Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hyderabad in 1890 and 1891: Comprising All the Letters on Hyderabad Affairs Written to the Madras "Hindu" By Its Hyderabad Correspondent During 1890 and 1891 The appearance of this book is due to the suggestion of some friends who were kind enough to think, and had influence enough to make me believe, that the letters I had written to the Madras Hindu my capacity of its Hyderabad Correspondent during 1890 and 1891 deserved to be rescued from the oblivion that is the fate of newspaper contributions generally. When this fact has been stated, there is little, I think, that remains to be added by way of bespeaking the indulgence of the reader for any blemishes in the manner in which facts are put forth, popular feeling is portrayed and honest comments are fearlessly made in the following pages. I have omitted a few paragraphs that could be of momentary interest and importance only, and corrected a few insignificant errors here and. there. In all other respects the letters appear in this volume exactly as they did in the columns of the Madras Hindu. Book The Mysterious Mr Jacob

Download or read book The Mysterious Mr Jacob written by John Zubrzycki and published by Transit Lounge . This book was released on 2017-04-01 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'One of the most exciting narrative histories to come out of India.' William Dalrymple It was a scandal that rocked the highest echelons of the British Raj. In 1891, a notorious jeweller and curio dealer from Simla offered to sell the world's largest brilliant-cut diamond to the fabulously wealthy Nizam of Hyderabad. If the audacious deal succeeded it would set the merchant up for life. But the transaction went horribly wrong. The Nizam accused him of fraud, triggering a sensational trial in the Calcutta High Court that made headlines around the world. The dealer was Alexander Malcolm Jacob, a man of mysterious origins. After arriving penniless in Bombay in 1865, he became the most famous purveyor of precious stones in princely India, and a confidante of Viceroys and Maharajas. Jacob also excelled in the magical arts. He inspired all those who met him, including Rudyard Kipling who immortalised him as Lurgan Sahib, the 'healer of sick pearls', in his novel Kim.Now for the first time, John Zubrzycki, author of The Last Nizam, conveys the page-turning colour, romance and adventure of Jacob's astonishing life. Starting on the banks of the Tigris in modern-day Turkey where Jacob was born, Zubrzycki strips away the myths and legends. He follows Jacob's journey from the slums of Bombay, to the fabulous court of the Nizam of Hyderabad, from the hedonistic heights of Simla, the summer capital of the Raj, to the Calcutta High Court. This is a story of India, of strange twists and unexpected outcomes. Most importantly Zubrzycki enters into and truly captures the spirit of the mysterious Mr Jacob, one of the most enigmatic and charismatic figures of his time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Fall of 1892, Alexander Russell Webb, the American consul to the Philippine Islands, resigned his post and set off for a tour of the Indian subcontinent. Webb had converted to Islam and partnered with Indian Muslims to commence an Islamic mission to the United States. Part of the agreement allowed Webb to travel to India on his way back to America and visit cities with large Muslim populations. This work encompasses his travels, including: his departure from Manila, sea voyages, stays in Singapore and Penang, and most notably, the more than two months that he spent amongst the Muslims of Rangoon, Calcutta, Bombay, Poona, Hyderabad, and Madras. During Webb's travels he met with many prominent members of the Indian Muslim community, and presented lectures on Islam to large audiences. As an American Muslim, and one of the first converts in North America to Islam, his first-person accounts provide a unique perspective and historical account of Colonial India and Indian Muslims in particular. A primary document that will prove invaluable in studying the early Muslim history of the United States and its relationship to India. Complete with historical Introduction, Notes, Bibliography, and detailed Index.

Book excerpt: Muhammad Quil Qutb Shah built the beautiful city of Hyderabad as a 'replica of heaven on earth'. It was plundered in 1687 by the Mughal forces led by Aurangzeb. After a long period of neglect it rose to be the capital of the expansive Deccan province. The city witnessed phenomenal expansion under Asaf Jah I, and also the dissipation of his legacy. The author acknowledges the most unique feature of this city--the continuance of its cosmopolitan character in the face of communal pressures. He attributes this amalgam of Hindu and Muslim cultures to the mixed 'parentage'--Hind and Muslim--of its rulers. This volume spans the history of the city from its birth up to the elections of 2004. This book combines the sweep of popular history of the city with the rigour of historiography to make it a fascinating reading of the cultural and political history of the city of Hyderabad.
