Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Songs of the Spirit: Hymns of Praise and Prayer to God the Holy Ghost In the Second Charge of the Bishop of New Jersey (A.D. 1865), entitled "The Church's Power in her Controversy with Antichrist," whilst earnestly advocating the, duty and privilege of direct addresses to God the Holy Ghost, as the divine Administrator for Christ of this Dispensation, the following language was employed: - "We must pray to the Holy Ghost, as to the Father and to the Son, or we do not pray in the fulness of the Evangelical development of the duty. To pray is to address our petition to God; but the God Whom we Christians worship is Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Every petition to God simply, in our Liturgy, is a prayer to the Three Persons of the one Divine Nature; but this is not always distinctly before our minds, and I desire to bring it out with emphasis. "The devotional treasures of the whole Church, and of all holy men who have composed petitions to the Third Person of the adorable Trinity, in Hymns as well as in Prayers, are spread out before us, and we can use them, at our will, in our private, family, and social devotions." In the above quotation may be found the origin and design of this Collection of Hymns to the Holy Ghost. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Songs of Power and Prayer in the Columbia Plateau

Download or read book Songs of Power and Prayer in the Columbia Plateau written by Chad Hamill and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Songs of Power and Prayer in the Columbia Plateau explores the role of song as a transformative force in the twentieth century, tracing a cultural, spiritual, and musical encounter that upended notions of indigeneity and the rules of engagement for Indians and priests in the Columbia Plateau. In Chad Hamill's narrative, a Jesuit and his two Indian "grandfathers"--one a medicine man, the other a hymn singer--engage in a collective search for the sacred. The priest becomes a student of the medicine man. The medicine man becomes a Catholic. The Indian hymn singer brings indigenous songs to the Catholic mass. Using song as a thread, these men weave together two worlds previously at odds, realizing a promise born two centuries earlier within the prophecies of Circling Raven and Shining Shirt. Songs of Power and Prayer reveals how song can bridge worlds: between the individual and Spirit, the Jesuits and the Indians. Whether sung in an indigenous ceremony or adapted for Catholic Indian services, song abides as a force that strengthens Native identity and acts as a conduit for power and prayer. Book excerpt: "What I particularly appreciated as I read through these texts is that each one is an engaging meditation that combines sound theology with poetic skill. I think they would be an enrichment to any worshiping community and certainly food for personal reflection and prayer." The Most Rev. Frank T. Griswold, Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church Before Michael Hudson was ordained, he was a successful songwriter in the Contemporary Christian field with 75 hymns to his credit. As his journey led him to become a liberal Anglican, he turned his considerable skill at matching text and tune to writing hymn texts. He began a spiritual discipline of writing a text for each of the gospels of the three-year cycle of Scripture readings. The result is a collection of 153 beautiful, evocative, and very singable poetic hymn texts. Each text can be sung to at least one familiar hymn tune, making the material easily accessible to congregations. A hymn tune index and a thematic index provide additional planning possibilities. Based on the Episcopal lectionary in the Book of Common Prayer, hymn tunes are suggested for each text and are indexed metrically so that substitutions may be made when necessary. Songs may be reproduced for congregational use.
