or read book Perspectives In Heavy Ion Physics Proceedings Of The 3rd Japan italy Joint Symposium 97 written by Cosimo Signorini and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1998-12-30 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These proceedings present the most recent progress made by Japanese and Italian researchers in the field of heavy ion physics. They cover both experimental and theoretical aspects from low energies (Tandem Van de Graaff accelerators) to medium energies (LINAC, Cyclotrons) up to relativistic energies (LHC at CERN).The majority of the experiments presented have been performed in the two largest Italian laboratories: LNL, Legnaro-Padova, with the Tandem + SC Linac (ALPI); LNS, Catania, with the Tandem + SC Cyclotron; and in one of the largest Japanese facilities: RIKEN, Saitama, with the Ring Cyclotron. The future Italian developments with relativistic heavy ions at LHC (CERN) are also presented, as well as experiments in collaboration with other laboratories, like JAERI, CNS (University of Tokyo), the Tandem Accelerator Center (Tsukuba), GANIL (France), and the Accelerator Laboratory in Munich, Germany. The highlights of the proceedings, and the area in which most experimental efforts are presently involved, are: research with radioactive ion beams at RIKEN with the RIPS separator; spectroscopy study at LNL with the GASP/EUROBALL 4πγ spectrometers; and intermediate energy hysics (deep inelastic, fragmentation) at LNS.Also presented are the future trends in Japan at RIKEN, RiBeam Factory, and JHP at KEK, and in Italy EXCYT at LNS and SPES at LNL. All these new developments are strongly connected with production and subsequent exploitation of radioactive ion beams, and offer a very promising, fertile future.
