Book Science and Technology of Concrete Admixtures

Download or read book Science and Technology of Concrete Admixtures written by Pierre-Claude Aïtcin and published by Woodhead Publishing. This book was released on 2015-11-12 with total page 668 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Science and Technology of Concrete Admixtures presents admixtures from both a theoretical and practical point-of-view. The authors emphasize key concepts that can be used to better understand the working mechanisms of these products by presenting a concise overview on the fundamental behavior of Portland cement and hydraulic binders as well as their chemical admixtures, also discussing recent effects in concrete in terms of rheology, mechanics, durability, and sustainability, but never forgetting the fundamental role played by the water/binder ratio and proper curing in concrete technology. Part One presents basic knowledge on Portland cement and concrete, while Part Two deals with the chemical and physical background needed to better understand what admixtures are chemically, and through which mechanism they modify the properties of the fresh and hardened concrete. Subsequent sections present discussions on admixtures technology and two particular types of concrete, self-consolidating and ultra-high strength concretes, with final remarks on their future. Combines the knowledge of two leading authors to present both the scientific and technology of admixtures Explains what admixtures are from a chemical point-of-view and illustrates by which mechanisms they modify the properties of fresh and hardened concrete Presents a fundamental, practical, and innovative reference book on the topic Contains three detailed appendices that can be used to learn how to use admixtures more efficiently

Book Lea s Chemistry of Cement and Concrete

Download or read book Lea s Chemistry of Cement and Concrete written by Peter Hewlett and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2003-11-12 with total page 1087 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lea's Chemistry of Cement and Concrete deals with the chemical and physical properties of cements and concretes and their relation to the practical problems that arise in manufacture and use. As such it is addressed not only to the chemist and those concerned with the science and technology of silicate materials, but also to those interested in the use of concrete in building and civil engineering construction. Much attention is given to the suitability of materials, to the conditions under which concrete can excel and those where it may deteriorate and to the precautionary or remedial measures that can be adopted. First published in 1935, this is the fourth edition and the first to appear since the death of Sir Frederick Lea, the original author. Over the life of the first three editions, this book has become the authority on its subject. The fourth edition is edited by Professor Peter C. Hewlett, Director of the British Board of Agrement and visiting Industrial Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Dundee. Professor Hewlett has brought together a distinguished body of international contributors to produce an edition which is a worthy successor to the previous editions.

Book Study of hydration processes of Portland cements blended with supplementary cementitious materials

Download or read book Study of hydration processes of Portland cements blended with supplementary cementitious materials written by Axel Schöler and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2012-08-16 with total page 147 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2012 in the subject Chemistry - Materials Chemistry, grade: 1,3, TU Bergakademie Freiberg (Institut für Glas, Keramik und Baustofftechnik), course: Bauchemie, language: English, abstract: The production of Portland cement clinker has a share of about 6% to 8% on the global CO2-emissions . Approximately 60% of those emissions are attributable to the decarbonation of limestone. A widespread approach for the reduction of the CO2-emissions is to replace the clinker in the cement by pozzolanic waste materials, e.g. fly ash. The reaction of fly ash is generally slow. Due to this slow reaction cement pastes mixed of Portland cement and fly ash have a slower strength development than pure Portland cement, at least at early ages up to 7 days. The goal of this study was to increase early strength properties of Portland cement/fly ash blends by increasing the early ettringite formation in order to decrease the porosity. Therefore various amounts of anhydrite and laboratory synthesised C3A were added to Portland cement/fly ash systems that contained 30% fly ash. The behavior of these systems in terms of kinetics, phase development and microstructure was studied by means of strength tests, isothermal calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, chemical shrinkage, X-ray diffraction, backscattered electron image analysis, mercury intrusion porosimetry and thermodynamic modeling. In addition the activation by Na2SO4 was investigated on certain systems. It was found that the amount of ettringite formed increases gradually with increasing amounts of anhydrite and C3A. The formation of ettringite was completed at approximately 1 day. Further the activation with Na2SO4 increased the amount of ettringite and shifted the completion of its formation to approximately 2 days. Due to the addition of anhydrite and C3A the porosity decreased corresponding to the amount of ettringite formed. The effects on the development of early strength were most distinct for very high additions and for systems activated by Na2SO4. All systems showed equal strengths at 7 d and 28 d. For later ages up to 90 days, the benefits at early ages were found to be inversed, leading to lower strength values compared to systems without or with low additions of anhydrite, C3A or Na2SO4. Eventually the increase in early strength was either too low to be significant or only relevant at very high additions of anhydrite and C3A with simultaneous system activation by Na2SO4. In terms of kinetics a remarkable impact of the added C3A was observed as this seemed to significantly accelerate the silicate reaction of the Portland cement.
