Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the first part of this volume the nitrogen-containing compounds of molybdenum are described. The Mo-N system shows that M0 N and MoN are the stable nitrides. MOlybdenum 2 metal dissolves nitrogen to some extent but only at high temperatures. To get better insight into the reactions between nitrogen and molybdenum, the solubility, diffusion, adsorption and desorption phenomena, and ion bombardment are included in the section of the Mo-N system. M0 N has a large range of homogeneity toward lower nitrogen concentrations. The black 2 hexagonal MoN has only a narrow range of homogeneity. In addition some molybdenum compounds containing nitrogen and oxygen are known. The second part contains a full description of the compounds of molybdenum with fluorine. The fluorides MoF n with n ~ 2 are metastable while those with n = 3 to 6 are stable and have been observed in the Mo-F system. Pure MoF can exist without traces of oxygen, in co nt rast 3 to earlier assumptions. MoF was unambigously prepared and characterized in 1957. Its crystal 4 structure is still unknown. MoF is often contaminated with the oxide fluoride MoOF and it is s 4 difficult to remove. Even sm all amounts affect the properties of MoF . MoF , which is liquid at s 6 room temperature and solidifies to a "plastic" crystal modification below ca. 17SC, is the most investigated of all the molybdenum fluorides.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present volume continues the edition of a number of supplement volumes dealing with the elements tungsten and molybdenum. The compounds of molybdenum with noble gases, hydrogen and oxygen, anhydrous antimony-, bismuth- and alkalimolybdates as well as compounds of molybdenum oxides with oxides of other metals have been described in volume B 1 and B 2. The oxide hydrates and the molybdate ions are dealt with in volume B 3a. The volume molybdenum supplement B 4 contains the hydrous oxocompounds of the metals Sb to Cr with molybdenum. Description of the element molybdenum is covered by the supplement volumes A 1, A 2a, A 2b and A3. In the first part of this volume the description of the oxomolybdenum (VI) species in aqueous solution, which was started in the "Molybdenum" Supplement Volume B 3a, 1987, is continued and completed with the Section on the chemical reactions. After a general overview on the chemical properties of the molybdate ions in aqueous solution, the typical reactions are treated in separate chapters, e.g., reduction, precipitation, formation of heteropolymolybdate ions, reactions with organic ligands, etc. The second part of this volume deals with the oxomolybdenum (VI) species in nonaqueous (organic) solvents. Most of the polymeric species are different from those occurring in aqueous media. The last Section on the oxospecies in solution describes the species in melts such as alkali chlorides, nitrates, and chromates. Finally, the peroxomolybdate ions are treated in a separate Section.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As was announced two years ago, the description of the physical properties of molybde num has now been completed in the present volume up to page 124. Whereas most properties, e.g., the electrical, magnetic, and optical properties, are dealt with in the usual manner, the results of studies of the atom and ion emission had to be presented in a revised form, comprising not only the most recent data but having in mind also the corresponding data for tungsten, which will be represented in a supplement volume now in preparation. The various modes of electron emission have also been studied in great detail. Many more pages (exactly 226 pages, as contrasted to three pages in the Main Volume) were needed to present the electrochemical data for molybdenum, which were published to an astonishingly great extent by Russian workers. The large volume of literature is due to the extensive industrial application of the metaL, cf. "MoLybdän" Erg.-Bd. A 1, 1977, and to its occurrence in various oxidation states. Thus the equilibrium between an Mo eLectrode and Mo ions or between an inert eLectrode and Mo ions is deaLt with in the chapters "Standard PotentiaLs" and "PotentiaLs", whereas kinetics and reaction mechanisms of the reduction and oxidation of Mo ions on a dropping mercury electrode and other inert eLectrodes can be found in the chapter "Polarography/ Voltammetry."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Gmelin Formula Index and its First Supplement covered those volumes of the Eighth Edition of the Gmelin Handbook which had been issued up to the end of 1979. The present Second Supplement updates the Index by inclusion of the volumes which appeared up to the end of 1987. With this Second Supplement all compounds described in the Gmelin Handbook of Inorganic Chemistry in the period between 1924 and 1987 can be located. The basic structure of the Formula Index remains the same as in the previous editions. Computer techniques were employed in the preparation and print of the Second Supple ment. The data acquisition, sorting, and further data handling were performed with the aid of aseries of computer programs developed by staft members of the former "Online Group" of the Gmelin Institute, now at Chemplex GmbH, and by the printer" Universitäts druckerei H. Stürtz AG, Würzburg ". Whereas the Handbook itself will continue to appear in printed form, the present Second Supplement of the Index is intended to be the last one issued in print. The cumulated contents of the Index and its Supplements are contained in the Gmelin Formula Index (GFI) database which is available to the scientific community via STN. This database will be updated annually to include the published Handbook volumes.

Book excerpt: A fascinating aspect of many of the selenium- and tellurium-containing compounds described in this volume is that they are built up from octahedral Mo6 clusters which are surrounded by eight other atoms X in the form of a cube: Mo6X8. The Mo atoms occupy the centers of the faces of the X8 cube. The interesting variety in the substiution of the X positions can be encountered throughout the whole volume. The X atoms can be of a single element as in Mo6Te8, but can also be statistically occupied by two elements, e.g., in Mo6(Te,S)8, or even by more elements as in Mo6(Te,Se)8-yIy. In addition, there are channels with vacant positions between the Mo6X8 clusters in the diagonal direction of the X8 cube. These vacant positions offer more possibilities for the fantasy of the chemist.

Book excerpt: The Molybdenum Supplement Volume B/7 covers binary molybdenum sulfides and sulfide ions, the most prominent being molybdenum sulfide MoS2 on account of its numerous practical applications. It is a dry lubricant material and has become indispensable in high-vacuum and space applications. Semiconducting MoS2 photoelectrodes have achieved sizable solar energy conversions in photoelectrochemical cells. Its capability to reversibly intercalate lithium ions enables the construction of low-weight, high efficiency, secondary batteries. MoS2 doped with cobalt is useful as a catalyst of the hydrosulfurization of organic compounds. All these remarkable properties are related to its layered structure built up of covalently bound SMoS sheets held together by only weak van der Waals forces.

Book excerpt: This volume describes preparation and properties of the enormous number of molybdenum oxide sulfide ions. The monomeric anions display an impressive range of colors - yellow to a deep reddish orange - which in 1826 fascinated Berzelius. Nowadays, however, the stimulus for research and development springs from bioinorganic chemistry. Numerous molybdenum chalcogenide halides are known: the most investigated have been those containing Mo6 clusters. In addition, the volume contains the binary molybdenum selenides; of these, the most important is the heavily studied MoSe2. Among the molybdenum dichalcogenides, MoSe2 shows the most promising photoelectrochemical properties, making it attractive for use in electrochemical solar cells. All binary molybdenum selenides reversibly intercalate a variety of metals - of importance for use in rechargeable batteries.

Book Electrochemical Synthesis of Inorganic Compounds

Download or read book Electrochemical Synthesis of Inorganic Compounds written by Zoltan Nagy and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 485 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Electrochemical synthesis of inorganic compounds is a relatively unknown field. The successful, large industrial processes, such as chlorine-caustic production, are well known, but the large number of other compounds that have been synthesized electrochemically are much less appreciated, even by electrochemists and inorganic chemists. The last comprehensive book on this subject was published in the 1930's and no modern review or summary of the whole field is in existence. But the field is in no way dormant, as attested by the large number of publications, undiminished throughout the years, describing new syntheses and improvements of old ones. Indeed, it can be expected that practical applications of electrochemical inor ganic syntheses will increase in the future as an increasing portion of our energy will be available in electrical form. Electrochemical processes have important advantages over chemical routes: often the selectivity of the reaction can be better controlled through the use of potential control at the electrode, and the creation of environmen tally harmful waste material can be avoided more easily since one is using the purest reagent - the electron. In addition to development of new synthetic routes, many old ones, which were found to be un economical in the past, are worth reexamining in light of the recent considerable advances in cell design principles, materials of construc tion, and electrode and separator materials, together with our im proved understanding of electrode reactions and electrocatalysis. It is in the hope of accelerating this process that this bibliography is published.

Book Effect of Heavy Metal Pollution on Plants

Download or read book Effect of Heavy Metal Pollution on Plants written by N. W. Lepp and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Trace metals occur as natural constituents of the earth's crust, and are ever present constituents of soils, natural waters and living matter. The biological significance of this disparate assemblage of elements has gradually been uncovered during the twentieth century; the resultant picture is one of ever-increasing complexity. Several of these elements have been demonstrated to be essential to the functions of living organisms, others appear to only interact with living matter in a toxic manner, whilst an ever-decreasing number do not fall conveniently into either category. When the interactions between trace metals and plants are considered, one must take full account of the known chemical properties of each element. Consideration must be given to differences in chemical reactivity, solubility and to interactions with other inorganic and organic molecules. A clear understanding of the basic chemical properties of an element of interest is an essential pre-requisite to any subsequent consideration of its biological significance. Due consideration to basic chemical considerations is a theme which runs through the collection of chapters in both volumes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work was begun quite some time ago at the University of Oxford during the tenure of an Overseas Scholarship of the Royal Commission for the Exhibition of 1851 and was completed at Banga lore when the author was being supported by a maintenance allowance from the CSIR Pool for unemployed scientists. It is hoped that significant developments taking place as late as the beginning of 1965 have been incorporated. The initial impetus and inspiration for the work came from Dr. K. Mendelssohn. To him and to Drs. R. W. Hill and N. E. Phillips, who went through the whole of the text, the author is obliged in more ways than one. For permission to use figures and other materials, grateful thanks are tendered to the concerned workers and institutions. The author is not so sanguine as to imagine that all technical and literary flaws have been weeded out. If others come across them, they may be charitably brought to the author's notice as proof that physics has become too vast to be comprehended by a single onlooker. E. S.
