Book excerpt: The Savannah River Laboratory has the responsibility for hydrogeochemical and stream sediment reconnaissance surveys of 25 Eastern States in ERDA's National Uranium Resource Evaluation (NURE) program. Equipment developed for field collection, filtration (at 40 psig), absorption spectrum measurements, and ion exchange concentrations of geochemical samples was built into a 30-pound backpack. Hundredfold concentration of water-soluble species is provided by the portable ion exchange equipment. A neutron activation facility has been developed with a natural U detection limit of 0.6 ppb in 10 ml of aqueous solution and a U/Th discrimination ratio of 600:1. Preliminary data from a central Georgia study area indicate that U concentrations increase with decreasing grain size of bottom sediments, but that the finer grain sizes may not define a given source as well as coarser grain sizes. U concentrations in stream water averaged 30 parts per trillion. In the same streams, the 40 to 100 mesh bottom sediment averaged 13 ppm U, the 100 to 200 mesh sediment average 48 ppm U, and the -200 mesh material averaged 96 ppm U.U content of suspended solids filtered from the streams averaged 4.6 ppm. Book excerpt: Sample site selection and planning were initiated for a reconnaissance sampling project covering 14,000 square miles in western Utah. Reconnaissance sampling contracts were placed for the Humboldt River Basin and six basins in the Lovelock and Winnemucca quadrangles in northern Nevada. Planning was completed for two orientation studies in northeastern Washington. A technical paper, ''Dispersion of Uranium and Selected Trace Elements in Playa Basins, '' was presented at the 25th International Geological Congress in Sydney, Australia, August 15-25, 1976. Installation of the high-throughput instrumental neutron-activation analysis system and a new delayed-neutron counter will be completed in December, 1976. An arc source and 22 direct-reading channels were added to the emission spectrometer for sediment analyses. The Phase II computer system was purchased with FY 1976T capital equipment funds. This system will provide on-line data reduction for several analytical systems and will perform all data-base-management tasks. A computer-readable magnetic tape of the data in the Walker River Basin Pilot Study report was sent to Oak Ridge National Laboratory for entry into the NURE national data base. Data reports for five orientation studies were open-filed in this quarter.

Book excerpt: A geochemical reconnaissance of twenty-five eastern states for uranium will be conducted by the Savannah River Laboratory for the U.S. Energy Research and Development Administration. A sound technical basis for the reconnaissance is being developed by intensive studies of sampling, analysis, and data management. Results of three orientation studies in the southern Appalachian Piedmont and Blue Ridge areas indicate that multi-element analysis of -100 mesh (less than 149 .mu.m) stream sediments will provide adequate information for reconnaissance. Stream and groundwater samples also provide useful information but are not considered cost-effective for regional reconnaissance in the areas studied.

Included in the LLL portion of this survey are seven western states (Arizona, California, Idaho, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, and Washington). Similar surveys are being carried out in the rest of the continental United States, including Alaska, as part of a systematic nationwide study of the distribution of uranium in surface water, groundwater, and stream sediment. The overall objective is to identify favorable areas for uranium exploration. This paper describes the program being conducted by LLL to complete our portion of the survey by 1981. The topics discussed are geology and sample acquisition, sample preparation and analysis, and data-base management.
