Book Petroleum Contaminated Soils

Download or read book Petroleum Contaminated Soils written by Paul T. Kostecki and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1989-09-30 with total page 544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These three volumes provide valuable information to help bring rational and scientifically feasible solutions to petroleum contaminated soils. State-of-the-art information on both technical and regulatory issues is covered, including environmental fate, health effects, risk assessment and remedial alternatives. They show why petroleum contaminated soils are a problem - and propose solutions for that problem. These books are an excellent reference for regulatory personnel and environmental consultants at all levels.

Book Fundamentals of Site Remediation

Download or read book Fundamentals of Site Remediation written by John Pichtel and published by Government Institutes. This book was released on 2007-08-24 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This introductory manual addresses environmental site restoration practices that both ensure compliance with federal statutes and prevent further contamination or expense. It also includes up-to-date information and several new features to enhance the process. Emphasizing environmental chemistry, soil science, microbiology, plant science, and the underlying chemical processes, author John Pichtel discusses relevant chemical principles as they apply to the cleanup and removal of hazardous chemicals from soil, geological strata, and groundwater. The first part of this book provides an overview of the recent history of environmental contamination and the formulation of relevant regulations, leading to regulations for hazardous waste site remediation. This part also provides a background for several salient aspects of site remediation. The second part of the book closely examines field remediation technologies, including phytoremediation, bioremediation, and electrokinetic remediation. Theory of operation, practical considerations, and possible environmental impacts and other consequences of use are also discussed. Readers of the first edition will discover two new chapters in this Second Edition covering permeable reactive walls and technology selection. This updated edition now also includes end-of-chapter questions and instructions for completing two web-based exercises, one for the chapter on environmental site assessments and one for the chapter on technology selection.

Book Determination of the Soil Water Retention Curve and the Hydraulic Conductivity Function Using a Small Centrifuge

Download or read book Determination of the Soil Water Retention Curve and the Hydraulic Conductivity Function Using a Small Centrifuge written by Rodrigo Martins Reis and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 10 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An alternative methodology for direct determination of the soil-water retention curve (SWRC) and evaluation the hydraulic conductivity of the unsaturated soil was developed using a commercially available small centrifuge with a swinging type rotor assembly without in-flight instrumentation. The testing procedure consists of spinning up four initially saturated soil specimens until constant water content is achieved for a given angular speed. The soil − suction relationship is determined by relating the respective water content to the suction magnitude induced by the ceramic plate at the specimen's base. The hydraulic conductivity of the unsaturated soil is estimated by dividing the cumulative flow rate measured at each angular speed by the respective hydraulic gradient applied at specimen's middle height. This methodology was applied for evaluating the SWRC of a residual gneissic soil profile using both, undisturbed and remolded soil specimens. The results show good agreement to other well established methodologies such as filter-paper method, porous plate funnel and suction plate extractor. The determined unsaturated hydraulic conductivities magnitudes were compared to the theoretical predicted values given by the Mualem − van Genuchten model (van Genuchten, 1980) indicating good agreement. Overall, it can be concluded that the methodology proposed ensures good agreement in determining the SWRC and the hydraulic conductivity of studied soils.
