A 1/22.5-scale model was towed in the David Taylor Model Basin with variations in displacement, trim, metacentric height (GM), towpoint location and with several stern appendage modifications. The SSN-688 class submarine was towed in a stable configuration at speeds up to 10 kn with the sternplanes set to 25 deg trailing edge up, at a trim between 6.0 and 7.5 ft (1.83 and 2.29 m) down by the stern, at a displacement between 5000 and 5650 LTSW, with a GM between 0.75 and 1.10 ft (0. 23 and 0.34 m), with the lower rudder extended 2.25 ft (0.69 m) and with a lower rudder plate appendage attached. The short-hull and long-hull SSN-637 Class submarine with modified bow was towed in a stable configuration at speeds up to 10 knots (5.14 m/s) full-scale with the sternplanes set to 25 deg trailing edge up, at a trim of 6 ft (1.83 m) down by the stern, at either displacement, at either GM, with either towpoint, with a lower-rudder plate appendage attached.

Book excerpt: Which military missions for unmanned undersea vehicles (UUVs) appear most promising to pursue in terms of military need, operational and technical risks, alternatives, and cost? To answer this question, the authors assess risks associated with using UUVs for advocated missions, identify non-UUV alternatives that may be more appropriate for such missions, and analyze potential costs associated with UUV development and use. They conclude that seven missions: mine countermeasures, deployment of leave-behind surveillance sensors or sensor arrays, near-land and harbor monitoring, oceanography, monitoring undersea infrastructure, anti-submarine warfare tracking, and inspection/identification - appear most promising. Among other recommendations, the authors suggest that the U.S. Navy consolidate its unmanned system master plans and establish relevant priorities in coordination with the Office of the Secretary of Defense. Increased emphasis on the use of surface platforms rather than submarines as host platforms is recommended.
