Book Critical Heat Flux CHF Phenomenon on a Downward Facing Curved Surface

Download or read book Critical Heat Flux CHF Phenomenon on a Downward Facing Curved Surface written by and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes a theoretical and experimental study of the boundary layer boiling and critical heat flux phenomena on a downward facing curved heating surface, including both hemispherical and toroidal surfaces. A subscale boundary layer boiling (SBLB) test facility was developed to measure the spatial variation of the critical heat flux and observe the underlying mechanisms. Transient quenching and steady-state boiling experiments were performed in the SBLB facility under both saturated and subcooled conditions to obtain a complete database on the critical heat flux. To complement the experimental effort, an advanced hydrodynamic CHF model was developed from the conservation laws along with sound physical arguments. The model provides a clear physical explanation for the spatial variation of the CHF observed in the SBLB experiments and for the weak dependence of the CHF data on the physical size of the vessel. Based upon the CHF model, a scaling law was established for estimating the local critical heat flux on the outer surface of a heated hemispherical vessel that is fully submerged in water. The scaling law, which compares favorably with all the available local CHF data obtained for various vessel sizes, can be used to predict the local CHF limits on large commercial-size vessels. This technical information represents one of the essential elements that is needed in assessing the efficacy of external cooling of core melt by cavity flooding as a severe accident management strategy. 83 figs., 3 tabs.

Book Mechanistic Modeling of CHF in Forced convection Subcooled Boiling

Download or read book Mechanistic Modeling of CHF in Forced convection Subcooled Boiling written by and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Because of the complexity of phenomena governing boiling heat transfer, the approach to solve practical problems has traditionally been based on experimental correlations rather than mechanistic models. The recent progress in computational fluid dynamics (CFD), combined with improved experimental techniques in two-phase flow and heat transfer, makes the use of rigorous physically-based models a realistic alternative to the current simplistic phenomenological approach. The objective of this paper is to present a new CFD model for critical heat flux (CHF) in low quality (in particular, in subcooled boiling) forced-convection flows in heated channels.

Book Prediction of the Critical Heat Flux in Forced Convection Flow

Download or read book Prediction of the Critical Heat Flux in Forced Convection Flow written by and published by . This book was released on 1962 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A superposition model is developed to predict the critical heat flux in forced convection flow. The model is applied to available experimental results in boiling water flows and good agreement is obtained between the model and test data over the multitude of geometries, flow rates, pressures, and fluid enthalpies tested to date. Book Critical Heat Fluxes for curved and straight surfaces during subcooled flow boiling

Download or read book Critical Heat Fluxes for curved and straight surfaces during subcooled flow boiling written by Thomas George Hughes and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experimental and analytical studies of the critical heat flux for subcooled flows of Freon 113 over concave, convex and straight surfaces have been conducted. Correlation functions for the critical heat flux on each surface have been developed from an idealized model of the vapor bubble cycle in nucleate boiling. These functions have been evaluated and compared with data collected in an experimental apparatus, constructed as part of this investigation. Details of the apparatus design and operating procedures are given.
