Book excerpt: The Hymnarium presents hymns for the major and minor hours for Sundays and weekdays throughout the year, the Proper of Time, the Proper of Saints (including proper hymns for many Dominican saints), and the Common of Saints. The texts of the Hymnarium are derived from the Breviarium O.P. of 1952 and the Irish Dominican Breviary of 1967. Each hymn is provided in Latin and English versions set to a limited variety of chant melodies that are reused on various occasions throughout the book. Each verse is set to a chant melody, while also providing indications for singing the texts to metrical hymn melodies. The limited yet balanced number of melodies allows the repertoire to be easily learned and used, while still offering a rich variety that avoids monotony. The hymns contained in the Hymnarium belong to the musical patrimony of the Order, having been authored or compiled by friars over the course of centuries.

Book Motherland and Progress

Download or read book Motherland and Progress written by József Sisa and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 2016-11-21 with total page 1307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 19th century Hungary witnessed unprecedented social, economic and cultural development. The country became an equal partner within the Dual Monarchy when the Austro-Hungarian Compromise of 1867 was concluded. Architecture and all forms of design flourished as never before. A distinctly Central European taste emerged, in which the artistic presence of the German-speaking lands was augmented by the influence of France and England. As this process unfolded, attempts were made to find a uniquely Hungarian form, based on motifs borrowed from peasant art as well as real (or fictitious) historical antecedents. "Motherland and Progress" – the motto of 19th-century Hungarian reformers – reflected the programme embraced by the country in its drive to define its identity and shape its future.

Book Latin Literatures of Medieval and Early Modern Times in Europe and Beyond

Download or read book Latin Literatures of Medieval and Early Modern Times in Europe and Beyond written by Francesco Stella and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2024-07-15 with total page 726 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The textual heritage of Medieval Latin is one of the greatest reservoirs of human culture. Repertories list more than 16,000 authors from about 20 modern countries. Until now, there has been no introduction to this world in its full geographical extension. Forty contributors fill this gap by adopting a new perspective, making available to specialists (but also to the interested public) new materials and insights. The project presents an overview of Medieval (and post-medieval) Latin Literatures as a global phenomenon including both Europe and extra-European regions. It serves as an introduction to medieval Latin's complex and multi-layered culture, whose attraction has been underestimated until now. Traditional overviews mostly flatten specificities, yet in many countries medieval Latin literature is still studied with reference to the local history. Thus the first section presents 20 regional surveys, including chapters on authors and works of Latin Literature in Eastern, Central and Northern Europe, Africa, the Middle East, Asia, and the Americas. Subsequent chapters highlight shared patterns of circulation, adaptation, and exchange, and underline the appeal of medieval intermediality, as evidenced in manuscripts, maps, scientific treatises and iconotexts, and its performativity in narrations, theatre, sermons and music. The last section deals with literary “interfaces,” that is motifs or characters that exemplify the double-sided or the long-term transformations of medieval Latin mythologemes in vernacular culture, both early modern and modern, such as the legends about King Arthur, Faust, and Hamlet.

Book The Festal Works of St Gregory of Narek

Download or read book The Festal Works of St Gregory of Narek written by Saint Grigor (Narekatsʻi) and published by Liturgical Press. This book was released on 2016 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Saint Gregory of Narek, a monk of the tenth century, knew how to express the sentiments of your people more than anyone. He gave voice to the cry, which became a prayer of a sinful and sorrowful humanity, oppressed by the anguish of its powerlessness, but illuminated by the splendor of God's love and open to the hope of his salvific intervention, which is capable of transforming all things." --Pope Francis, April 12, 2015 This is the first translation in any language of the surviving corpus of the festal works of St. Gregory of Narek, a tenth-century Armenian mystic theologian and poet par excellence (d. 1003). Composed as liturgical works for the various Dominical and related feasts, these poetic writings are literary masterpieces in both lyrical verse and narrative. Unlike Gregory's better-known penitential prayers, these show a jubilant author in a celebratory mood. In this volume Abraham Terian, an eminent scholar of medieval Armenian literature, provides the nonspecialist reader with an illuminating translation of St. Gregory of Narek's festal works. Introducing each composition with an explanatory note, Terian places the works under consideration in their author's thought-world and in their tenth-century landscape.
