Book The Hydrodynamics of Canadian Atlantic Waters Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Hydrodynamics of Canadian Atlantic Waters Classic Reprint written by W. J. Sandström and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-13 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Hydrodynamics of Canadian Atlantic Waters If we were to make an exact model, on a reduced scale, of the area in question, it would appear, at a first glance, to be perfectly at. And on attempting to fill it with water to a level answering to that of the sea, as' a first step to experimental repro duction of the actual hydrographical phenomena, even this would be found practically impossible, owing to the surface tension of the water. So thin a layer would either wet the entire surface of the model or leave dry patches here and there without regard to level. To obtain a basin suitable for the purposes of such experiment, the depth would have to be magnified times in proportion to the horizontal extent. Book The Fluid Envelope of our Planet

Download or read book The Fluid Envelope of our Planet written by Eric L. Mills and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2011-04-23 with total page 449 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Oceans have had a mysterious allure for centuries, inspiring fears, myths, and poetic imaginations. By the early twentieth century, however, scientists began to see oceans as physical phenomena that could be understood through mathematical geophysics. The Fluid Envelope of Our Planet explores the scientific developments from the early middle ages to the twentieth century that illuminated the once murky depths of oceanography. Tracing the transition from descriptive to mathematical analyses of the oceans, Eric Mills examines sailors' and explorers' observations of the oceans, the influence of Scandinavian techniques on German-speaking geographers, and the eventual development of shared quantitative practices and ideas. A detailed and beautifully written account of the history of oceanography, The Fluid Envelope of Our Planet is also an engaging account of the emergence of a scientific discipline.

Book Internal Waves in the Sea

Download or read book Internal Waves in the Sea written by Owen S. Lee and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Internal waves exist in the ocean as a rule rather than an exception. Energy is transported by them in channels that are similar to sound channels. Their effect on naval exercises and equipment, particularly functions involving the use of underwater sound, can be expected to be more pronounced in these channels. Although theory and observation are still not adequate for a full understanding of the phenomenon, western literature prior to June 1963 contains more than 300 publications dealing with internal waves in the atmosphere, lakes, and seas. These publications are listed in the comprehensive bibliography which is part of this report. (Author).

Book Elements of Physical Oceanography

Download or read book Elements of Physical Oceanography written by Hugh J. McLellan and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Elements of Physical Oceanography provides a broad look at most of the topics of concern to Physical Oceanography without treating any part of the subject matter completely or exhaustively. This book originated in a set of lecture notes for an introductory course in Physical Oceanography given by the author in the Department of Oceanography and Meteorology at Texas A&M University. The book is organized into three parts. Part I on descriptive oceanography covers topics such as nature of oceanographic data, the chemical nature of the ocean, the temperature of the ocean, and temperature-salinity relationships. Part II on oceanic movements discusses accelerations arising from mass distribution and the Earth's rotation, geostrophic and wind driven currents, waves, and tides. Part III covers various topics such as sound propagation, the heat budget of the ocean, and estuaries. This book aims to provide the non-physical oceanographer with insight into the physical nature of the environment influencing his chosen studies. The physical oceanographer will be somewhat less than satisfied with the treatment and will wish to read the publications referred to and to follow the suggestions for additional reading.
