Book Low Reynolds number hydrodynamics

Download or read book Low Reynolds number hydrodynamics written by J. Happel and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 564 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One studying the motion of fluids relative to particulate systems is soon impressed by the dichotomy which exists between books covering theoretical and practical aspects. Classical hydrodynamics is largely concerned with perfect fluids which unfortunately exert no forces on the particles past which they move. Practical approaches to subjects like fluidization, sedimentation, and flow through porous media abound in much useful but uncorrelated empirical information. The present book represents an attempt to bridge this gap by providing at least the beginnings of a rational approach to fluid particle dynamics, based on first principles. From the pedagogic viewpoint it seems worthwhile to show that the Navier-Stokes equations, which form the basis of all systematic texts, can be employed for useful practical applications beyond the elementary problems of laminar flow in pipes and Stokes law for the motion of a single particle. Although a suspension may often be viewed as a continuum for practical purposes, it really consists of a discrete collection of particles immersed in an essentially continuous fluid. Consideration of the actual detailed boundary value problems posed by this viewpoint may serve to call attention to the limitation of idealizations which apply to the overall transport properties of a mixture of fluid and solid particles.

Book Technology Development Plan for Design Guidelines for Wave induced Hydrodynamic Loading on Structures

Download or read book Technology Development Plan for Design Guidelines for Wave induced Hydrodynamic Loading on Structures written by J. M. Dummer and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This technology development plan reviews the role of the Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) in developing technology for the design of ocean structures subject to wave-induced hydrodynamic loading. Navy design requirements for ocean facilities and the technological deficiencies requiring further development to make these designs both reliable and economical are discussed. Specifically, the topic of wave force prediction technology is reviewed, and a summary of previous and current NAVFAC and Naval Civil Engineering Laboratory wave forces research is provided. A plan is outlined describing the development process necessary to achieve a comprehensive set of design guidelines for both rigid and compliant structures. Major subjects identified for inclusion in the proposed design guidelines include Morison equation force coefficient selection, Morison equation deterministic static analysis, Morison equation random dynamic analysis, diffraction theory analysis, combined large and small body loading anlaysis for Navy ocean structures. A discussion of each of the topics pertinent to these major items is provided.

Download or read book Twenty Second Symposium on Naval Hydrodynamics written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2000-03-02 with total page 1039 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Twenty-Second Symposium on Naval Hydrodynamics was held in Washington, D.C., from August 9-14, 1998. It coincided with the 100th anniversary of the David Taylor Model Basin. This international symposium was organized jointly by the Office of Naval Research (Mechanics and Energy Conversion S&T Division), the National Research Council (Naval Studies Board), and the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Carderock Division (David Taylor Model Basin). This biennial symposium promotes the technical exchange of naval research developments of common interest to all the countries of the world. The forum encourages both formal and informal discussion of the presented papers, and the occasion provides an opportunity for direct communication between international peers.

Book BIOMEDICAL INSTRUMENTATION AND MEASUREMENTS 2nd Ed

Download or read book BIOMEDICAL INSTRUMENTATION AND MEASUREMENTS 2nd Ed written by ANANDA NATARAJAN, R. and published by PHI Learning Pvt. Ltd.. This book was released on 2015-12-01 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Designed as a text for the undergraduate students of instrumentation, electrical, electronics and biomedical engineering, the second edition of the book covers the entire range of instruments and their measurement methods used in the medical field. The functions of the biomedical instruments and measurement methods are presented keeping in mind those students who have minimum required knowledge of human physiology. The purpose of this book is to review the principles of biomedical instrumentation and measurements employed in the hospital industry. Primary emphasis is laid on the method rather than micro level mechanism. This book serves two purposes: One is to explain the mechanism and functional details of human body, and the other is to explain how the biological signals of human body can be acquired and used in a successful manner. New to the second edition • The chapters of the book have been reorganized so that the students can understand the concepts in a systematic manner. • The chapter on Bioelectric Potentials and Transducers has been divided into three new chapters on Transducers for Biomedical Applications, Bioelectric Potential andElectrodes and some new sections are also included in these chapters. • A few sections have also been added to the chapter titled Electrical Safety of Medical Equipment and Patients.

Book Similarity and Modeling in Science and Engineering

Download or read book Similarity and Modeling in Science and Engineering written by Josef Kuneš and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-04-07 with total page 451 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present text sets itself in relief to other titles on the subject in that it addresses the means and methodologies versus a narrow specific-task oriented approach. Concepts and their developments which evolved to meet the changing needs of applications are addressed. This approach provides the reader with a general tool-box to apply to their specific needs. Two important tools are presented: dimensional analysis and the similarity analysis methods. The fundamental point of view, enabling one to sort all models, is that of information flux between a model and an original expressed by the similarity and abstraction Each chapter includes original examples and applications. In this respect, the models can be divided into several groups. The following models are dealt with separately by chapter; mathematical and physical models, physical analogues, deterministic, stochastic, and cybernetic computer models. The mathematical models are divided into asymptotic and phenomenological models. The phenomenological models, which can also be called experimental, are usually the result of an experiment on an complex object or process. The variable dimensionless quantities contain information about the real state of boundary conditions, parameter (non-linearity) changes, and other factors. With satisfactory measurement accuracy and experimental strategy, such models are highly credible and can be used, for example in control systems.
