Book Biochemistry of Antimicrobial Action

Download or read book Biochemistry of Antimicrobial Action written by Trevor John Franklin and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rapid advances made in the study of the synthesis, structure and function of biological macromolecules in the last fifteen years have enabled scientists concerned with antimicrobial agents to achieve a considerable measure of understanding of how these substances inhibit cell growth and division. The use of antimicrobial agents as highly specific inhibitors has in turn substantially assisted the investigation of complex biochemical processes. The literature in this field is so extensive however, that we considered an attempt should be made to draw together in an introductory book the more significant studies of recent years. This book, which is in fact based on lecture courses given by us to undergraduates at Liverpool and Manchester Universities, is therefore intended as an introduction to the biochemistry of antimicrobial action for advanced students in many disciplines. We hope that it may also be useful to established scientists who are new to this area of research. The book is concerned with a discussion of medically important antimicrobial compounds and also a number of agents that, although having no medical uses, have proved invaluable as research tools in biochemistry. Our aim has been to present the available information in a simple and readable way, emphasizing the established facts rather than more controversial material. Whenever possible, however, we have indicated the gaps in the present knowledge of the subject where further information is required.

Book Happy Natives

    Book Details:
  • Author : Greig Coetzee
  • Publisher : University of Kwazulu Natal Press
  • Release : 2002
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 76 pages

Download or read book Happy Natives written by Greig Coetzee and published by University of Kwazulu Natal Press. This book was released on 2002 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Greig Coetzee's latest play Happy Natives is a triumphant confirmation of this writer's ability to comment satirically and powerfully on South African society. The play is extremely gripping, very funny and yet keeps surprising the audience with its insight into the complexities of cross-cultural relationships, ten years on from the start of the rainbow nation. The play shows how little we still know each other and how South Africans still make assumptions about each other based on racial grouping rather than on individual reality. This is rich material for comedy, and Coetzee excels in using such theatrical techniques as the reversal of expectation and the revelation of the unexpected and the contradictory. Happy Natives is very contemporary, looking at the way in which South Africans struggle to define their present identity. Coetzee's play points out just what an interesting and richly human world we inhabit. He shows that no human being in fact fits into the images that the media would like to sell us, and that the effort required to relate authentically to one another is worthwhile. A willingness to listen, a tolerance of different ways, and a sense of one's own worth are shown to be ways in which one can enjoy diversity.

Book Rethinking the Irish Diaspora

Download or read book Rethinking the Irish Diaspora written by Johanne Devlin Trew and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-03-13 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides scholarly perspectives on a range of timely concerns in Irish diaspora studies. It offers a focal point for fresh interchanges and theoretical insights on questions of identity, Irishness, historiography and the academy’s role in all of these. In doing so, it chimes with the significant public debates on Irish and Irish emigrant identities that have emerged from Ireland’s The Gathering initiative (2013) and that continue to reverberate throughout the Decade of Centenaries (2012-2023) in Ireland, North and South. In ten chapters of new research on key areas of concern in this field, the book sustains a conversation centred on three core questions: what is diaspora in the Irish context and who does it include/exclude? What is the view of Ireland and Northern Ireland from the diaspora? How can new perspectives in the academy engage with a more rigorous and probing theorisation of these concerns? This thought-provoking work will appeal to students and scholars of history, geography, literature, sociology, tourism studies and Irish studies.
