Book Hydropower from Small and Low head Hydro Technologies

Download or read book Hydropower from Small and Low head Hydro Technologies written by Amanda E. Niemi and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Climate change concerns have brought a renewed focus on increased hydropower production as a potential replacement for electricity from fossil fuels. Hydropower currently accounts for about 6% of the electricity produced in the United States, and the generation of electricity from hydropower produces essentially no emissions of carbon. However, since most of the larger, more traditional hydroelectric resources have already been developed, a clean energy rationale for development of small and low-head hydropower resources may now exist. This book examines small hydro and low-head hydro technologies and the forward thinking regulations that encourage the development of these resources in cost-effective, environmentally friendly ways which recognise that such facilities, once built, can last for at least 50 years

Book Micro hydro Design Manual

Download or read book Micro hydro Design Manual written by Adam Harvey and published by Intermediate Technology. This book was released on 1993-01 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Micro-Hydro Design Manual has grown from Intermediate Technology's field experiences with micro-hydro installations and covers operation and maintenance, commissioning, electrical power, induction generators, electronic controllers, management, and energy surveys. There is an increasing need in many countries for power supplies to rural areas, partly to support industries, and partly to provide illumination at night. Government authorities are faced with the very high costs of extending electricity grids. Often micro-hydro provides an economic alternative to the grid. This is because independentmicro-hydro schemes save on the cost of grid transmission lines, and because grid extension schemes often have very expensive equipment and staff costs. In contrast, micro-hydro schemes can be designed and built by local staff andsmaller organizations following less strict regulations and using 'off-the-shelf' components or locally made machinery.

Book Motors as Generators for Micro Hydro Power

Download or read book Motors as Generators for Micro Hydro Power written by Nigel Smith and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a guide to the use of induction motors for electricity generation in remote locations. It is written as a practical handbook for engineers and technicians involved in designing and installing small water-power schemes for isolated houses and communities. This revised edition brings in new concepts developed and tested to expand the power range of application of motors as generators, to make this technology safer and more reliable, while keeping costs low and making it accessible to developing countries. It also contains a new chapter on mains-connecting micro-hydro generators. This edition also draws on the practical experience of manufacturers and installers of induction generator units working in village locations in a large number of countries, among them Sri Lanka, Nepal, Peru, Kenya and others.

Download or read book Designed for Water written by Masoud Akbarzadeh and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-29 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hydro power is one of the cleanest sources of renewable energy on earth with a long history of exploitation. The conventional methods of harnessing this energy which mainly involve building dams on the rivers and natural reservoirs have caused some irreversible environmental impacts; large scale hydropower plants are being decommissioned every year and the tendency increases towards the use of this energy on smaller scales. Architecture today merges with technology and sustainable design. If the hydropower plants can be integrated into the building units, the future of urban design and architecture will not be separated from energy production. Perhaps, the plan of the future cities will be based on the idea of energy-producing units. Therefore, the role of architects and designers in integrating such units into the body of cities and building structures will become more critical.“Designed for Water” intends to encourage designers to apply hydraulic design ideas in the design and planning of future cities. In this book, number of the hydraulic/ hydropower projects with unique characteristics were selected to not only emphasize their distinctive design and mechanisms, but also to reflect their architectural design capacities. Each chapter of this book highlights specific design feature or invention that makes the selected projects unique in comparison with the other hydropower plants/ hydraulic projects around the world. This book, therefore, is formed around the following topics: a historic precedent integrating the hydropower plants with urban spaces; an innovative barrier; the integration of hydropower plants with their surrounding landscape; an innovative small scale hydropower plant for low head flows; network of interconnected hydropower plants; and, inventive turbines.
