Book Hydrogeology of the Devil s Hole Area Ash Meadows Nevada Classic Reprint

Download or read book Hydrogeology of the Devil s Hole Area Ash Meadows Nevada Classic Reprint written by G. William Fiero and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-07 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hydrogeology of the Devil's Hole Area, Ash Meadows, Nevada The ground-water discharging from the major springs in Ash Meadows and the water level of the pool in Devil's Hole is an inherent part of a regional carbonate ground-water flow system. Ground-water movement and the location of the major Springs is controlled in part by major faults. Water from the carbonate aquifer recharges most if not all of the over lying alluvial aquifers. Large scale ground-water withdrawal by pumping from wells was initiated by Spring Meadows, Inc. In the spring of 1969. These wells draw water from the alluvial aquifers, which are highly transmissive in the Devil's Hole area. It is possible that some wells may penetrate the carbonate rock and may draw water directly from it. The relationship of the time of maximum pumping to the periods of water-level decline in Devil's Hole shows a high degree of correlation Continued heavy ground-water withdrawal by pumping will cause a continued decline in pool level in Devil's Hole and a reduction of discharge from the major springs in the Ash Meadows area. A hydrologic alternative for irrigation is to utilize the natural spring discharge in conjunction with surface storage facilities. It is estimated that the annual acre-feet discharge from springs will irrigate somewhat more than acres of land. Additional ground-water development by pumping may be possible without materially interfering with the pool level of Devil's Hole or natural spring discharge, but this effect should be determined by additional hydrologic study. A hydrologic monitoring system and a series of pumping tests should be initiated immediately to determine the discharge from each of the major springs and pumping centers and to de termine aquifer characteristics. These data could be utilized to make predictive mathematical models of the local hydrologic system which would form the basis of a water management system for the Ash Meadows area. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cyprinodon diabolis, or Devils Hole pupfish: a one-inch-long, iridescent blue fish whose only natural habitat is a ten-by-sixty-foot pool near Death Valley, on the Nevada-California border. The rarest fish in the world. As concern for the future of biodiversity mounts, Devils Hole Pupfish asks how a tiny blue fish—confined to a single, narrow aquifer on the edge of Death Valley National Park in Nevada’s Amargosa Desert—has managed to survive despite numerous grave threats. For decades, the pupfish has been the subject of heated debate between environmentalists intent on protecting it from extinction and ranchers and developers in the region who need the aquifer’s water to support their livelihoods. Drawing on archival detective work, interviews, and a deep familiarity with the landscape of the surrounding Amargosa Desert, author Kevin C. Brown shows how the seemingly isolated Devils Hole pupfish has persisted through its relationships with some of the West’s most important institutions: federal land management policy, western water law, ecological sciences, and the administration of endangered-species legislation. The history of this entanglement between people and the pupfish makes its story unique. The species was singled out for protection by the National Park Service, made one of the first “listed” endangered species, and became one of the first controversial animals of the modern environmental era, with one bumper sticker circulating in Nevada in the early 1970s reading “Save the Pupfish,” while another read “Kill the Pupfish.” But the story of the pupfish should be considered for more than its peculiarity. Moreover, Devils Hole Pupfish explores the pupfish’s journey through modern American history and offers lessons for anyone looking to better understand the politics of water in southern Nevada, the operation of the Endangered Species Act, or the science surrounding desert ecosystems.

Download or read book Ecological Genomics written by Christian R. Landry and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-25 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Researchers in the field of ecological genomics aim to determine how a genome or a population of genomes interacts with its environment across ecological and evolutionary timescales. Ecological genomics is trans-disciplinary by nature. Ecologists have turned to genomics to be able to elucidate the mechanistic bases of the biodiversity their research tries to understand. Genomicists have turned to ecology in order to better explain the functional cellular and molecular variation they observed in their model organisms. We provide an advanced-level book that covers this recent research and proposes future development for this field. A synthesis of the field of ecological genomics emerges from this volume. Ecological Genomics covers a wide array of organisms (microbes, plants and animals) in order to be able to identify central concepts that motivate and derive from recent investigations in different branches of the tree of life. Ecological Genomics covers 3 fields of research that have most benefited from the recent technological and conceptual developments in the field of ecological genomics: the study of life-history evolution and its impact of genome architectures; the study of the genomic bases of phenotypic plasticity and the study of the genomic bases of adaptation and speciation.

Book Hypogene Karst Regions and Caves of the World

Download or read book Hypogene Karst Regions and Caves of the World written by Alexander Klimchouk and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-08-17 with total page 903 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book illustrates the diversity of hypogene speleogenetic processes and void-conduit patterns depending on variations of the geological environments by presenting regional and cave-specific case studies. The cases include both well-known and newly recognized hypogene karst regions and caves of the world. They all focus on geological, hydrogeological, geodynamical and evolutionary contexts of hypogene speleogenesis. The last decade has witnessed the boost in recognition of the possibility, global occurrence, and practical importance of hypogene karstification (speleogenesis), i.e. the development of solutional porosity and permeability by upwelling flow, independent of recharge from the overlying or immediately adjacent surface. Hypogene karst has been identified and documented in many regions where it was previously overlooked or misinterpreted. The book enriches the basis for generalization and categorization of hypogene karst and thus improves our ability to adequately model hypogene karstification and predict related porosity and permeability. It is a book which benefits every researcher, student, and practitioner dealing with karst.

Download or read book The Ash Warriors written by C. R. Anderegg and published by Department of the Air Force. This book was released on 2000 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In November 1991 the American flag was lowered for the last time at Clark Air Base in the Philippines. This act brought to an end American military presence in the Philippines that extended back over 90 years. It also represented the final act in a drama that began with the initial rumblings in April of that year of the Mount inatubo volcano, located about nine miles to the east of Clark. This book tells the remarkable story of the men and women of the Clark community and their ordeal in planning for and carrying out their evacuation from Clark in face of the impending volcanic activity. It documents the actions of those who remained on the base during the series of Mount Pinatubo' s eruptions, and the packing out of the base during the subsequent months. This is the story of the Ash Warriors, those Air Force men and women who carried out their mission in the face of an incredible series of natural disasters, including volcanic eruption, flood, typhoons, and earthquakes, all of which plagued Clark and the surrounding areas during June and July 1991.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Time travel, UFOs, mysterious planets, stigmata, rock-throwing poltergeists, huge footprints, bizarre rains of fish and frogs-nearly a century after Charles Fort's Book of the Damned was originally published, the strange phenomenon presented in this book remains largely unexplained by modern science. Through painstaking research and a witty, sarcastic style, Fort captures the imagination while exposing the flaws of popular scientific explanations. Virtually all of his material was compiled and documented from reports published in reputable journals, newspapers and periodicals because he was an avid collector. Charles Fort was somewhat of a recluse who spent most of his spare time researching these strange events and collected these reports from publications sent to him from around the globe. This was the first of a series of books he created on unusual and unexplained events and to this day it remains the most popular. If you agree that truth is often stranger than fiction, then this book is for you"--Taken from Good Reads website.
