Book Hydroelectric Developments and Engineering

Download or read book Hydroelectric Developments and Engineering written by Frank Koester and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-17 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hydroelectric Developments and Engineering: A Practical and Theoretical Treatise on the Development, Design, Construction, Equipment and Operation of Hydroelectric Transmission Plants Owing to our supposedly inexhaustible coal supply, interest in hydraulic develop ment has naturally been of tardy growth until recent years; and it is only lately that the government has taken steps toward the development and commercial use of water power resources and the preservation Of the forests. In Europe the limited coal supply early induced the utilization of the water resources; and the various Continental governments encouraged this movement by granting favorable franchises, and in many cases advanced money to finance the undertakings, at the same time protecting the water-sheds by rigid enforcement of forest preservation laws. It is but natural, therefore, that hydraulic developments and electric transmission received early and special attention abroad, and as a result Europe abounds in hydraulic developments, utilizing heads varying from inches to 3116 feet.
