This book was released on 1966 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In anticipation of the growing use by the U.S. Navy of hydrofoils as gun boats, patrol boats, and as antisubmarine warfare craft, a study was initiated to formulate the mathematical models required for simulating the hydrofoil as a pilot-controlled training situation and as a target or own-ship vehicle. This report summarizes the work performed during the course of the study. The principal work of the study resulted in two technical reports: the Mathematical Model Report (Technical Report: NAVTRADEVCEN 1630-2, Vols. I-III) and the Performance Criteria and Test Report (Technical Report: NAVTRADEVCEN 1630-1). The FINAL REPORT includes a description of the analog computer simulation which was assembled and tested using the information contained in the two technical reports. The U.S. Navy Hydrofoil Patrol Craft PC(H)-1, HIGH POINT, was used as the basis for this phase of the work. Equations, scale factors and wiring diagrams for the simulation are presented. It is now known that some of the present-day limitations of the equations and simulation technique will yeild to further work. Consequently, one suggestion is that further effort be applied to developing a method of simulating foilborne turns in realistic seas. In addition, the problem of simulating hull wave inpact forces in real time merits attention. (Author).

Book Hydrofoil Simulation Equations Study Mathematical Model Report Volume I Foilborne Equations of Motion

Download or read book Hydrofoil Simulation Equations Study Mathematical Model Report Volume I Foilborne Equations of Motion written by J. J. Jamieson and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 136 pages. This report presents the results of the study. The mathematical formulation was developed in three parts; each part is treated as the topic of a separate volume of the report. Volume I presents the complete six-degrees-of-freedom equations of motion for a hydrofoil craft in the foilborne mode. To ensure realism in the equation solutions, known nonlinear effects are incorporated in the derivations. Material presented in the three volumes enables a person to assemble a hydrofoil simulation which will demonstrate craft dynamic behavior during take-off or landing in smooth water, during foilborne maneuvers in smooth water or regular waves, and during foilborne operation on a fixed heading in realistic seas. The limitations inherent in the work at present result mainly from a lack of a complete theoretical or empirical description of foil and strut hydrodynamic characteristics. For future improvements in simulation realism, advancements must be supported in the field of hydrofoil hydrodynamics.

Volume III covers the concepts and equations necessary for the mathematical description of realistic seas. The essential wave characteristics of height and orbital particle velocity are described in terms of statistical properties--in particular, power spectral densities. This report presents the results of the study. The mathematical formulation was developed in three parts; each part is treated as the topic of a separate volume of the report. Volume II treats hull lift, drag and moment relationships as they pertain to craft operation on a straight course in smooth water. The methods described depend on the availability of hull model data covering the full range of speed, draft, and pitch angles experienced by a hull during take-off and landing transitions. Book Hydrofoil Simulation Equations Study Performance Criteria and Test Report for Hydrofoil Craft

Download or read book Hydrofoil Simulation Equations Study Performance Criteria and Test Report for Hydrofoil Craft written by J. J. Jamieson and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the simulation of hydrofoil craft, performance tests are required to ascertain that the simulated vehicle exhibits the same characteristics as the operational vehicle. This report discusses the particular static and dynamic characteristics which can be considered to define hydrofoil craft. Definitive characteristics of realistic seas are also given. Tolerances for differences between full scale and simulated characteristics are proposed which are consistent with the current state-of-the-art of hydrofoils. Available definitive characteristics of PC(H)-1, HIGH POINT, are included and simulated characteristics of the vessel are shown to demonstrate the degree of correlation which has been achieved for this vessel. In general, the simulation can correctly reproduce any known full-scale static characteristic. However, correlation between simulated and actual dynamic characteristics is not completely satisfactory. It is suspected that this shortcoming stems from a less-than-satisfactory level of full-scale static data accuracy. For simulation purposes collection and interpretation of significant quantities of full-scale test data offers the most direct route to improved correlation. Other improvements are to be expected from refinements in automatic statistical analysis techniques.

Book Motion Control of High speed Hydrofoil Vessels Using State space Methods

Download or read book Motion Control of High speed Hydrofoil Vessels Using State space Methods written by Iason Chatzakis and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: (Cont.) It is found that a linear-quadratic optimal controller can attenuate the motion response of the vessel advancing in monochromatic or ocean waves, with proper adjustment of the cost matrices that enter the quadratic performance criterion used. Accurate dynamic modeling is crucial in the design of control laws for any system. Vessels that operate on or near the free surface experience hydrodynamic memory effects due to their own motion. Casting the seakeeping equations of motion into a linear, time-invariant state-space model suitable for the design of optimal control laws is challenging since there is no straightforward way of including these memory effects in the model. In this work, the seakeeping equations of motion are cast in a linear state-space form which does not include memory effects, and the motion control simulation results show that this model is satisfactory for the design of hydrofoil vessel control laws.
