Book The Magnificent Diwan

Download or read book The Magnificent Diwan written by Bakhtiar K Dadabhoy and published by Penguin Random House India Private Limited. This book was released on 2019-12-13 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Magnificent Diwan: The Life and Times of Sir Salar Jung I is the definitive biography of arguably India's most influential and powerful statesman of the nineteenth century. Drawing on extensive archival material, this is a compelling account of the life and times of a remarkable Indian who as Diwan or prime minister decisively shaped Hyderabad's political and economic history for nearly three decades in the second half of the nineteenth century. It was Salar Jung who, by his reforms of the medieval oligarchy that was Hyderabad, ushered the state into the modern era. This book is not merely a chronicle of his life but also a history of Hyderabad - both social and governmental - and gives the reader an encompassing view of the man who has been called the founder of modern Hyderabad. Meticulously researched and engagingly written, this biography introduces Sir Salar Jung I to a new generation, even as it rekindles the memory of a man who has become the victim of collective amnesia.

Book Sikhs in the Deccan and North East India

Download or read book Sikhs in the Deccan and North East India written by Birinder Pal Singh and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2018-01-12 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a major intervention in the understanding of the dynamics of internal migration in South Asia. It traces the historical roots of certain migrant Sikh communities to the south and north-east India; chronicles their social, religious and economic practices; and examines peculiar identity formations. This first-of-its-kind empirical study examines the socio-economic conditions of Sikhs in the Deccan and the North-East who are believed to be the descendants of the soldiers in Maharaja Ranjit Singh’s army despatched to the two regions in the early nineteenth century. It draws on extensive ethnographic accounts to present the social realities of the different communities, including language, religion, culture, occupation, caste, marriage and kinship, and agency. It also questions the idea of Sikh homogeneity that many within the community have come to believe in, while revealing both differences and similarities. The book will be of great interest to scholars and researchers of sociology and social anthropology, migration and diaspora studies, religion, especially Sikh studies, cultural studies, as well as the Sikh diaspora worldwide.

Book Colonial Encounter

Download or read book Colonial Encounter written by C. Vijayasree and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2018-05-20 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on transactions between English and Telugu through a study of translations and related works published from about the early-nineteenth century to mid-twentieth century. Moving beyond Edward Said’s theoretical paradigms which suggest that these interfaces were driven by imperial and colonial interests, the essays in this volume look at how they also triggered developments within the indigenous literary and cultural practices and evolved new forms of expression. The book will be of great interest to scholars and researchers of linguistics, translation studies, comparative literature, cultural studies and modern South Asian history.
