Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: David Cecelski chronicles one of the most sustained and successful protests of the civil rights movement--the 1968-69 school boycott in Hyde County, North Carolina. For an entire year, the county's black citizens refused to send their children to school in protest of a desegregation plan that required closing two historically black schools in their remote coastal community. Parents and students held nonviolent protests daily for five months, marched twice on the state capitol in Raleigh, and drove the Ku Klux Klan out of the county in a massive gunfight. The threatened closing of Hyde County's black schools collided with a rich and vibrant educational heritage that had helped to sustain the black community since Reconstruction. As other southern school boards routinely closed black schools and displaced their educational leaders, Hyde County blacks began to fear that school desegregation was undermining--rather than enhancing--this legacy. This book, then, is the story of one county's extraordinary struggle for civil rights, but at the same time it explores the fight for civil rights in all of eastern North Carolina and the dismantling of black education throughout the South.

Book Lake Mattamuskeet New Holland and Hyde County

Download or read book Lake Mattamuskeet New Holland and Hyde County written by Lewis C. Forrest and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 1999 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Located in the mainland of Eastern North Carolina, Hyde County is a fascinating blend of beautiful wetlands--with an incredible assortment of wildlife--and rich, sweeping farmlands, which have played the principal role in yielding the economic prosperity for the county. Lake Mattamuskeet, the center and heart of Hyde County, has enjoyed a long and interesting history, one that has included early American Indian tribes, national business interests, New Deal government projects, and many generations of hunters and fishermen. Through an impressive collection of photographs, this volume will take you on a visual tour through the history of Lake Mattamuskeet, New Holland, and Hyde County over the past 100 years. Because the farmland around the lake was so rich, early businessmen, even back into the colonial days, had the ambition of draining the lake to provide more rich-soil acreage and thus, create a profitable real estate venture. In this book, you will see first-hand all the intensive labor, both mental and physical, that went into the lake: from the first plans for drainage, the huge floating dipper dredges excavating the canals, the creation of the world's largest pumping plant (now Mattamuskeet Lodge), a company's city planning of New Holland, the introduction of the railroad, the work of the Civilian Conservation Corps in making the lake a waterfowl refuge, and throughout, the farming that has sustained Hyde County over the years.

Book The Church of England in North Carolina

Download or read book The Church of England in North Carolina written by Robert J. Cain and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-08-09 with total page 712 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Church of England in North Carolina: Documents, 1699-1741 One innovation in the present volume is that, unlike the first nine in this series, it includes extracts as well as entire documents. Previous volumes have with almost no exceptions printed documents in full; such a procedure for Volume X would have led to the inclusion of much material that is of marginal or no value to the story of the Church of England in colonial North Carolina. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: About the Author . . . Henry Vanderbilt Johnson, Jr. I grew up on the Outer Banks, North Carolina (Manteo) and Hyde County. He is the middle child with four other siblings. His father served the in the United States army for twenty-one years. While his father was away, Johnson was compelled to play the role of "great protector" of the household. He utterly hated elementary school due ongoing encounters with bullies and indifferent teachers. He described classroom settings as incarcerated learning environments. Johnson viewed teachers as security guards and principals as wardens. Johnson describes his elementary and middle school experiences as tortuous and dehumanizing. He began school at the older age of seven instead of six. He spent two years in the first grade and tolerated ridicule and bullying each day from students who didn't like him. After being retained in the first grade, Johnson experienced another setback during his sophomore year of high school when the black community of his school district elected to stage a boycott in protest of a plan to close all black schools within the county. As such, he was nearly twenty-one years old before graduating high school. Due to the fact that his father was in the military, Johnson traveled extensively. He lived in France, Germany, Fairfax, Virginia, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and a host of other small towns and cities. He describes Kronicles of a Kolored Kid as a paper trail of his experiences growing up as a poor black male in eastern North Carolina. He shares a host of stories about the internal dynamics of the black community, social class systems, rites of passage, encounters with the Ku Klux Klan, friendships, betrayals, and death. He contends that his chronicle will compel you to laugh out loud and shed tears of sorrow. Johnson received a Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction from Virginia Tech, a (CAGS) Certificate of Advanced Graduate Studies from Virginia Tech, an Education Specialist Degree from East Carolina University, a Master's Degree in Educational Leadership from North Carolina A & T State University, a Master's Degree in Middle School Education and Reading from North Carolina A & T State University, and Bachelor of Science Degree in Intermediate Education from Elizabeth City State University. He is currently employed as an Associate Professor and Coordinator of Middle Grades and Secondary Education at Elizabeth City State University, Elizabeth City, North Carolina.
