Download or read book Historic Cities of the Islamic World written by C. Edmund Bosworth and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2007-08-31 with total page 630 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains articles on historic cities of the Islamic world, ranging from West Africa to Malaysia, which over the centuries have been centres of culture and learning and of economic and commercial life, and which have contributed much to the consolidation of Islam as a faith and as a social and political institution. The articles have been taken from the second edition of the Encyclopaedia of Islam, completed in 2004, but in many cases expanded and rewritten. All have been updated to include fresh historical information, with note of contemporary social developments and population statistics. The book thus delineates the urban background of Islam has it has evolved up to the present day, highlighting the role of such great cities as Cairo, Istanbul, Baghdad and Delhi in Islamic history, and also brings them together in a rich panorama illustrating one of mankind's greatest achievements, the living organism of the city.

Book excerpt: History of IndiaIndia has enjoyed a long period of history. It is one of the lands of ancient civilizations. The history of the Indian subcontinent began with the birth of the Indus Valley Civilization and the coming of the Aryans. This period going back to almost 3300 BC, is usually referred to as the pre-Vedic or the Vedic period. It was during this time, that Hinduism, Jainism and Buddhism rose in the country. Then came the time of powerful ruling dynasties. Amongst the first rulers to hold dominion over most of the Indian subcontinent were the Mauryan Empire. During the 4th and 3rd Century BC, they had conquered and ruled over most of the Indian subcontinent. For the next 1500 years, a lot of different rulers ruled over different parts of the Indian subcontinent, and India flourished in all aspects, including trade, literature, culture, religion, administration, civilization, mathematics, astronomy, et cetera. The Islamic rule in the country started in the 13th Century, beginning in the northern parts of the country when the Delhi Sultanate was founded in 1206 CE. Although Islam had come to many parts of the subcontinent as early as 8th Century, it truly rose to power only after 13th Century CE. Over time, many other dynasties rose, conquered lands, built significant landmarks and fell again. Some of the notable ones included the Mughals, the Marathas, the Sikhs, et cetera. From the late 18th Century onwards, a large part of India was annexed by the British East India Company, amongst other colonial powers such as the Dutch, the French and the Portuguese. After the revolt of 1857 however, much of the control of the country fell directly under the hands of the British Crown. Then began a long struggle for Independence which was finally accomplished in the year 1947, after the country was partitioned into the dominions of India, Pakistan and several other princely states.About the seriesThroughout the History, different empires flourished and fell again. Right from the early Indus Valley civilization to the Colonial rule under the British Crown. But each civilization left its mark, in the form of beautifully constructed buildings and structures. These structures remind us of an era bygone, and take us back to the glorious and historic past of India. Some of them have stood the test of time, and have been brilliantly preserved. Others have deteriorated and lost their lustre, and lie in the form of ruins, giving just a hint of their glorious past. None the less, they form an important part of India's history and represent the historicity of this amazing ancient land in the form of 'Heritage of India'.This series aims to explore such structures (from different time periods) from around the country and bring it to you in the form of Discover India | Photojournals. It tells you all that you'd need to know about the heritage structure: before, during as well as after visiting the place. This is your perfect guide to know about the concerned structure, as well as enjoy a preview/souvenir with beautiful photographs of the heritage structures. So, enjoy the book and take it with you as you journey through India, exploring the vast array of heritage structures that India has to offer.Golconda Fort | HyderabadOne of the most famous heritage sites in Hyderabad, the Golconda Fort is a huge fort complex, featuring buildings built during the rule of the Qutb Shahi dynasty. The ruins of the fort complex are some of the oldest surviving structures from the Qutb Shahi period in Hyderabad. Even in its current state, the glory of the Pashtun, Persian and Hindu styles of architecture can still be felt on visiting the complex. In all respects, it surely is one of the must visit monuments in Hyderabad.

Download or read book Gateways Of Asia written by Frank Broeze and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-28 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First Published in 1997. The dynamic role of port cities has been a major element in the thrust of modern port city literature since. In the process interactions between history and other disciplines, above all geography, economics and town planning resulted in a growing number of collaborative volumes. Indicative of the broad front, multi-disciplinary approach and challenging agenda of this wave of port town and port city studies is the collective and diverse nature of the themes and authorship of each of these works. That very diversity of disciplines, nationalities and perspectives is also one of the main pillars supporting Gateways of Asia. It is not a repetition or summary of the introduction and first chapter of Brides of the Sea, but the publication of this volume, in many ways a sequel to that work, does provide the opportunity of clarifying a few points and elaborating on some issues raised after its publication.
Download or read book The Emperor Who Never Was written by Supriya Gandhi and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2020-01-07 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The definitive biography of the eldest son of Emperor Shah Jahan, whose death at the hands of his younger brother Aurangzeb changed the course of South Asian history. Dara Shukoh was the eldest son of Shah Jahan, the fifth Mughal emperor, best known for commissioning the Taj Mahal as a mausoleum for his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal. Although the Mughals did not practice primogeniture, Dara, a Sufi who studied Hindu thought, was the presumed heir to the throne and prepared himself to be India’s next ruler. In this exquisite narrative biography, the most comprehensive ever written, Supriya Gandhi draws on archival sources to tell the story of the four brothers—Dara, Shuja, Murad, and Aurangzeb—who with their older sister Jahanara Begum clashed during a war of succession. Emerging victorious, Aurangzeb executed his brothers, jailed his father, and became the sixth and last great Mughal. After Aurangzeb’s reign, the Mughal Empire began to disintegrate. Endless battles with rival rulers depleted the royal coffers, until by the end of the seventeenth century Europeans would start gaining a foothold along the edges of the subcontinent. Historians have long wondered whether the Mughal Empire would have crumbled when it did, allowing European traders to seize control of India, if Dara Shukoh had ascended the throne. To many in South Asia, Aurangzeb is the scholastic bigot who imposed a strict form of Islam and alienated his non-Muslim subjects. Dara, by contrast, is mythologized as a poet and mystic. Gandhi’s nuanced biography gives us a more complex and revealing portrait of this Mughal prince than we have ever had.
